I had a lovely offer to participate in this blog tour and I loved the blurbs for the books, so I had to say yes Also, I am doing something a little different but fun…. I am going to have a little contest to win some goodies from the author!! I’ll get to that in a bit. I am starting this part one blog tour off with a little spotlight of the books in the series and an author interview, and then I am gunna show you some more, like reviews and winners, next week! So, let’s just jump right on in! 

 Book 1 Synopsis:  18 year old Sophie Jean is pretty good at acting normal. Sure, she’s not exactly happy, but happiness is nothing compared to being like everyone else. She can pretend she’s not allergic to the sun. She can hide what her ex-boyfriend did to her. She can cover up the scars she’s made for herself. Ignore anything. Forget anything. Then Myles enters her life, and he has more than a few secrets of his own. When accident after accident keeps happening to Sophie, she can’t help noticing that he’s everywhere. That he knows too much. That she’s remembering too much.

It’s one thing covering up her own dark past, but does she really need to worry about people finding out just how much Myles likes her? Or that despite how much she doesn’t want to repeat past mistakes, she kind of likes him back? Not to mention the fact that she now has to conceal that Myles drinks blood-that he says he’s about four hundred years old.

She almost forgot about that part.

But Sophie has no plans to ruin the normal life she has created for herself. She can deal with this little glitch, no problem. Even if word has gotten around to the wrong vampire about Sophie and Myles, even if she’s putting the few people she loves at risk. Suddenly, those who were monsters before are just people, and the monsters? They’re real. Now being a normal human being is the least of her problems. Now she has to stay alive.

WELCOME!! First, tell me a little about your book and why you wanted to write this particular story….

Sunshine is about a girl named Sophie who is allergic to the sun. It’s also about finding yourself after people have continuously shown you that you can’t trust them. Sunshine is a story that is essentially about a girl who has had a lot of crap happen to her and her journey into accepting it and moving past it.

I wanted to write this story because it was interesting to me. How much could one person go through without breaking completely? How many times can someone be betrayed and still have the capacity to learn to love again? There are so many more reasons, but those were two big ones.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated or did you always just know?

I realized that I liked telling stories at a very young age. I recall telling my classmates that I had a pet dragon when I was five. I remember making up elaborate stories as to why my parents weren’t at a girl scout meeting with the other parents…things like that.

Then I began to use writing as a way to cope with things. If I was upset or anxious, I’d either write about it or write about something so completely opposite that I didn’t have to focus on what I was feeling. That’s when the love truly started to develop.

What inspired you to write your first book and what was it?

I went on a trip to Aruba with my mom and sisters when I was in high school, got sun poisoning the first day, and stayed inside the rest of the vacation. That was when I wrote most of the ideas down. Granted, they were somewhat illegible due to the pain I was in at the time of writing them, but it was still there.

Jeez, that’s terrible, but awesome in one Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

Yes and no. Some of the experiences I know about first hand while others are a combination of research and creativity.

How do you choose when/which characters die in your books?

Well, that’s a hard one. When I plan out a book or story, I always just kind of know who is going to be there at the end and who isn’t.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

I’m not sure if she’s all that new, but I’ve been telling everyone to read Michelle Hodkin. I also love H.D. Gordon and Janelle Stalder, though I may be a bit biased because they are also amazing people. : )

I happen to love BOTH HD and Ms J- who is the most awesomest author because she’s giving me my book boyfriend Who do you look up to as a writer?

Okay, this may be a little mushy, but I look up to my little sister, Kelly. She’s an artist and a writer and she has this keen ability to grasp onto the situations, experiences, and life around her and turn it into something beautiful and amazing. I admire that about her more than she knows.

Not mushy-VERY cool!! If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your book?

Not really. I worked on Sunshine—not only the first book, but the plot for the entire series—for over five years. I’m pretty happy with it and where it’s going.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

We could be here for days. Of course. I think the most frustrating thing to any writer/creative person is self-doubt, which is something I experience as I edit things into and out of my stories. Something I loved while writing I’ll end up loathing while editing. Sometimes I wonder if I’m a “real writer” or what exactly it is I think I’m doing, but then I see people liking what I do and that all goes away and I eventually forget that I doubted myself…until I edit the next story, that is.

