Moon Dwellers Review

The Moon Dwellers (The Dwellers, #1)

Ok everyone, today is the day!! I am reviewing this FANTASTIC BOOK!!! I know it took me a bit, but I’ve got it and I AM TOTALLY COMPLETELY IN LOVE!!! I don’t know what else to say other than this! so, I will give you a little blurb and then I’ll gush like a crazy person!

From Goodreads: In a desperate attempt to escape destruction decades earlier, humankind was forced underground, into the depths of the earth, creating a new society called the Tri-Realms.

After her parents and sister are abducted by the Enforcers, seventeen-year-old Adele, a member of the middle-class moon dwellers, is unjustly sentenced to life in prison for her parents’ crimes of treason.

Against all odds, Adele must escape from the Pen and find her family, while being hunted by a deranged, killing machine named Rivet, who works for the President. She is helped by two other inmates, Tawni and Cole, each of whom have dark secrets that are better left undiscovered. Other than her friends, the only thing she has going for her is a wicked roundhouse kick and two fists that have been well-trained for combat by her father.

At the other end of the social spectrum is Tristan, the son of the President and a sun dweller. His mother is gone. He hates his father. Backed by only his servant and best friend, Roc, he leaves his lavish lifestyle in the Sun Realm, seeking to make something good out of his troubled life.

When a war breaks out within the Tri-Realms, Tristan is thrust into the middle of a conflict that seems to mysteriously follow Adele as she seeks to find her family and uncover her parents true past.

In their world, someone must die.

Awesome, ain’t it! Ok, I was part of the blog tour, and I knew it was gunna be good, I just didn’t know HOW GOOD!! 🙂

Ok, so think post appocalyptic… the earth is trashed, so they build themselves a world underground to keep themselves alive, and then the build layers, to put people in classes. The lower the level, the lower the class. The book starts with Adele, 6 months ago, as her family is taken by terrible people in a terrible way. And then, she is in the “Pen” which is literally jail, but they call them “guests” and talk about their “stay” like it’s a good thing to be there. Adele is dying inside, as what else is she supposed to do. She has no idea if her father, mother, and sister are even alive any longer. And then one day she meets Tawni and Cole. *sigh* I have a thing for Cole! 🙂 And the day she meets them, she also sees Tristan, the Prince, or first son, and something strange happens. *dum dum dummmm* hahahahaha

This is an epic journey, with struggle, and trauma, and terror, and pain, and love, and friendship! I have never felt so many emotions all at one time. Mr. Estes has completely stolen my heart and sole with this book. It’s written like a gold medalist swimmer in the olympics, he’s just that good! When Adele decides that Tawni and Cole are her friends instead of enemies, it’s like one epic journey after another, and it becomes a wonderful, yet heart breaking adventure.

I will not give away too much, but Mr Estes- YOU BROKE MY HEART!!! I am not sure if I can forgive you, but I will momentarily forget when you get me book 2!! 🙂 LOL I broke down a bit for the end, and had to compose myself to finish reading.

You get two sides. You get to see things from Adele’s side, and then you get Tristan’s side. I also love Tristan’s friend/servant/bonded-brother Roc. He made me giggle lots. He’s going to be so much fun in the next book.  I seriously cannot wait to read more. As things progress, it not only becomes a race to bring Adele’s family home safe, but to try to make a change for the better for the whole world. and trust me when I say, those changes are desperately needed.

I cannot say too much more, as I do not want to spoil ANYTHING for you from this book. But I will say I am seriously irrevocably in love, lust, want, need, must-have right now, for the next book!!! WELL DONE!!!

Now you know you all want to see more, so here’s how you can find the author! and if you want to see my stop on the Moon Dwellers tour, it was HERE

Four in the Morning Book Tour Part 2 w giveaway

Today’s stop will be my review, and an excerpt of the book. Enjoy!! First, you can click on the banner above to take you to the tour host blog for the print giveaway. And the cover below will take you to goodreads. Here’s the book info and excerpt first.

Four in the Morning

My mom’s a liar.

What parents aren’t, right? They tell their kids lies about Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy. Even the Boogeyman who crouches in the shadows beneath beds has his legend whispered into the ears of young green bean-haters.

I wished my mom would use her power of deception for good. For one, I wouldn’t have to chase down people in the dark, braving the muggers and would-be rapists who lurk in the bushes on my street.

If she’d told the boy who came knocking I was upstairs in my room, then we could have had a quick—though unlikely civil—conversation on the front porch. Instead, she told him I was out with another boy.

And she didn’t just tell this to anyone. No, of course not. She told this to Josh Colby.

It was the equivalent of having some celebrity knock on your door after their car broke down. Except, as far as celebrities go, Josh’s status didn’t reach beyond the doors of our high school. We’d known each other for the many years of our educational careers, and mostly succeeded with our mutual effort to avoid speaking to one another.

Mocking doesn’t count.

I was too lazy to run for more than a block. To scream seemed an easier solution. When a male voice called back, I smiled at my small victory of intelligence over physical prowess.

He sounded close, within a block or so, but I couldn’t see him. The sliver of moon lacked radiance as it was smothered by dark clouds, but the streetlights were enough to confirm there was no silhouette of him on the sidewalk. He must have cut through a neighbor’s yard to head back to his house on the next street over.

“What did you want?” I winced at the sudden, sharp brilliance of lightning. Spots did flip-flops against the stretched shadows on the grass as my vision tried to recover. The scent of ozone carried on the cool breeze blended with that of a fresh cut lawn.

“That you, Elchubba?”

Elchubba is not my name. Not even close. Not that many of the kids at my school cared, and several might even be shocked to discover my real name was Kathleen. Not Kathy. Definitely not Elchubba. To my eternal frustration, I won that clever little nickname in junior high. Mostly because Ryan Dixon is a jerk, but also because I was horizontally challenged and usually clad in black from hair strand-to-toenail polish. It’s to do with Elvira. Lame, I know.

I just hoped Josh hadn’t asked my mother if Elchubba was home. I wouldn’t put it past him. Instead of correcting him, I turned on my heel and headed home. I didn’t answer him on principle.

My house was still a sadistic distance from me when I heard Josh stumble through some bushes near the sidewalk behind me. Oh, heavy black boots, how you’ve failed me again.

