YA Fantasy Romance

Synopsis:  Why be the sheep, when you can be the wolf?
Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts—and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must destroy the lives of others.

Ismae’s most important assignment takes her straight into the high court of Brittany—where she finds herself woefully under prepared—not only for the deadly games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?

FROM ROBIN LAFEVERS, AUTHOR OF GRAVE MERCY
Poison: The Assassin’s Art
“We will teach you to make poisons.” Sister Serafina’s voice is as gentle as the lulling
waves. “Poisons that grip the gut and force a man’s life to dribble from him into a slop
pail. Poisons to stop the heart or squeeze the humors from the body. Bloodwort to
congeal the blood so it can no longer move through the veins. We will show you subtle
poisons that take days to fell a man, and those that kill within seconds. And that is just to
start.”

Now, onto my review, and all the lovely links for you to get it 😉

First, thank you NetGalley and it’s awesome partners for letting me review this Arc copy!! Let me start by saying that I am not one to read historical type books. The whole women and animals are property and men blindly follow the word of another man make me grit my teeth, and normal women do NOT swoon hahahaha BUT OMG!!! This book is fantastic!!! I LOVE LOVE Isme!!! I feel sorry for her in the beginning because her life was truly unfair and she has drawn some terrible cards- but boy did she make that an advantage!

This is just a great story, maybe a I have a thing for women assassins, as Jennifer Estep’s elemental assassin series is way at the top for me! But, this is a whole new set of rules because this is a whole different era with rules women had to overcome. She is so strong, but yet still vulnerable and has some weakness. I love this! I cannot tell you how well this is written, for even the best authors can make little flaws. But the language and words are perfect.

I was a little shocked at the “bad guy” for there were several here, but what a great plot twist 🙂 and Isme has some many things that run through her head, it’s hard for you to say, “just do this” or “just kill that one”… You know, just because she is an assassin and kills for a living doesn’t mean she doesn’t have a heart, or conscience. Which is the whole point of the story- should you blindly kill because you can and based on the word of others? Or should you make sure in your heart that your hand is guided by the right things? It’s just fantastic 🙂  Get it!! Quickly 🙂 5 huge paws from me!