What book are you reading now? Or what genre? My followers love author’s opinions!

I just started American Psycho. I’ve been reading so many different genres lately: horror, dystopian, paranormal, and even a few biographies. 

Who designed the cover? And do you help with them?

My lovely cover came from Regina Wamba of MaeIDesign. She is a fantastic artist and person. I sent her a few sample chapters, a list of things that are important to the story, and the synopsis of my book, but other than that, I let her do her thing. I trust her 100% when it comes to the covers. : )

She IS quite amazingly talented! Did you learn anything from writing your books and what was it?

I learn something new every time I write. That’s one of the reasons I love it so much. I learn and gain so much each time. I can’t pin point too many things in particular, but I’ve learned recently that my characters, especially the ones in Sunshine, tend to take on a life of their own when I’m writing. If I let them do what they want/need to do, my job is so much easier.

If you could be one of your characters, who would you chose?

Someone was asking me this just the other day. I feel like all of my characters have such horrible things happen to them that they have to work through. I wouldn’t want to be any of them. I like watching them grow or stay the same, but writing “for” them, so to speak, is the closest I’d probably want to be as far as being one of my own characters goes.

Are there any books you think some of us should read, just because?

There are so many! I’d say anything by Neil Gaiman or Augusten Burroughs, because they’re two of my favorites. But I also think The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka is an amazing short story that I continuously find new things in. I’ve been re-reading that, along with his diaries lately as inspiration for a future project, and it’s helped me so much.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

First of all, thank you! I really mean it when I say that I love anyone who has read something I basically made up and liked it. How crazy is that? Also, I’m super nice, so we should all be friends. : )

My Review:

This is such an interesting concept of paranormal mixing. You have some old school mythology supernaturals with a more modern supernatural character thrown together to make things extremely intriguing. This is the story of a girl, who is normal, but rushes to the aid of her missing friend, and in her rescue mission, she finds out so much more is in the world than most know about. She has a sketchy past, or should I say her family did, which has bled into her future. The shadow people are more than willing to overlook that past, in fact their leader wants her so bad, they don’t even care who they hurt in the process to get to her. 

Ava is a young woman, who’s father was connected to the cartel- or so people say- so she happens to have body guards. Yet, she is always giving them the slip. She gets a phone call telling her that her best friend Dyson has gone missing in New Orleans, and she drops everything to find him. The police won’t tell her anything, his own family is being creepy and rude, and there’s this scary presence that seems to follow her. She is so dedicated in finding out where that she is literally thrown into a world of supernatural beings that only few can see. She is trying to figure out who to trust, and how on earth is she going to find Dyson. I liked Ava. I think she may have some more adventures coming up  

There’s a bucket full of side characters, and they part I like the most is the mystery they add to the story. You don’t know who is a good guy, bad guy, shadow guy/girl, or just nutcase I have my few favorites, but I don’t want to tell you who they are because then I’d have to tell you why I like them, which would be spoilery.

Also, I loved the mystery. There are clues, and when you figure it out, you will face palm yourself for not figuring it out sooner. Such an interesting play on the supernatural world. Plus, I did NOT see that ending coming. It ended nicely. It makes for a nice debut of this series. BUT, I have one complaint…. I’m A LOCAL… so, like, where’s the weather? Dude, it’s freaking oppressingly hot and humid here, plus, we have crazy winters, and it’s like a whole different country with the weather. I didn’t get a feel for that part NOR the ridiculously good food. Um, I’m chubby for a reason- we have the most amazing food! BUT I did feel that the landscape was good. The general direction and local outings felt ok. So, I look forward to more.  4 MYSTERIOUSLY SHADOWED PAWS!!

WELCOME!! First, tell me a little about your book ….

Murder on Mars is a mystery suspense, it begins with sixteen year old Ava Lopez arriving in New Orleans after learning that a good friend of hers has disappeared. She begins to track him down by piecing together what he had been doing the last few days before he disappeared; she discovers a hidden world within the city. 

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated or did you always just know?

