The Infernal Detective Spotlight

Hello everyone! Today I have another spotlight and review for you, as well as an author interview. I love when I get to meet new authors and I especially love it when I love their books 🙂 Now let me show you the goodies! As always any of the covers you click will take you to their goodreads page if you’d like to learn more, or add to your “want to read” lists.

The Infernal Detective (Riga Hayworth, #4)

Murder. The undead. Irritating relatives.

When Riga Hayworth finds a dead body in the bedroom, it’s par for the course. When the corpse drives off with her fiancée… That’s a problem.

Riga knows dead. More intimately than she’d like. So when a murdered photographer walks away from her pre-wedding party, she believes there’s necromancy afoot. And when she discovers that several of her wedding guests are under the influence of dark magic, she’s certain. But how can she catch a killer and stop a necromancer when even her nearest and dearest are lying to her?

Marrying romance, mystery, and the metaphysical, The Infernal Detective is a fast-paced urban fantasy, where nothing is quite as it seems, and magic lies just beyond the veil.

“A high-voltage, cleverly-spun mystery that I couldn’t put down. Riga Hayworth is addictive.”

–          Diana Orgain, Best-selling author of The Maternal Instincts Mysteries

Book Trailer:

My Review:
I will start by saying I did not read any of the first three books, which normally is bad, but here it wasn’t bad. You may not get as much of the original world building and character backgrounds, and a few references from the earlier books, but other than that, I found it pretty smooth. It’s also quite a fun little mysterious ride 🙂 I happen to like supernatural mysteries and this is perfect for that category.

Riga is a detective of the supernatural variety. The book literally starts out at Riga’s engagement party. Her wedding is in a week, she’s got a whole bunch of super important people at this party, including her eccentric aunts, and when she goes to their room for a little break, there’s a dead guy. Her fiancé is smart and calls the police, instructs her to go get copies of their building’s entrance security cameras, and upon returning the dead guy and her fiancé are both gone. Lol And then she sees the dead guy and her fiancé WALKING AWAY! this is an excellent way to start out a book to make it begin with a bang. Dead guys walking around, black magic leaving traces, crazy aunts, mob bosses hitting on her, it’s a hilarious thrill ride!!

There’s some very lovable characters. Her aunts make me giggle. Riga is a well written character and I like Donovan, her fiancé, and the bad guys will swing you for a loop.

I now will be reading the first three books because there was such a fun, exciting, memorable ride! The plot was very entertaining, and had twists and completely action packed! I’m so glad the author emailed me for this one because I found another great book!! 4.5 WALKING DEAD, THRILLING PAWS!

Author Interview:

WELCOME!! First, tell me a little about your book and why you wanted to write this particular story….

The Infernal Detective is book four in the Riga Hayworth series. Though the books can all be read as standalones, Riga’s character develops in each of the books, and in this one, she’s on the verge of getting married. I wanted to do something lighter, and inspired by Arsenic and Old Lace, I had an idea of a trio of eccentric aunts who hide a magical secret. This is, I think, the funniest book in the series.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated or did you always just know?

It started when I was a kid. Two things happened. First, I was an early reader, and when I was only five I wanted to be a girl detective like Nancy Drew. But by the time I was six I’d figured out that wasn’t a viable career. Then I won a prize in a first grade writing contest and decided the next best thing was writing mystery novels.

What inspired you to write your first book and what was it?

My first book was a cozy mystery about a woman who ran a company that managed the plants in office buildings. Good characters, but badly written. That was a while back and I can’t remember the inspiration, but I was really into cozies at the time, and I knew a bit about horticulture.

Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

Life is weird. And a lot of it finds its way into the books, but modified so as not to be a direct rip-off of real life. For example, I was in Kauai last year and the newspaper was reporting on a series of murders of seals. I’m now working on the fifth Riga Hayworth, set in Kauai, and seal murders are a part of the mystery.

Who do you look up to as a writer?

Ian Rankin. I love his Inspector Rebus series.

What book are you reading now? Or what genre? My followers love author’s opinions!

My favorite new series (to me) is the Samantha Moon vampire mysteries by J.R. Rain. Great writing, strong and oddly realistic (for a vampire) female protagonist, and great concept: mother and FBI agent turned vampire, who’s “condition” forces her to become a P.I.

Who designed the cover? And do you help with them?