He mumbled a curse behind me after the distinct sound of his rubber soles tripping over a crack in the sidewalk. I didn’t slow down. Maybe he would follow me all the way back to my front door so I could slam it in his face.

He outpaced me to step into my path. I considered knocking him on his boney ass. I had the weight and momentum to do it. A whiff of whatever cheap, man-scent product he used to attract girls assaulted my nose. It reminded me of dish soap and burnt popcorn.

“Please, would you just stop?” Josh said.

“Fine. What do you want?”

A car horn blared a few blocks away, followed by the squeal of tires. Josh glanced around like a super-secret spy.

My response was an eye roll and crossed arms. If he didn’t want to be seen talking to me, then he shouldn’t have answered me. For that matter, he shouldn’t have come over.

Josh said, “I need you to do me a favor.”

The laugh that escaped me sounded more maniacal than I expected. “You’re high.”

Great. I wound up chasing a boy I hated down the street to do a favor for him. It was not the pinnacle of my existence. At least I hope not.

“No, I’m serious.” Josh leaned closer and dropped his voice. “I’ll pay you.”

“Then it’s not a favor. It’s a business proposition,” I said. “If you’re going to pay me for services—of the non-prostitutional variety—then it’s a business arrangement, not a favor. A favor I’d do for free.”

The hopeful look that passed his face prompted me to add, “For friends, not for you.”

“Okay, whatever.” Josh fished in a pocket of his too-baggy jeans and pulled out a folded bill. It was too dark for me to see which president. He smiled, his teeth a perfect picket fence of glaring white. “I want you to write a letter for me.”

My eyebrows lifted without my permission. “A letter? To who?” I didn’t ask why me. I was editor for the school paper and wrote for the quarterly lit magazine.

“I’m not telling you unless you agree to do it.”

My eyes narrowed. “I’m not going to be suckered into writing a bomb threat or some stalker letter to a model you masturbate to.”

“No, no. It’s nothing like that.” Josh slouched and lowered the hand which held the bill to his side. “I was watching some old movie on TV tonight, and it got me thinking—”

I snorted.

“I’m serious, stop it. Well, this guy writes letters for a girl, but they’re from another guy who likes her.”

You watched Cyrano de Bergerac?”

“Who? No, it was Roxy or Roseanne or something.”

Roxanne?” I shook my head. “You were inspired by Steve Martin. Of course. You noticed that didn’t end well for the one guy, right?”

“Well, yeah. But that’s because the guy writing the letters steals her away. That won’t happen with us because you’re a girl. I mean, unless you’re a lezbo.”

My frown was so deep, my brows nearly touched. “How politically correct of you.”

“Oh. . . you mean you are?” He stepped away as if he’d just realized I was Typhoid Mary.

I was offended on behalf of sexual libertines everywhere. “Yes, and we’re highly contagious. You better leave before you start wanting love letters for Ryan instead of whichever girl gets your mangina tingling.”

For the record, I’m not a lesbian, but I didn’t care what he thought.

“Well, she’s not,” Josh said. “So it wouldn’t matter if you liked her or not.” He lifted up the bill again. “I’ll give you twenty dollars to write a letter that a girl would like, and make it sound like me.”

I chuckled. “Those two concepts don’t mesh.”

“Just take it, all right?”

“No, I’m pretty sure my morals exclude this . . . escapade of falsehood.”

“What? Jesus, why can’t you talk like other people?”

“My intellect prevents it, sadly.” My wry smile belied any regret.

“No, you just like being freaky little Elchubba,” he shot back. “Only not so little.” He glared at me as he stuffed the money back in his pocket, and then strode away in a huff.

He couldn’t have been more wrong. I didn’t like being Elchubba at all. I didn’t like being called that, I didn’t like being overweight, and I didn’t like that I had to go back into my house and explain to Darth Mother who Josh was and why I chased him down the street.

Sometimes, I feel like life is trying to swallow me whole. I do my best to flail about and get caught in its throat. More than once I’ve been sure I was hanging onto life’s uvula by my fingernails. Which, of course, just tickles life’s throat until it coughs me back out.

God, I’m tired of being coated in life’s phlegm.

But my curiosity was piqued. What girl could Josh possibly think was worth all this trouble?

Sounds so interesting right… Well, here’s my thought on how I feel…

Ok this is a oddly weird but enjoyable book. First, I completely understand Kathleen. She’s cute but chubby, so she has some issues in high school. I can’t relate to her on the parent issue though, I had a great mom and she has horrible ones. I like the characters, and the story is very interesting but I did feel there could have been a little bit more in the climax. The story builds very well and the climax happens and it’s all over. Now let me make clear that I’m not saying this story isn’t well written or it’s a bad story. I did NOT have trouble getting through it, or find it boring, just a lil sumtin more could be there.

Now with that said, I really like Kathleen. I completely feel her food habit- I have one of my own lol- but I live in south Louisiana Cajun country, so everyone here does 🙂 when her mother-evil- takes away all edible food and leave veggies and cardboard, she takes a payoff for writing a letter for a boy she doesn’t like to a girl she hates and they are both friend with her arch enemy. Hehhe so high school, eh!

I like the mystery part. Trying to figure out who did what to whom was what really kept me interested. Her mom goes missing, her arch enemy attacks her then shows up dead, she finds out mind blowing info about her parents and the big whopper of a lie they’ve told her, and to top it off, a talking albino skunk is making her insane.

The part I felt missing is this, I’m all about the “why”. Ya know, vampires and werewolves hate each other because….. Well, all these actions lead to this conclusion because… I didn’t like that explanation. Lol yes I know, I didn’t write the book, so I shouldn’t get to pick the “why” it happened. I DID like how it unfolded, and even the conclusion, so please don’t NOT read this book because I’ve said I didn’t like the “why”. If this book continued into a series, I would still pick up book 2 cuz I did like it. There’s many good things about this book which is why I’m not giving it a bad rating. I actually hope it does continue. I’m glad how things turned out for Kathleen, Aka and Josh and I’m not at all sorry about her mom nor her dad! 🙂 so now you can add this book to your huge TBR pile 🙂

Here’s a little about the author!