Writing is something that I’ve always enjoyed. One of my aunts writes so my cousins and I grew up on her stories. It led to my love of reading and because of that I developed a few stories of my own that I wanted to share. 

Who do you look up to as a writer?

I love Agatha Christie; the characters of Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple are among some of my favorites. She is a master at crafting fine mysteries and stumping the brightest of minds. 

What book are you reading now? Or what genre?

I am currently reading Airion: Return to Zire by J.S. Council. This is an absolutely fantastic coming of age story.

Who designed the cover? And do you help with them?

Did you learn anything from writing your books and what was it?

Every time I begin to work on a new story I first decide on the location, I read up on the local legends and myths because I want to build a connection between myself and the city that will be hosting the characters for my story. And though I may not incorporate what I’ve discovered in my research I am enlightened by the wonderful people and their history and I feel this has helped me grow as a writer. 

Are there any books you think some of us should read, just because?

Yes I do! Rise of the Empire book two of the Riyria Revelations by Michael J. Sullivan. This is a great series which I recommend. 

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Yes, for this story I found my inspiration from the city of New Orleans. I visited New Orleans one summer in August and found it to be a charming place. During the short time I was there I heard some of the most amazing music. I knew that when I began working on Murder on Mars I had to feature this and I worked on capturing the mood and feel of what I was lucky enough to hear while I was in town.

 I wrote three characters into my story with the purpose of using them to convey what I had learned. Each of them had different backgrounds and stories of their own who came together to form their band. While I was in New Orleans I learned music was something to be learned and to be shared, music was life.

Today I have a fantastic book to tell you about My lovely friends at Moon Rose Publishing have some fantastic things to read lately, so I had to show you Now let’s get to it!

My Review:

Well, let me just say that this is a fantastic book, but it’s not for the faint of heart nor the weak stomached. It’s a thrilling, scary ride through the life of Megan, but it’s complicated, and dark, and hauntingly amazing. I have never been more shocked by a story’s plots, and bad guys, and twists, and secrets. Trust me, it’s full of things that are awe-inspiring. Plus, let’s just say that the characters will all surprise you.  

Megan is a complex character. She’s a scared timid girl when you first meet her- for good reasons. She has been on the run constantly from her father, and boy would I run too. Actually I think I would find every way possible to kill him, but it’s a little more complicated than that. But anywho. So, as she moves to a place she feels safer, she begins to find her self and friends, and for the first time, it really feels like she has a family. Until… well, let’s just say when you constantly have to look over your shoulder, and watch your back, there’s really no way to not make a mistake. And when her new best friend seems to be in trouble, she gets herself in more trouble that she helps. Megan’s adventure, if you can call it that, is a going to wow you. 

There’s so many side characters to talk about. Megan’s twin brother, her mother, her step father, her new best friend and his crazy sister, the crazy stalkers that come around every corner, her new step cousins, I could go one. There’s so many secrets going on between the different characters. And the plot was so well planned. I did not expect things when they happened. This type of crazy hasn’t been done before It’s one of those stories that I have to say, it was amazing, but sometimes hard. Some of those things may be hard, but they made the story. I definitely cannot wait for more of this story to go on. I seriously need a few to get what’s coming to them, both good and bad. 5 JAW DROPPING, HEART WRENCHING ACTION PACKED PAWS!

WELCOME!! First, tell me a little about your book and why you wanted to write this particular story….

The story follows Megan and her newly extended family on their journey for survival against the beast that has been stalking Megan all her life. I wanted to write this story because there is a lot of action involved and it can also become quite emotional at times. Since I have made it into a series you also get to know some of the characters in depth and see how they become affected by the events surrounding them.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated or did you always just know?

I remember writing lots of stories in my younger years, however I have no idea what happened to them. It would be interesting to see how my writing now, compares to what it used to be.

What inspired you to write your first book and what was it?

The idea for my book came to me out of the blue. It was originally planned to be in the horror genre but upon seeing a tattoo I liked, it sparked an idea for some of my characters and I decided to turn my story into a paranormal thriller instead.

I love that you did that! Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

No, none of the story is based on any experiences or real events it is purely fiction.

Whew! How do you chose when/which characters die in your books?