Becky Scheel of Atlanta, GA designed my cover. I’ll usually send her some imagery ideas, and then she’ll develop a cover and then we’ll get on the phone and talk about tweaks. She’s a wonderful and very patient designer.

Did you learn anything from writing your books and what was it?

Each of the Riga Hayworth books explores a different “style” or modality of magic, so I get to do a lot of occult research. The Infernal Detective looks at necromancy, which is something I really only knew about from the movies and TV. But it’s quite ancient, and initially based on divination through conversation with the spirits.

If you could be one of your characters, who would you choose?

I admire Riga a lot. She’s very self-confident and direct, and it doesn’t hurt that she’s the spitting image of WWII pinup girl, Rita Hayworth.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Book Trailer:

Book Description:

She has never feared the walking dead. It’s the power required to reanimate the dead that startles her, seduces her. The power that dwells inside her…and is growing.

For Professor Ruby Montagne, being a necromancer has brought her nothing but heartache, and she walked away from that part of her life long ago. However, her quiet existence in San Francisco is shattered when she stumbles upon the body of a slain witch, and the supernatural community insists she transform him into a revenant to track the killer. But his murder was just the beginning, and Ruby soon realizes that the stakes are higher than anyone can imagine—and that revenants have nasty minds of their own.

Now demonic creatures have escaped into the human world, and zombies once again walk the streets. For humanity’s sake, Ruby forms an unlikely alliance with a witch, a zombie, and Ewan March, a demon warrior who sets her senses on fire.

She’s always distrusted demons and Ewan is no exception, but circumstances push them closer together, and Ruby not only finds it harder to resist him, she isn’t sure she even wants to. But she suspects his job of patrolling the portal separating humans and demons conceals a dark and deadly past that may consume them both.

With events spiraling out of control, Ruby unravels a plot that not only threatens the human and demon realms, but puts Ruby’s very soul in jeopardy. Because when the dead walk, no one is safe. Especially Ruby.

Ewan waved me over to an empty expanse of the porch circled with candles of various shapes and colors, casting an ominous glow that barely chased off the shadows skulking around the room. I walked over, steering clear of the screen.

“Will this do?” he asked.

I nodded. “Where’s Adam’s body?”

“In the basement. Do you want it brought up now?”

“No.” Achieve inner calm while peeking at the dead body, worried it’ll pop up and jump on me? Not likely.

“All right then, I’ll leave you alone.” He didn’t move. The lines around his mouth softened. “I want to apologize for last night. I wasn’t acting very gentlemanly.”

“Gentlemanly?” I smiled. The tension eased from my shoulders. “I’d never use gentleman in the same breath as demon.”

“Now I’m offended.” The crinkle of his eyes told me the opposite. “We demons are quite chivalrous.”

“Chivalrous? I suppose you have a white horse hidden away somewhere?”

He’d somehow moved closer during our exchange and grazed my cheek with his finger. “White horse,” he whispered close to my ear, “boring.”

He lowered his lips to mine but stopped short of touching them, tracing my back with his hand, gliding it up my neck to wrap his fingers in my hair. Our bodies were close but not touching; only our breaths met in a hot exchange. He gazed at my lips before possessing them with his own.

I swayed and caught his shoulders to steady myself. I moaned at the electric shock searing a path from my lips to my core. Feeling, tasting him was better than I ever allowed myself to imagine.

Ewan consumed me.

I wasn’t ready to be consumed.

Rise of the Magi Blog Tour w Giveaway

Rise of the Magi

So, in my year and a half of blogging, I have found some very magnificent books that I wouldn’t have normally heard of.  This series being one of them. Until I signed up as a reviewer for J.Taylor Publishing, I hadn’t heard of most of the authors (PS THANKS JA Belfield for making me stalk you enough to find these!!) and I AM SO GLAD I did! This trilogy has been huge, now that I know about it. And with the final installment, even though I hadn’t read the first two, I had to jump on the blog tour to spread the love. No worries, I definitely can wait to talk about them. Heh, I had a moment, you see right after I was accepted to review for J.Taylor, this was one of the first books I was sent. And…. I didn’t know anything about it, until I started reading it and figured out that it’s not the first book in the series. Even reading into the first several chapters, I knew I needed to get my hands on books one and two. Alright so now that you know these little goodies, there’s been enough blabber from me, let’s get to the fun stuff!!!! CONGRATS to Ms Adams, as I have a feeling this book and series is going to be spectacular!! 🙂

In a battle of wills, who is strongest? The one who hates or the one who loves?