Christi Goddard
Christi was born in Arlington, Texas in the early seventies. Her earliest memories are of seeing Jaws and Star Trek: The Motion Picture in the theater. The first was a bit much for a pre-K kid to take, and the second has much to do with what has inspired her imagination. Her father is a bit of nomad, and they moved a lot when she was a kid. She inherited this trait, and has lived many places and been just about everywhere in America. She hit puberty in Colorado, got married in Las Vegas, had her first child in Kansas, her second in Illinois. She returned to Texas just shy of turning thirty and has been there ever since. Books are Christi’s first love, followed closely by movies. She loves to be told stories, and for most of her literate life, she’s been a storyteller as well. Christi is in her thirties, a mother of two awesome teenage girls, and a geek on many levels. Comic books, Victorian manga, science fiction, fantasy, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, Star Wars, and renaissance festivals are her greatest loves. She lives in Waco, Texas (keep Waco Whacko) with her family and lovable dog, Nelly. She has a cat named Snape who is black, full of bad attitude, and thinks he runs the place. He was deftly named.

Fractured Light Book Tour w. Giveaway

Hello everyone!! Today I am so excited to be part of this tour! It’s a fantastic book! I have a guest post, a character interview, and a review for you, so I will get right to it, since I have so many goodies for you, including TWO GIVEAWAYS!!! 🙂 yes, I know I am just so cool!! 🙂

Fractured Light

From Goodreads: Llona Reese is used to living on the run. After the Vykens killed her parents, she knew they would eventually come for her too. But she never felt ready to face them—until now. Defying the Auran Council and everything she’s been taught, Llona must learn to use her power over light as a weapon if she wants to survive.

And now that you know a little something about the book, I’ll give you my review.

First, lemme just say I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I knew I wanted to read this book. So when I was offered to take part in the blog tour, I jumped right on it! It’s considered YA paranormal, but I also consider it urban fantasy as well. Let me explain a little bit. An Aura is not really a witch, but kinda, as they can harness energy from themselves and the things around them to produce powers, which they call “the light”. Sure, some things like literal light can be manipulated, but things like strength, and appearance changes, and other powers are included. You do have to read this to understand, but you at least get a gist of something.

Llona is a scared, and in hiding, appearing timid, girl. She isn’t actually timid, she just wants to appear to be, to keep herself in hiding. She knows that one day, the bad guys will find her, and she’ll be dead, as she could never fight them to survive. But in all this, she finds out her best friend, her crush, and her teacher, are all “special” like her, just a different kind of special. 🙂 And she is learning to come of her shell, and learning a whole lot of other things as well. Secrets from her past, and her future are literally pounding on her.

Even through all of these things, Llona learns and grows. Now sometimes this can make a book boring, but I didn’t have any trouble reading this book in one sitting, and I will say it’s a fun, face paced read. I really cannot wait for book 2 to come out! and the characters!!! Everyone knows I love secondary characters. This book is just filled with great side kicks 🙂 LOL Well, Christian is just yummy! I lurvs him!! And her friend May, I can’t tell you how much I wanna meet her! She even has this cool uncle that I think would be my perfect boyfriend!

Now I will give you this, the first book does not include any actual scenes at Lucent academy, but the whole process of going there for different reasons, and I am dying to see how May and Llona are gunna do once they get there! 🙂 Please hurry and gimme gimme book 2!! 🙂 5 PAWS!!

And with that review, I’d like to introduce Llona, as she is a guest today on my blog… I had several questions I had to ask her 🙂 WELCOME LLONA!!

Thank you for taking the time to speak with me, Llona. I know you’re busy at Lucent Academy. How’s it going there anyway?

It’s not too bad, I guess. Usual new girl crap, but I’ve got May with me so I can deal.

How do you feel May will do at Lucent Academy?

May will do awesome. Already the girls think she’s amazing and it’s not just because she is a Fury. She’s a great listener and really cares about others. There’s nothing fake about her.

Back at Highland High, you were on the basketball team, but I was a little confused by this because you also had a strong desire for anonymity. Can you explain this?

It was hard for me to be on the basketball team because I did get attention, but it would’ve been harder for me not to play. I secretly love the competition even though sports like that are forbidden among Auras. But it was worth the lectures I received from my aunt Sophie who sits on the Auran Council.

Did you enjoy learning to fight?

I did! It’s so empowering. I think in another life I was a ninja master or something.

In the end, when you were fighting with the Vyken, something bad happened. I won’t spoil it for readers, but I think you know what I’m talking about. How has that changed you?

(glances away) I’m not sure yet. But I feel different. Like a part of me is changing, and whatever it is, is dark and contentious. I hope it goes away soon.

What do you see happening between you and Christian?

A week ago, I would’ve said the sky’s the limit, but after the way I’ve been feeling, I don’t know. I don’t want Christian to be disappointed. Or hurt. I have to figure out what’s going on with me before I consider a relationship with him.

What do you want to get out of Lucent Academy?

I want to learn about the Auran history. I just can’t believe Auras have always been so docile, especially after the stories my mother told me. I think if I research it enough, I’ll discover the truth. I also hope to develop my ability. I feel there’s so much untapped potential. And maybe I’ll find something that will help with what I’m going through.

Any advice you’d give to a younger Aura?

Trust your instincts. And open up to others. You’ll make some amazing friends that way.

Isn’t she fantastic!! Thanks so much Llona for stopping by today! I’m so glad I got to meet you, and I’m so excited to continue your story & adventure! 🙂

And now, I’d like to introduce you to the author!

Rachel McClellan

Rachel McClellan was born and raised in Idaho, a place secretly known for its supernatural creatures. When she’s not in her writing lair, she’s partying with her husband and four crazy, yet lovable, children. Rachel’s love for storytelling began as a child when the moon first possessed the night. For when the lights went out, her imagination painted a whole new world. And what a scary world it was…

Where you can find Rachel

And Now, I’d Like to welcome Ms. McClellan to my blog for a guest post of her own! Thanks so much for being here and WELCOME!!

Why I Write

There are a select few who claim to see dead people. I’m not one of them, but I do see characters, and, honestly, some of them are just as scary. The other day I reached for a hanger that had slid partially beneath an attic door in the back of my son’s closet. Just as my fingers touched the hard, white plastic, something, or someone, sucked the hanger into the attic. It was only a moment later that I realized the thing in my attic is the ghost of a seriously pissed-off, murdered woman.

