“Some people say they don’t care. I actually mean it.”
Mercy Green didn’t become this way overnight. Centuries of monotonous life have left her jaded and detached. Humans weren’t meant to live forever. But then again, she isn’t human. Adam is though, and his purity baffles her. How can he remain unpolluted in a world tarnished by corruption? It doesn’t matter. Her time in Birchwood Creek is coming to an end and she must prepare to relocate. That is, until she inexplicably wakes up in a pool of her own blood. The answer seems simple enough: leave immediately. But when an attempt is made on Adam’s life, a failed murder she inadvertently caused, she feels obligated to stay and protect him.
But then she’s attacked again.
And Adam begins to ask questions.
Victim to an unseen stalker, Mercy’s forced to seek help from Nick, an immortal teenager whose sudden appearance suspiciously coincides with her plunge into chaos. With her structured life unraveling and revelation of her immortality looming, Mercy must accept the truth: she’s being hunted. But why?
…And she thought immortality was boring.
So what happens when an immortal actually starts living like a human? Let’s just say it’s quite interesting! And how totally awesome that the main character is a major animal lover! 🙂 YAY to cool factors! This is a sweet but mystery filled paranormal romance. I really enjoyed trying to figure out who was who 🙂
Mercy is complicated. She’s an immortal, yet she is so against being one that she doesn’t even realize her potential powers. She’s kinda anti-social in a way, but that’s cool because she has her animals. And I actually feel pretty bad for her, as she’s been stuck on Adam for forever, and yet he’s had this other girlfriend. And when the girlfriend breaks Adam’s heart and takes off with his paintings, Mercy is willing to help him be a small criminal hahahaha. I do like Mercy’s dialogues. She made me laugh, and made me want to make sure I don’t live forever 😉
There’s plenty of guys to go around, but not all are for romantic purposes. Adam is the romantic piece. I do get Adam’s attractiveness, but sometimes I feel like if they don’t realize you’ve been there all this time, why should it count only when they need. Pfft, who am I to talk about love hahahaha. Nick is another immortal who helps Mercy understand her world and a little more about herself, and that not all immortals are bad, and his relationship with Mercy is awesome!
I really like how they author took some very awesome optimistic ways to look at life and put it in there. You have Mercy who is stuck alive forever, so she has a jaded outlook, where are Nick isn’t as bad, and Adam being human makes life seem so much more vivid and beautiful. This is always a good thing as I am usually told I have a bubbly personality. I also really enjoyed the author’s writing style.
This story has some very fun twists. The mystery of who is hunting the immortals and supernaturals is full of suspense, while the romance side makes it have a softer edge. I am definitely going with my paranormal romance fans will really enjoy this one, as well as some of the urban fantasy fans too. I am hoping this is a series because it had such an interesting take on immortals, and the bad guys *wink wink* and just an all around fun book to read! 🙂 I say 4.5 ANIMAL LOVING, LIFE FINDING PAWS! 🙂
About the Author:
Borrowed from her website: Michaela Debelius is an indie author whose novels include elements of science fiction, romance, and suspense. Originally from New England, she now lives in Arizona with her husband and two furry children.
A note from Michaela: “As a child, books were a form of escapism. No matter what troubles may have found me I was only a page turn away from a place where bad people got punished, good people were rewarded, and everything ended with a happily ever after. I believe there is nothing better than a book that engrosses you. It should be so titillating you’re thinking about it at work, relishing in the thought of getting home and snuggling into bed with a delicious three hundred pages of bliss. That is what I hope to offer you. Thank you for giving me that opportunity.” So slip into something comfortable, but don’t forget to leave a light on because this is heat that will give you the chills.

Lieutenant Noel Casey is taken aback by her newest military assignment. Her usual routine of vaccine development is interrupted when she’s assigned to analyze Killian, a genetically engineered soldier designed for exceptional strength and intelligence. She’s not accustomed to working with human subjects, especially a person created for warfare, and Killian’s indifference is making it difficult to see past his robotic demeanor.
When Noel is attacked outside Killian’s containment quarters, he is forced to intervene. The altruistic act instantly transforms their relationship, though neither will admit to the shift in sentiment. The predator is now the protector in Noel’s eyes, and she’s thrown off by her growing captivation.
As if her infatuation with a virtual stranger isn’t enough of a distraction, she begins having terrifying nightmares. Her cryptic dreams appear to harbor an elusive warning as she watches them materialize into existence, proving the nightly visions foretelling. She begins to suspect the military base is concealing far more than an experimental soldier, and she can’t shake the feeling Killian is the axis of the chaos. Noel must decide whether she’ll accept the unconvincing explanations offered by her peers, or reject her comfortable environment for an unimaginable truth. With her premonitions pointing towards a violent outcome and her irrational draw to Killian becoming impossible to ignore, she realizes the choice has already been made for her. Noel’s understanding of science is about to be shattered.