I wrote down each characters role and purpose in the story before I began writing it, although some of them have altered along the way.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

There are so many new authors I have come across lately which have interested me but one stands out. Never having read an autobiography before I came across Nathan Daniels an indie author and his book was totally amazing, he definitely grasped my interest.

Who do you look up to as a writer?

I have two favorite authors. Richard Laymon and Sherrilyn Kenyon so I guess you could say I look up to them. Both write in different genres and I can honestly say I have never grown bored of any of their books, neither have I not wanted to finish one.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your book?

Now that is a funny question. I have changed my book so many times, it barely resembles my original draft but I’m very happy with the finished result.

I am too Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

I find the dialogue challenging at times. I get a clear idea in my head of what I want the characters to say but getting them to express how I want it can be challenging sometimes.

What book are you reading now? Or what genre? My followers love author’s opinions!

At the moment I am reading Lover at Last by J.R. Ward, I love the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. I usually read in the paranormal genre but am quite partial to the horror genre.

Who designed the cover? And do you help with them?

My publisher Miranda Stork designed my cover and she does do amazing covers. I’m useless at that sort of thing so I wouldn’t be any help at all.

She’s quite an amazing cover designer and author! Did you learn anything from writing your books and what was it?

I think the main thing I have learned is to have more confidence in myself and my abilities. So many times over the years I had thought about writing a book but never followed through until now.

If you could be one of your characters, who would you chose?

I think I would choose Sabrina, she is a no- nonsense kick ass kinda gal. She doesn’t come into the story until the end but like I said you will find out more about her as the story continues.

I liked her too Are there any books you think some of us should read, just because?

Tough question. There are so many out there, I already mentioned The Black Dagger Brotherhood series. My absolute favorites are The Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon, Guardians of Eternity by Alexandra Ivy and The Breed series by Lara Adrian. You wouldn’t have enough room on your blog for my recommendations.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

All I can really say is that I hope they enjoy Twisted Bloodlines as much as I do I’m always available to talk to. In fact I would love to hear from my readers and their opinions either good or bad.

I definitely hope we do this again for your next book! I’m a new huge fan!!

More About The Author

I was born and raised in London, which is where I still live now with my husband and children. As a child I always had my nose stuck in a book. I started out reading mysteries such as Nancy Drew and then soon moving onto Agatha Christie. I then found a love of the horror genre, Richard Laymon being my favourite author among a few others. When a friend introduced me to the paranormal romance/fantasy genre I soon became hooked, building myself a very impressive to read pile and a long list of favourite authors. I would say both of these genres have influenced in the way I write and combining them is where I came up with the idea for my book.

My Review:

I originally found this one on netgalley and got the ok to read it so I was pumped. And then the lovely ladies from Bewitching Book Tours had a blitz going on, therefore I absolutely had to jump in to give you goodies! It sounded fun and though I’m usually against the vampers, I wanted to read this one.

This one is just cute and funny and so creative. I giggled. And though I don’t like or eat lasagna, I don’t think I’ll ever look at it the same when every one else around me eats it the characters will have you laughing and falling in love with them. Plus, there’s no more comparing vampers to Twilight. The author did a lovely job making her own world of fun.

My romance lovers will definitely connect with this one. I found that the sweet part of this book. It’s not so overly done that you think, UGH, but it was done just right to make you say, AWWW. I mean all Alice needs is a date because her sister is getting married, and her sister’s fiance is the brother of Alice’s ex-fiancé. Plus her ex will be bringing her former best friend to the wedding. Damn cheaters LOL!! It will make you smile and cheer a little when you see how well Alice’s date plan works, or maybe backfires a little

It’s a perfect read especially now, for the summer as it’s not very long, actually I wanted a little more. You’ll go through it quick, and it’s not so complicated that you feel winded when you finish. I really liked that about this book. It was easy to read.

I am now a fan and I really hope to see more, not only of Alice and the HAWT piece Noah, but of some of the other characters in future books! For once, I’m going to say High Five to the Vampers!! 4.5 SUGARY SWEET BLOOD SUCKING PAWS!!