None of this happened, of course. It was only in my imagination, but now the woman is there. Stuck inside my head as much as she’s stuck in my attic. She joins the countless others who are just waiting for their story to be told. I listen best I can, and when I have time I write down their stories. The sooner the better.

It wasn’t always this way. There was a time when I could look at an oddly-shaped tree and keep walking; the deep hole in its side was merely a squirrel’s home and not an entrance to a world where humans hide at night and travel at day to avoid the growing number of Junks (those who have had their humanity turned off by the Authorities).

At first I tried ignoring the characters, pretended they didn’t exist. But this only made them louder. When their cries started to contend with that of my children’s, I knew I had to listen. It took some time, but eventually I found a way to balance my own life with that of theirs.

Llona wasn’t the first character I wrote about, but she was the loudest, and, gratefully, wasn’t as scary as the others. I like writing about her. She makes me laugh so I’m glad she has more to say in the sequel of Fractured Light.

Those of you interested in writing, listen to characters. They’re all around us desperately waiting to be heard. Help them find their voice. Work hard. Stay focused. And most importantly don’t give up on them. They only want to exist.

I would just like to say thank you so much for sharing that, and I love your writing, so I think you should just keep doing what you’re doing!! And now I know you are all dying to know what’s the giveaways!! so here we go…

Descension Review

Hello everyone! Today I am just being a normal reviewer and posting a nice review for a book! LOL So here ya go!! 🙂

You can click on the image and it’ll take you to goodreads! 🙂 here’s my review!!

Ok, so one day, I got this cool message asking if I wanted to review this book from the author… I usually don’t but this book sounded so intriguing that I accepted. Boy, I’m sure glad I did, as this book was fascinating to me 🙂 I like fun new ideas! Layla is a depressed, boring, monotonous girl. Her friends try their hardest to make her life a little better. I loved the two characters from her diner, which is where the story starts, during her very boring life. 🙂 Then, upon her mother’s death, she has some affairs to settle and learns something CRAZY!! She is adopted, and boy was her real family gunna throw her for a loop! In a letter from her dead mother, she decides to take the advice and find her biological family.

Upon finding this, large, but awesome, new family, she finds out she’s a witch with awesome powers, her family is very very cool, and treat her like royalty, and she has fallen in love! Magic is awesome! And then she really learns some very sad, but honest truths. I cried, literally, like tears flowing and red faced, and nose-blowing cries. I’m not saying this book is sad, but sometimes sad things happen. I should also say it’s hard to make me cry for a book- I can count on one hand the times this has happened… Harry Potter for Dumbledore’s death, and then Harry’s were two of those times!!

Now Quin, I WANT him, is just awesome. He’s beautiful, and hot, and sweet, and caring, and willing to go to the ends of earth for her, literally! He loved her before he knew her, as magic has its ways of putting two people together! 🙂

And of course, there’s bad guys! Argo scares me. Not because he is necessarily the most powerful, but because he in completely evil with no regards to anything but his wants and needs, and no ones life. He is willing to kill the world to get his hands on Layla, as he wants her power!

I really enjoyed this book. It’s written beautifully, and the scenes are described so perfectly I could picture them like I were there. I cannot give you too much, as I would never want to spoil anything for you, but I think everyone should check this out. It’s a perfect fairy tale, paranormal romance. 🙂 I’m not sure if this is going to continue as a series, but I sure hope so, as I need more, and there’s an ending that leaves room for more! 🙂 YAY! 5 PAWS from me!

Author Interview with Mallory Kane

Hello everyone! Today I’ve got Mallory Kane here, to be interrogated, I mean interviewed by me. I recently had a post about her book with my review, and you can check that post out HERE. That will show you her goodies!! Welcome Ms. Kane, and thanks so much for being here!! 🙂 So let’s get to it!! 🙂

Maghon: Do you recall how your interest in writing originated or did you always just know?

The first time I recall wanting to write was when I was eight or nine and wrote a poem called Miss Mousie Had A Tea Party. As I recall–just like these days–the idea just came to me.

Maghon: What inspired you to write your first book and what was it?

My very first book was an historical romance called Stranger In My Arms. It was written in first person and when finished, was around 70.000 words. That might be a good length today, but when I wrote it, my first rejection letter, from Avon, said the book should be in third person and at least 100,000 words.

Maghon: Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

Experiences of people in my books? I take personality traits and attributes from people I know, and of course, from myself. But in my romantic suspense novels, the experiences of the hero and heroine as they run from the bad guys and/or try to solve the crime, are based on reading and watching TV.

Maghon: How do you chose when/which characters die in your books?

Well, the hero and heroine never do! So readers can depend on me on that count. I never thought about actually choosing. They die if their death is necessary for the story.

Maghon: Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

A young adult author named Juli Alexander is very good. I enjoy her YA novels. What often happens to me is, I discover an author who is new to me. Such a one is the author of Killing Critics. Right now my power is out–we’re having a thunderstorm–so I can’t double check the author’s name but I believe it’s Carol O’Connell.

Maghon: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your book?

In No Hero. No, I wouldn’t. Before the editors would approve No Hero for production, they and I went over it carefully, to make it the best book it could be. There may be errors in grammar or spelling, or errors in continuity, which would be my fault, but as far as Dev, my hero and Reghan Connor, my heroine and the story–no. Not a word.

Maghon: Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Like a lot of writers, I have trouble with the middle of the book. I love writing the first 3 to 4 chapters, where the hero and heroine are introduced, the danger is established and the hero and heroine discover they must work together to solve the mystery and stay alive. I love the ending–the climax and the denouement. Actually the denouement is why I write the book. That last scene where the hero and heroine confront each other and finally work out their issues and admit or discover that they love each other.

Maghon: What book are you reading now? Or what genre?

I’m currently reading Sherri Kenyon’s Born of Shadows. I adore the book and I adore her. She and I were unpublished in Jackson, Mississippi together. Born of Night (or Born of The Night as it was originally published,) and Born of Fire were published (one print, one electronic,) while we were both in Jackson. That was the beginning of her incredible success. And no one deserves success more than she does.