Synopsis

Excerpt

Pen and I are lounging under a big white umbrella. I am curled up with my head on his chest. His heartbeat is steady and slow, his breathing shallow. He is asleep. I pinch his arm playfully. “You’re going to miss it.”

He takes a deep breath and chuckles. “I’m awake. And I’ve seen my share of sunsets.”

I turn my head and rest my chin on his chest. His eyes are still closed. “You’re a grouch, you know that?”

He opens one eye and stares at me. “You know I’m going to find you. You don’t need to do this.”

My throat burns with emotion. “Yes, I do. You might not make it in time.”

Both his eyes open and stare blankly up at the umbrella. He is angry. His jaw clenches and his nostrils flare.

“It’s almost time.” I crawl up and lie down, straddling him. My blonde hair makes a curtain around us. He looks sad as he reaches up and holds my face.

“I don’t know how to say goodbye to you.”

I smile. The sun is glowing in the horizon. Its resting place comes alive with color. I see it all happen in the reflection in his eyes.

“Yes, you do.” I press my lips against his, urgently stealing every taste of him. I pull his lip through my teeth, and he groans loudly. The sound is erotic. Suddenly his hand is on the back of my head, pulling me roughly against him. His lips are not gentle anymore. They are rough and scaly, like a snake. He is hurting me. I push hard against his chest, only to realize my hands are bound. I start to cry as the sun descends into its salty grave.

My Review:

So, I love red heads LOL I am usually not a big angel fan, but this is a fallen angel, a guardian to be exact, and it’s got a very twisted take on angels. What if the only way to save your Charge (the person you are guarding) is to kill their enemy. Would you do it at the consequence of giving up everything including your wings? Hmmm, so, the first couple of sentences had me hooked. It tells you exactly how Pen lost his wings, and how he’s living life now, as a human. Until he gets the chance to redeem his wings. Oh man, this was a good one. 

I really like Pen. He’s jaded, as he used to be an angel, and now is a human. However, when he finally realizes that in order to protect himself and his best friend, he must return to guarding the one person who lost him his wings. He’s sweet, and he tries to make things right, but it’s pretty hard. He’s also got a serious problem with Jade. 

Jade is a brat. *sigh* At first, I felt horrible when I learned how Jade and Pen relate to each other, and felt horrible. Then I met her, and lawd, she needs a really good whooping hahahaha. Yeah I wanted to say bad words there.  But then she grew, excellently, and I now can say I love her as a character. She is probably the best written character here, because she has the most growth in the book. You literally see it jumping off the page. 

Jade and Pen’s relationship is complicated. I can’t get into it too much because that would just spoil everything for you. I was not disappointed. And this book is told in three different parts. The first part, you meet Pen, then the second, you get to know Jade. Lastly, the POV shifts between the two. This made the book the most interesting. You learn the “beginning” from Pen, as why he did what he did, what he’s gone through as a consequence, and how he’s brought back to Jade. The middle is Jade’s POV where you see her change so much. I swear I thought I was going to hate her, but then she changed my mind.  

The writing is done so well, that you forget that you are reading different character POVs, and that it’s supposed to be simple. It’s grabs you, as these characters are just trying to survive. There’s some good mystery too, because not only is Pen’s “wings” on the line, but so is Jade’s life, and Pen’s BFF’s soul is there for the taking now too. I think if you like angels, you’ll love this one, but you’ll like it even if you don’t. It’s interesting, it’s fast paced, and it’s a good story. 4.5 FLIGHTLESS YET SOARING PAWS!!!

“Athine, hold the sword in one hand and cast a spell with the other!”  My mother, Raelin, was always barking orders.  It was always practice and then practice some more.  Didn’t she know how bored I was?  I had been practicing for eons to protect a land that was at peace.  I could cast magic with my eyes closed and my fighting skills were second nature to me.  Why did I need to practice so much if my skills were already honed?  

“Mother, this is useless.  No one has attacked Olympus, Draosia, or Ximira for several centuries.  Why must I keep practicing to be a protector of the lands with these poorly made weapons?  They break when I use them.  How can I possibly fight with this stick?” 