Maghon: Who designed the covers? And do you help with them?

I have worked as a cover artist for over 18 years and designed covers for a lot of very famous and well-respected authors. I love designing covers–probably second to writing. I designed all the covers on my short stories that are currently available on Kindle. But no, I didn’t contribute to the design of the cover for No Hero. But isn’t it FANTASTIC!!!! What a gorgeous hunk! Okay, I did request a gorgeous hunk on the cover.

Maghon: Did you learn anything from writing your books and what was it?

What I have learned from writing and from my dear author friends, is that imagination is boundless. All we have to do is open our minds, (not an easy task.) If we allow our minds to range free and don’t restrict ourselves by convention, by others’ expectations or by shyness or fear, there is no limit to what we can do.

Maghon: If you could be one of your characters, who would you chose?

Hah! Great question. I have to confess, I pretty much am Reghan Connor, the heroine in No Hero. Minus the stalker, the diabolical maniac in prison who will only talk to her, and the person who attacks her. The control-freak part, the annoyingly inquisitive part, the I-know-I’m-right part. That’s all me. The big difference in Reghan and me is our attitude toward heroes. She doesn’t believe in heroes. I have four in my life. My father, who was and is my ultimate hero, my husband, and my two brothers. They rock!

Maghon: Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

I’d like to thank the readers who pick up a Mallory Kane book and like it, those who will jot me a line or write a review telling me that they enjoyed a book, those who light up when they see my name tag at a conference (that never gets old, let me tell you,) and those who write me to say that something in one of my books has touched them. Many if not most writers don’t write because it’s an easy way to make tons of money. Trust us, it’s not. We write because, well, because we’re writers. We have to write. To know that there are folks out there who appreciate what we write, whom we’ve touched in some way through our made-up stories, is worth more than money. Thank you, all of you.

Thanks so much for inviting me to your site. The questions are great. I really enjoyed answering them.

Keep on reading,

Mallory Kane

Thanks so much everyone, for stopping by today, and as always happy reading my gators!! 🙂

Another Personal Note with Reviews!

Hello everyone, and Happy Tuesday! Today I am gunna touch on something that some of you may know about and some of you may not. First, I WILL NOT be changing any review policies. I will review for anyone who asks nicely- that’s ALL TYPES OF PUBLISHED AUTHORS! Some things have been happening in the blogging world, and a lot of people are no longer working with self published authors, due to one meanie! I love finding new authors, and working with anyone, no matter what type of publishing they do. I am so sorry for those of you who have been singled out, and I really hope that most people know that not all of us are bad. I blog as a hobby, so I PROMISE to always review ANY book given to me for this purpose, sometimes it just may take a little time, as I have a full time job, a part time job, and a whole lot of crazy personal things going on at the time. I WILL NEVER not review something given to me. If I cannot review immediately, or don’t think I will like it, I will tell you this before I take a book from you. Also, I WILL NOT post negative reviews. Yes, I know some people want the negative parts, but I will find A NICE WAY to say something I don’t like. If I really do not like the book, I will tell you this, as that is not who I am. I DO NOT like to say bad things about people, or books, or writing style, etc. There are also some genres I don’t like, so I’ll let you know someone I trust who does. You can use that reference if you chose to or not.

BLAH! so with all that said, LOL, I will now talk in normal speak. I have read several books in the last months, and haven’t had a spot to post my reviews, so today, I will do this. And to make it easy, I will NOT post the whole review, but I will leave you a link, with my rating, for you to check out. I have several books, which would make for a very large post, and no one wants to read through that. LOL Also, I’m gunna give you a few things to look forward to as well. July was a very busy month with lots of blog tours and posts, August and September will probably be a little less busy, with the new house thing, new job thing, AAD2012, etc. I haven’t been signing up for too many. I will try my hardest to keep my blog up though, as without giveaways and fun stuff, nobody wants to hang out with me hahahahaha so now, let’s get on with it!

I will post a picture of the cover, and you can click each cover and it will take you to my review on goodreads.

Prince of Wolves (The Grey Wolves, #1)

Blood Rites (The Grey Wolves, #2)

Just One Drop (The Grey Wolves, #3)

Out Of The Dark (The Grey Wolves, #4)

I decided some of you should see some of my favorite quotes from these books!! enjoy! 🙂

“Kiss me, k-k-kiss me, infect me with your love, and fill me with your poison, take me, t-t-take me, wanna be your victim, ready for abduction boy, you’re a werewolf, your touch is so furry, its supernatural, extra-werewolf-iestrial,” Jen sung as loud as she could.” ― Quinn Loftis, Blood Rites
Incase you didn’t catch on, Jen sings this in the tune of Katy Perry’s ET LOL oh boy, fantastic scene!
“Alright then, I guess that’s settled,” Lilly said, then she turned to Fane, “Lay a paw on my little girl and you will be a three legged Lassie, got it?” Fane winced and then asked, “You both do realize I’m a wolf not a dog right?” ― Quinn Loftis, Prince of Wolves

“She gets a man who will love her completely and faithfully. She gets a man who will not only save her life, but lay down his own to keep her safe. He will provide for her no matter the cost, he will shelter her against all storms that come their way, he will be the one to bring a smile to her face when no one else can. She gets a friend, a lover, a mate, the only man in this world who can complete her and give her the other half of her soul.” ― Quinn Loftis, Blood Rites

“When you say gorgeous,” Jen started, “are we talking Brad Pitt boyish good looks, or Johnny Depp make ya want to slap somebody?” “No, we’re talking Brad and Johnny need to bow down and recognize” Jacque answered.
Quinn Loftis, Prince of Wolves

“Do all of you think we have fleas?” Decebel asked as he looked at Jen and Sally.
going floating, leave my body glowing.” “Katy Perry? She’s singing Katy Perry in the hospital bathroom. Just when you think you’ve seen it all,” Sally mumbled. She knocked on the door again. Still no answer, so she started banging. Then she was banging and hollering, “JEN! OPEN THE FREAKING DOOR!” Wouldn’t you know, she just sang louder. Why am I not surprised, she thought.” ― Quinn Loftis, Blood Rites
ok, I actually have a ton more quoted, but I will have to save them for another time 🙂 seriously, if you aren’t liking these, we can no longer be friends LOL 🙂 ok, and for my last book, yes it’s another werewolf book. If you hadn’t noticed, I LOVE WEREWOLVES!!! 🙂
Darkness & Light (Holloway Pack, #1)

Thanks so much for stopping my today and listening to me blab and happy reading everyone!! 🙂

Ella Bella Book Tour w giveaway

Hello everyone! I would like to tell you about this book I’m part of the tour! It’s a fun YA book! Today, I’ll give you all the goodies, and then I’ll introduce you to the author.

Ella Bella

Set in 2001, Ella Drake has just experienced two terrible losses: her father’s death and her brother going overseas to fight the war against terrorism.

Just when things start to calm down in her life, her mother’s job is outsourced to India.

Frightened, Ella tries to find security for herself and her mother. The search for security leads to a children’s bookstore, a new friend, and her first kiss. And possibly, it paves the way for healing to begin.

From the bestselling author of I Woke Up In Love This Morning, Ella Bella explores loss and how lives can be changed.

Short Excerpt:

Everything changed that autumn.

I know that sounds like such a cliche, but it was true. I started high school, and I was trying to become someone else. This was incredibly stressful, reinventing yourself. I had no idea how Madonna did it every year.

Gone was the girl who wore pink barrettes and chewed gum. I braided my hair in dozens of braids. Mom took one look at it and she declared, “Your hair looks like a rat’s nest.” I didn’t care. It was my hair. I even thought about going by real name Eleanor, but realized that for better or worse, my name was Ella. Or if you asked my brother Derek, Cinderella.

And now, I would like to introduce you to the author, as she is my guest interview for today! WELCOME!!

Maghon: Do you recall how your interest in writing originated or did you always just know?

Jennifer: I was always a reader; I was just someone who loved words. I loved stories. When I was ten and reading a Nancy Drew I thought you know, I could do this.

Maghon: What inspired you to write your first book and what was it?

Jennifer: With the first ebook I was testing the waters. I read about Amanda Hocking and was just amazed. Here was someone who thought Okay, I can tell a good story. I’m going to put myself out there. I kept waiting for the right time to send it out to an agent and see what happened. However I was about to turn forty, and I wanted desperately to get my work out there in the world. So I put out a mini short story collection titled I Woke Up In Love This Morning. I’m not making Amanda Hocking money, but I put my work out there in the world.

Maghon: Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

Jennifer: With Ella Bella, it started with a real life event. Ten years ago my mother’s job was outsourced to India. A couple of years before my grandfather died unexpectedly. Suddenly I had a story. I knew Ella just went through a terrible time, and it was up to me to write it down. While it began with a nugget of my mother’s job being outsourced, Joan (Ella’s mom) is definitely not my mother. Joan is very passive and very much in denial about what is going on in her life. That is so not my mother. Ella and I do have things in common: we have loyal friends, a fondness for French Fries, and we’re both bad at volleyball.

Maghon: How do you chose when/which characters die in your books?

Jennifer: I knew Anthony (Ella’s dad) was going to die from the beginning. There’s been times in my life when I think okay, I went through something terrible, but I’m okay now. But what I’ve learned is that grief comes in waves. Sometimes it just hits you out of nowhere a person you adored is gone, and somehow you have to muddle your way through it.

Maghon: I completely understand this! Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest or that you recommend, other than yourself of course?

Jennifer: Most definitely moi!! I love Nina LaCour’s writing; we went to Mills College together and I knew right away she was going places. Jessica Anthony’s Chopsticks blew me away. I’m definitely looking forward to David Abrams’ first novel Fobbit; I’ve been a follower of his blog for years and I know it’s going to be great.

Maghon: Who do you look up to as a writer?

Jennifer: So many authors spring to mind: Judy Blume for always telling the truth and risking censorship. Beverly Cleary for Ramona Quimby. Meg Cabot for her humor and her output. Anne Lamott for her honesty. Ann M. Martin for creating Baby-Sitter Club and with the proceeds donating it to charities. I also admire poet Susan Browne; she was a teacher of mine at Diablo Valley College and taught me to always improve my craft and never settle for less. I was incredibly saddened by Nora Ephron’s death; she was so incredibly funny and smart.

Maghon: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your book?

Jennifer: Truth? Not sure. Part of me wishes I could’ve had a starred review in Publishers Weekly and advertising in the New York Times. However, nothing in my life has been traditonal, so why should my writing life be any different?

Maghon: Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Jennifer: I have a processing disorder, which means I process information differently than others. I also have a learning disability with my handwriting making it illegible. I know, pretty darned ironic. So I learned to type at a young age and learned to copensate. I learned in my writing in order to make it what I wanted it, it would require many many drafts and patience on my part.

Maghon: What book are you reading now? Or what genre?

Jennifer: In honor of A Wrinkle in Time’s 50th anniversary, I’m finally reading Madeleine L’Engle’s books. To be honest I was never a science fiction/fantasy person, but this summer I decided to just read her. Now I’m kicking myself that it took me so long! I would love for Mrs. Murry to serve me lunch in the kitchen with classical music playing in the background.

Maghon: `Who designed the cover? And do you help with them?

Jennifer: With my first ebook a friend of a friend did it. The second and third I did it myself. All three of them I chose photos from royality free sites. With Ella I wanted a girl with red hair, plus I wanted her to look melancholy. Not sobbing crying, just melancholy. I was lucky to find the right picture.

Maghon: Have you ever bought a book based on the cover?

Jennifer: The first Luxe book by Anna Godbersen. The pink dress! The mysterious looking girl! I had to read more about her.

Maghon: Did you learn anything from writing your books and what was it?

Jennifer: To always tell a good story, and to trust myself in the process.

Maghon: I think this is excellent advice! If you could be one of your characters, who would you chose?

Jennifer: I really love Ella’s grandmother Penny. She is someone that truly loves to sing, being in her garden, and name a musical, she’s seen it. She’s someone I wish I could be more like.

Maghon: Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Jennifer: First off thank you for reading this! I hope you enjoy my work and it makes you forget your troubles for a while, and that you’re entertained. Also if you’re a writer you should read and write every day, don’t forget to revise, and never give up.

thank you so much for that wonderful interview! Now for the giveaway! The tour host is offering 3 ebook copies of Ella Bella, so head on over HERE and enter for your chance to win!! GOOD LUCK, and yes, it’s international!! 🙂

I would like to thank Ms. Jennifer, Bewitching Book Tours, and all of my readers for participating today! and as always, happy reading my gators!