“Athine, you are a goddess of war born from three different bloodlines.  You must to live up to your legacy.  That is why you have to keep practicing.  I do not know why the weapons keep breaking.  Maybe if you focused more on using your Sh’cersay and less on your poor attitude the weapons would perform better.”

Ah yes, my ever present poor attitude.  Perhaps it was borne out of sheer boredom.  I had no desire to be a warrior protector.  That was supposed to be my mother’s job.  Yet, she kept trying to make it mine. Something about a vision or prophecy; I never really paid attention.

“Athine, stop day dreaming.  Andraste and Sabrina will be here tomorrow for your A’samrad.  Do you want to embarrass your grandmother by not completing the rite of passage?   As a potential ruler of Ximira and maybe even Olympus you are expected to do well.  Anything less would be an embarrassment to the bloodlines; all three of them.”

“Embarrassment?  Potential ruler?  Has anyone asked me if I cared lately?  I practice day in and day out just for the possibility that I may be ruler of a humdrum, peaceful country.  Maybe if I did fail the A’samrad you all would let me be.  I have no desire to be a ruler.   I do not care that my entire family is of noble immortals that love to rule.  I want to see other worlds.  I want to live a life of adventure.”  

How much clearer could I get?  I had no desire to rule any of these lands, yet they all hoped I would rule one day.  Any of my other siblings, cousins, aunts, or uncles would love to play this role.  I was meant for so much more, but alas no, becoming a “ruler” keeps being dumped on my lap.  I secretly wished I could fail the A’samrad and become an embarrassment.  That way I could go off on an adventure and discover what lay beyond the walls of our palace.  I knew there were harsher worlds out there ready for me to conquer.  I just had to get out of this world to find them.

My Review:

What an interesting take on mytholgy. And holy goodness is it complicated. HA! Everything you thought you knew, just throw it out the window for a little while. Things are wacky cool. I actually learned a few things about some of the myths, and maybe it’s not your normal telling, but I sure enjoyed it. 

Athine is a deterimined rule breaker. She is supposed to be a warrior, except she doesn’t want that. She also doesn’t want power, or to rule, yet she seems to be destined to do just that. Her family is either dead set on making her do these things, or wants to take the power. LOL Yeah, life is a little complicated. 

The writing was flawless. I also realized that this is not the beginning of the series. So, I got book one, to see how it all started. But I had already become immersed in this one to stop. It’s really interesting. And I know my review seems short, but I am trying really hard to find ways to talk about it without literally telling you major spoilers. This is harder than usual So, I will now say, you should just check it out. It’s an excellent story. It’s so unique you’ll have a blast figuring out how all the mythology comes into play, and it’ll make you think about all the old originals, and which one may be right. Hehehe a little conspiracy is always fun! So, get it. 4.5 FANTASY AND MYTHOLOGY-RIDDLED PAWS!

First, tell me a little about your book….

Take what you know about mythology and throw it out the window….

Verses of Athine follows my character, Athine, through her life and the trials she faces in finding her destiny.  It is full of mythological characters that you *think*  you know, but may surprise you.   

What inspired you to write your first book and what was it? 

The Secret of Genetic Corp X was my first book.  I had always wanted to write a book and finally it just happened.  It took several years of scribbling in a notebook and writing/re-writing, but the final edits were put in the book for paper in 2013.    I originally just started with one question…what if you had no sense of self?  That is what sparked the premise of the book. 

How do you chose when/which characters die in your books?

I have only killed off one major character per say and it was just the right thing to do.  It fit with the new mythology I was weaving.  I try not to kill off anyone that is a huge character, but sometimes characters are written just to die in my world.  And sometimes they die only to come back again….     

Who do you look up to as a writer? 

I admire Quinn Loftis and what she has created.  She’s really nice to talk to and although I’ve only spoken to her on Facebook she never fails to answer…which is kind of surreal to me b/c I see her books all over the place these days!

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your book?

Not at this point and time.  Why?  Because I just changed everything!  Verses of Athine is the book I wanted and the cover I wanted.  I started writing The Daughter of Ares Chronicles back in 2009 and at that time it was only going to be one installment.  So, it is kind of neat to see that only 4 years later I have the polished book I wanted with a complete story arc.  Is it perfect in every way?  No, but nobody is and no book is perfect no matter who publishes it.  As I say— we as writers are human and prone to mistakes even if the characters we create are not human

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Finding time to do it between a full time job and my fantasy art creation! 