Now, here’s my review…

First, I wanna say that I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but I’m so glad I opted to read this one. Theo wakes up surrounded blood and a demon of some sort is eating bodies and blood around her. So I was thinking dark, gothic type writing. It does have a sense of this but it’s not dark, it’s a great story. I love when things are different and fresh. Theo is 26, yet the last thing she remembers was the evening of her 16th birthday. And lemme just tell you, this kids family takes the betrayal soap opera award!! You’ll be totally shaken up with all the things this poor girl has to go through.

An yet, I LOVE her character. She knows she’s freaking out, as she has no memories from the last 10 years, and she’s getting snippets from before but it’s painful. She’s got people around her she doesn’t know if she’s supposed to trust or stay away from. She’s got powers that she is literally terrified of. She knows she’s being lied to. And yet again, she’s my hero! I really wanna hug her. 🙂

And then there’s Hugh and Ren! Hugh is HAWT and has some seriously awesome powers, while Ren is HAWT but human! I was biased from the beginning but I liked them both so much that I would have been ok with her choosing either man. I’m really glad who she chose though but she isn’t left without a little damage. So yes yummy hot guys, but I dont think I can qualify this as a love triangle. Even with two different guys. You’ll just have to read.

I read this book in one sitting, and no it isn’t short, but it’s so good. I would classify it more on the fantasy side, with a distopian feel. And I would say its cool for YA on the mature side. There isn’t any sex scenes but some scenes are a little graphic & there’s some torture situations. Oh and awesome castles!! 🙂 so, a great book worthy of my 5 PAWS!! 🙂

And I’d like to say thanks to everyone who let me participate!! I cannot wait to read book 2 and the YA companion!! Happy reading everyone!!

Resurrection, a YA Paranormal Romance (Book 2 of The Guardians of Vesturon Series)Determinant, a YA Paranormal Romance (Book 3 of The Guardians of Vesturon)

Now that you know about these, let’s continue! Here’s a little sneak peek for you…

I was lost in the events of the day and the amount of work I had and I was still nursing my wounded ego as I headed out of the lab. As I made my way down the corridor, I noticed six men advancing toward me.

It wasn’t their actions I noticed so much or even the way they walked. And though it was an oddity for them to even be here at all, it was their attire that captured my attention. They were dressed identically, in an extreme fashion, much like members of a gang or secret society. Large and muscular, they wore black vests and their bare arms were almost completely tattooed with tribal symbols of a sort. Metal bands criss-crossed their chests and their legs were tightly encased in leather. Knee high boots and black gloves finished off their ensembles.

As I neared them I felt my flesh tingle and the hairs on the back of my neck come to attention. Gooseflesh erupted and alarms started clanging in my head. I sucked in my breath and as I did, my eyes connected with the apparent leader. I say this because he was in the front of the formation as they plodded along.

Time stood still as our eyes connected. His were an uncanny shade, lavender with hints of indigo and specks of silver. It was a hue I was unfamiliar with but they were intriguing and fascinating. The alarms were still ringing in my ears and the air felt electrically charged around us.

I turned into stone. I couldn’t move a muscle. He cocked his head as his eyes bore into mine.

I distinctly heard his command in my mind and I was helpless to disobey him. I felt myself take a deep cleansing breath. I questioned him with my eyes. He flicked his head toward his men and they stepped back several feet.

“Who are you? Why are you here?”

I was confused by the demanding questions swirling in my brain but felt compelled to answer him. I had never used mind reading to communicate, but I was sure he would hear my answer.

“I’m January St. Davis. I’m here working on an internship for college credit.”

“You are human?” he asked with incredulity.

I wasn’t sure what he meant by that. Why would he want to know if I was human? What a ridiculous question!

Here’s how I felt about this book….

First, I know this is book 3, but I felt like you could jump in and read this one alone. It’s written well enough that you get background and info without a dumping of it. Yes, you will know that there has been events in the past, but it wouldn’t hinder reading for you. I know I’ve just said its written well, but I love this writer’s style! And of course I love the whole book.

January is a broken, scared, depressed, defeated girl, yet somehow she survives all these terrible things. Thank goodness she does, as she gets a GREAT ending, but I have a feeling we’ll see her around in the future! I started out feeling sorry for her, and ended with feeling empowered and loved!!

Rykerian, well who wouldn’t swoon and drool and stare like a star struck teenager! But I will say I liked him so much as he has flaws! He loses it with January as he’s so overwhelmed. Now don’t get me wrong, he was an ass, but that was so hot, as he has real life characteristics!! 🙂

There is so many wonderful things about this story, and the whole series for that matter! I will not say a bad word about this book! 5 GREAT BIG PAWS from me!!! 🙂 hands down!

And here’s my character interview with Rykerian! … WELCOME!!

Maghon: Tell the world a little bit about yourself and where you come from?

Rykerian: I’m sure you know I’m from Vesturon, which is quite an extraordinary place. Some have called it the true Eden, although I would be hesitant to place that label on it. Since it is my home, I am a bit biased in my opinion of it, but I think if you could imagine the most picturesque places on Earth and roll them into one place, you could perhaps have an idea of what Vesturon looks like. As for me, I am just your average Guardian trying to do his best to keep tthe evil demons at bay.

Maghon: Now tell me how you felt when you first saw January in those woods and realized who she was?

Rykerian: My heart stopped beating and the Earth stood still when I saw her lying there, so close to death. I don’t like to think of that terrible day.

Maghon: Now that you’ve found January, do you believe in happily ever after forever?

Rykerian: No. I know without a doubt, I shall live it with January. That’s the way it is with soul mates, you see.

Maghon: As a stunningly handsome male, why were you never interested in other girls before January?