Who designed the cover? And do you help with them?

Well yes, I helped them….I did it myself J  I got into 3D art and Poser specifically for my book covers.  That took off in a completely new direction as not only do I create my covers and fantasy art that I sell, but I’ve also created illustrations for other’s books.   It isn’t for everyone, but I think it is pretty neat.   

If you could be one of your characters, who would you chose?

I would want to be Athine.  She has it going on, cool weapons, and a world at her control.  She’s also smart, strong, and strong willed. 

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

I would like to thank everyone that takes the time to read the whole book.  Even those that don’t enjoy it.  The whole reason artists of any kind create is so they can share with others.  If no one bothers to look at/read it/listen to it then we have failed.

My name is Shannon McRoberts. I am an independent artist, author, and poet. I have been self-publishing books of all kinds since 2005. My first book was a poetry book called Poetry for the Chronically Heart Broken and Depressed. That book has since been replaced with a more robust collection called Erosion of the Heart. Aelana cowered in the corner of her tent, her blanket pulled over her head. Her knees were pulled up to her chest, her forehead resting on them. Muffled, indistinguishable voices drifted through the canvas. Fear beaded sweat on her forehead. What would happen if someone came into her tent? She had given specific orders no one should disturb her, but that didn’t always stop them. They couldn’t find her like this. Bad things might happen if they did.

“Aelana?” a familiar voice drifted into the tiny space. It was low, masculine, and soothing.

She cringed. “Go away, Thoran.”

The canvas door flopped into place, a footstep thudded on the ground.

“I’m not leaving until you tell me what’s going on.”

She inhaled a shaky breath. “I can’t.”

A few more steps sounded, and his hands wrapped around the outside of the blanket. Panic gripped her chest, and she grabbed the edge of the material.

“I’m worried about you. What’s going on? Why have you been hiding lately?” He tugged on the blanket.

“Thoran, no!” Her grip tightened on the cover.

“Aelana, stop this! You’re acting like a child!”

They played tug-of-war with the blanket for several moments. Aelana’s panic increased, and her only concern was keeping herself covered. Thoran wouldn’t understand, he wouldn’t get it. She didn’t even know what was going on. How could she explain it to anyone else? If the changes scared her, they might utterly freak out others.

“Aelana, you can talk to me. You can trust me!” The strain was evident in his voice. He jerked on the material.

He had more leverage than Aelana, and the blanket slipped from her fingers. A squeak escaped her lips as she tried to fold herself in on her own body. He placed his hands on her knees.

“Aelana, please. Talk to me.” His voice was low, pleading.

Her heart rate increased, her breathing became rapid. The desire to push him away and run into the night, disappearing into darkness, surged through her, but she fought back the urge. She wouldn’t; she couldn’t. He’d come after her. Her resolve faltered. If it had been anyone else, it would have been easy to stay strong, overpower them and leave. Thoran, however, could make her talk, make her open up. He knew her better than anyone. That was both comforting and annoying.

He placed one hand on her shoulder and the other on her forearm, pushing gently, attempting to get her to unfurl. “Don’t make me beg.”

With a grunt and a sigh, Aelana threw her arms open and kicked out her legs. Thoran fell backward. She jumped to her feet.

“Is this what you wanted?” she growled. “Are you happy with what you see?”

Thoran moved backward, his eyes wide, his mouth open. She stepped closer and loomed over him.

“Now do you understand why I’ve been hiding?”

Thoran tried to scuttle away, to head out the door. Aelana crouched down and grabbed his collar.

“What’s wrong, Thoran? Talk to me!”

He screamed and slapped her hand away before pushing her over. He crawled out the door, and she collapsed onto her knees. The weight of sadness dropped onto her shoulders. What had she done?

Aelana jerked awake, her elbows digging into the scales of the Queen’s neck. The Queen shifted slightly but didn’t wake up. Aelana took a deep breath and ran her hand down her face. Quietly and deliberately, she left the comfort of Her Highness’embrace and headed for the cave opening. Standing at the door, her gaze drifted to the peaks and rises silhouetted against the night sky. A few stars twinkled above; others were blotted out by dark clouds of rolling smoke. Aelana caught the faint scent of burning wood on the breeze.

Picking her way across the landscape, her claws scraped against the rocks. Visions of Thoran’s horrified face lingered in her mind. She found a small stream trickling down the mountain side and knelt next to it. Splashing her face with the cool liquid, she sighed and stared into the water. It was too dark to see her reflection, but she didn’t need to. There was a definite reason Thoran ran from her so long ago.

Her eyes were multifaceted, glittering like diamonds. They were no longer deep blue, human-like. Her pale skin wasn’t supple. Though it was still smooth, it was covered in tough scales. Her face was angular, the chin pointed and defined. Small knobs protruded from her forehead, the smallest hint of horns. Pointed ears lay flat against her head. Her teeth were sharp, her canines longer than the others, protruding slightly from her lips when her mouth was closed. Only her hair retained its human quality, rows upon rows of braids that traveled to the middle of her back. Her feet had morphed into powerful claws, and her hands were tipped with razor-sharp nails. She was the perfect mix of human and dragon, powerful and compassionate.

Thoran had asked repeatedly what was wrong, but she dodged his questions and concerns. Eventually, avoiding him all together. It worked for a while, until he barged into her sanctuary. What other choice did he give her but to throw her mutation in his face? Why hadn’t she left? She could have snuck away in the middle of the night. People would have noticed, but they wouldn’t have cared. The whispers would have continued, rumors would have spread, but things would have turned out differently, maybe better. Her leaving would have saved a lot of heartache.

She gazed at the sky. More stars were blotted out by dark smoke columns, and the stench of burning forest grew stronger. Slowly, Aelana made her way back to the cave. Thoran shouldn’t have found out like that, but there was no way to reveal it delicately. Still, given the chance to do it again, she’d approach the situation differently.

My Review:

One word- DRAGONS!!! I happen to like them very much, but let me say that this one is quite unique. Think dragon apocalypse. Firstly, the dragons come when it’s time for each planet to have a little apocalypse and cleanse it of all the bad, and give it a fresh start, so the planets aren’t completely depleted before it’s too late. There happens to be one girl, who is a dragon shifter hybrid. She was born human, but now is a dragon shifter- she turns into a magnificent dragon. She’s literally the bringer of doom.  When she lands on each planet, it’s because she is signalling the time. Pretty cool, eh? 

So, Aelana is your hybrid. She has lost a bit, as in everything. She lost most of her humanity when she shifted, then her family, and her true love- who rejected her when he found out centuries ago- her material possessions. But she has the dragons, who treat her more equal than her human counterparts did before she turned. And then she meets the reincarnation of her true love. This is the first time she’s questioning if she should let the planet be destroyed. And now, she’s worried that there isn’t enough time to reconnect because he has no idea who she is, though he does know the end is coming. 

I like Aelana. She’s strong, she sometimes doesn’t think like a human-but she isn’t really- and she can be funny in a not meaning to way. She’s always followed through with her orders, until now. She’s caught between saving her love and her home planet, and following the rules of the dragon world. Kalen is your typical good guy cop. He’s intrigued because he feels a connection to Aelana, but isn’t sure why. His best friend and his adopted father run a church that have signaled that it’s the end of the world, and he’s a believer, except that he wants to save as many people as possible and help everyone he can. He’s a little like a hero, except the heroes usually have something more than human, and well, he’s human. 

I really liked this one. It got a little confusing at first with Aelana in the present and Aelana having flashbacks to when she was human, but then I realized that there were a lot of things I learned from those flashbacks. I learned about the people in Aelana’s life that shaped her to be who she has become. I also learned some things about the dragons and who they are and how they work. They also aren’t always the bad guy. There’s some mystery as a lot of people want to kill the hybrid, and get their hands on her power. Plus, you will be surprised at how things all fall into place. I’m definitely a fan!! 4.5 FIERY APOCALYPTIC PAWS!!