Rykerian: Most of the females that showed an interest in me were not subtle about their feelings. They were bold and aggressive, much to my annoyance. Anyone that knows me well, can attest to the fact that I am profoundly introspective and tend to shy away from behavior such as that. My mother always lamented that fact and worried about my lack of enthusiasm over the female attention I recieved. I always knew it would take a certain someone to peak my interest…someone special, like January.

maghon: well, awww!!! 🙂 Do you ever feel burdened by being a Guardian instead of blessed? And maybe explain a little about what a Guardian is…

Rykerian: Certainly. As a Guardian, you are faced with obligations and responsibilities that sometimes you would rather avoid. For instance, the situation we face with the Xanthians will require my involvement and I am not certain how active of a role I will have to play in it, but now that January is in my life, this brings a whole new dimension to my role as a Guardian. January is adamantly opposed to my going back to Xanthus, for obvious reasons, but as a Guardian, I am also sworn to uphold my duty. So you see, it is both a blessing and a curse.

Maghon: If you had a choice, and not with your background, would you chose to be something other than a Guardian?

Rykerian: Never. I believe it is what I was born to be. It is very difficult to even think of my life away from the Guardians

Maghon: Other than our Earth cookies, is there anything else on Earth you love?

Rykerian: Pizza! With a bit of pepperoni on it. And chocolate ice cream.

Maghon: Is there anything you wouldn’t do for January?

Rykerian: Nothing at all. I would give her the world if she asked for it…I would even let her crush my hand if need be. *laughs*

Maghon: I do remember a statement pretty close to you saying that to her!! Will we get to see more of you in the future? 🙂

Rykerian: I’m not sure. You may have to ask my mate as she is keeping me quite busy these days. *wink*

Maghon: A little of this and that…

Boxers or briefs?

night or day?
Night…starry, of course

Favorite drink?
Hot cocoa or chocolate milk…are you seeing a pattern here?(Hint: chocolate)

Favorite smell? Though I think I already know this one 🙂
Anything citrus!

Do you have a favorite book
There are a few Vesturion classics I am very fond of, but January keeps telling me I need to read several of her favorite books such as Eden and Eden-West by Janelle Stalder and Sweet Blood of Mine by John Corwin.

Well, she has fantastic taste!! And she’s right of course! Is there anything you wanna tell us that we don’t already know?

Most people don’t see this in me, but I do have a keen sense of humor. It only comes out after you get to know me though. It would be a bit difficult not to have one since I did grow up in a home filled with five boisterous other children who showed no mercy on each other. *Shaking head* !

Don’t you just LOVE him!!! Thanks so much Rykerian for stopping by!! I tried my hardest not to drool too much!!

And now, I’d like to welcome January herself to my blog! WELCOME!!

January and the Dauraba

I walked into the family den and plopped onto one of the cushy chairs. I was alone as Rykerian and Rayn were with Rowan discussing political issues regarding the Xanthians. It was the first occasion I had to myself. I looked around the room, my gaze noticing some of the fine paintings on the walls and artifacts that dotted the shelves. I knotted my fingers, wondering if I’d ever be comfortable in such a rich environment.

Do not be so concerned about such things. They are only objects. The people here are kind and will care more for you than those things over there.

My eyed darted around the room, for I was sure I was alone.

Oh you are alone. There are no others here.

Then who was speaking to me? I rose to me feet, wondering if there were ghosts in here.

Calm down human. There are no spirits in here.

Sweet baby bunnies, I’m going insane. Then I heard a movement and out of the corner of my eye I saw a shadow. I turned my head to see a…creature…the most adorable creature I had ever seen in my life. It wasn’t quite a dog, but similar. It was about the size of a golden retriever with similar fur, but had the face of a giant bunny rabbit. It ambled over to me and rubbed itself against me.

Well, hello there. Not exactly what you were expecting am I?

I staggered backwards until the backs of my legs hit one of the sofas and I fell onto it. My hand grabbed my throat. What the heck was this thing?

Thing? I am no thing! I am special. My name is Ethella and I am a dauraba.

“A dauraba?”

Yes, a dauraba.

“What’s a dauraba?”

You are looking at one, silly!

“May I pet you?”

Of course!

I reached out my hand, slowly, and lightly touched my fingers to the top of it’s head. It had the softest fur I’d ever felt in my life. I wanted to run my hands through it all over and then rub my face against it.

Well, what are you waiting for?

Humph! I can hear your thoughts silly. Go ahead and do it! You know you want to. I won’t bite you for goodness sake.

That was the only invitation I needed. I dropped to my knees and rubbed my hands back and forth through its fur and put my face against its neck. I never had a pet growing up, although I had begged for one. This was wonderful. The it started to make a funny little noise, not quite a purr, but similar. It closed its eyes and rubbed against me.

Don’t forget my neck and behind my ears. I love my ears rubbed. And my belly! They always forget my belly. I love my belly scratched.

The thing plopped down and rolled on its back, exposing its belly, so I complied and the noises it started making had me giggling to no end. It sounded like an old man snoring! I finally had to stop I was laughing so hard.

Stop laughing at me and you must stop referring to me as “it.” My name is Ethella and I’m a girl!

I could almost feel her pouting.
“I’m sorry Ethella, but you’re funny!”

I am?

“Yes. And how can you communicate with me?”

I can communicate with everyone, not just you.

Oh dear. I thought about this for a minute. My thoughts would now be an open book. Would she share them with everyone?

How could you possibly think that, after you scratched my belly?

I am not allowed to betray confidences.

“Okay…that’s a good thing then.”

Of course that’s a good thing. I am a dauraba!

“Okay. Don’t get huffy. I didn’t mean to insult you or anything. I’ve never met a dauraba before so I didn’t know how special you were.”

You think I’m special?

“Of course you’re special! I’ve never met a pet before that could talk to me.”

I can’t talk silly.

“Not out loud you can’t but you can certainly communicate with me.”

Scratch my belly some more please.

I began to scratch her tummy and rub her head when I heard footsteps. I glanced up to see Rykerian standing in the doorway, smiling at me.

“I see you’ve me Ethella. Watch out for her. She’ll have you wrapped around her paw in no time at all.”

“Rykerian, why didn’t you tell me Vesturon had creatures that were telepathic?”

“What are you talking about January?”

“You know, Ethella and the way she talks to you.”

“No, I don’t know what you mean.”

I looked at him and then down at Ethella as she sat next to me and I swear that adorable fluff of fur had the audacity to wink at me.