In a test of faith, who will fight the hardest? The one who has everything to lose or the one who believes only in herself?

For Lila Gray, the answer is both. For the Magi, the questions are pointless since they can’t lose, and they’ve been waiting since before Lila’s birth for this one moment. Lila only needs to find them to understand her entire purpose in life. This time, though, instead of protecting her people, Lila may be leading them all, including her unborn child and the man she loves, to their deaths — and not by accident.

In the ultimate trial of heart and soul, and the conclusion to the Lila Gray series, Lila will learn that the greatest weapon of war is herself, with one ultimate unknown. For which side will she fight?

Excerpt – Chapter 1

I choked on the black fear unfurling in my soul, brought on by what would come, what always assaulted me the moment I slipped into unconsciousness. It was stupid to think I could run from it for a third night, but shreds of hope were all that had kept me sane. Primal, cold and so dark it blotted out my Light.

Sleep, more terrifying than anything I’d faced yet, claimed me again.

Standing on the balcony of the new fae castle, I gazed over winding rows of ancient shifter houses, each quiet and seemingly content in slumber, in a night that wasn’t dark. Dark and light all at once—a perfect balance, as if the world hadn’t yet decided which side would win, until the red clouds rolled and curled across the sky like blood spilled into water. Flames, intelligent and ravenous, spread from the east, ready to consume everything and everyone until nothing but ash remained. Heat licked at my skin, growing hotter. Knowing it was only a dream didn’t keep sweat from pearling along my face and neck or the blue streak of profanity from escaping to color the air. Heart thundering, I gripped the railing while I stared at the coming storm, brain frozen with the puzzle I hadn’t yet solved.

What are you trying to tell me? What am I missing?

From below, shrieks invaded my ears, thundering across the land until they rose into a deafening clatter of sound. The houses came alive with light, moaning as fae spilled into the cobblestone streets and stared skyward before scattering, each filled with agony and despair deep enough there would be no escape from it. Dying. They were dying. My own scream built in my throat, to tell them I would fix it somehow, that I would save them, but it couldn’t find an escape. Nor would my body obey my commands to move, to help them. To do something. Anything.

The scene changed as it always did. I stared down from far above, my limbs turned to torches of white fire. A globe of light around me cast a white wash over the city, over the fae who still ran in every direction.

From me.

I am the storm.

Wings pounding against the wind reached me a moment before a giant snowy owl arrived to hover before me, those golden eyes shining with rage and fear, both inducing immense relief that Liam had come and blinding horror with some distant knowledge that he should have run, too.

My scream pierced the silence as a wail let loose from his beak.

No. No!

“Wake up, Lila. Please, wake up!”

Warmth on my arm jerked me awake.

Damn near hyperventilating, I scrambled out of bed and landed on my hands and knees on the hardwood without a stitch of clothing on, unsure if the room spun or if I was just dizzy. When Liam approached, his eyes haunted and glassy, a chilled realization hit me and stalled my breath until my lungs ached with need. What if the storm hadn’t been a dream?

Jocelyn Adams grew up on a cattle farm in Lakefield and has remained a resident of Southern Ontario her entire life, most recently in Muskoka. She has worked as a computer geek, a stable hand, a secretary, and spent most of her childhood buried up to the waist in an old car or tractor engine with her mechanically inclined dad. But mostly, she’s a dreamer with a vivid imagination and a love for fantasy (and a closet romantic — shhh!). When she isn’t shooting her compound bow in competition or writing, she hangs out with her husband and young daughter at their little house in the woods.

My Review:

I will state that I was bad and read a good portion into this book before I figured out that I really needed to read the whole trilogy for it to become as awesome as it was meant to be. 🙂 Now, THIS is one of the most amazing world building creations I’ve ever read. This are just amazing. I have decided that though things are scary and a little out of control, I’d very much like to take a long vacation to visit there 🙂 The characters are fantastic, there’s not one who won’t leave an imprint on your heart… Hell, even the creeptastic Magi are pretty awesome. The author needs her own zip code or something because she really is a one-of-a-kind writer. I haven’t read anyone who writes in her styles.

Lila is quite an interesting creature. She has changed so much in the series, each book growing more and more lovable. Also more mature and responsible. Plus, having Liam around is filling her with awesome 🙂 I am going to go with fiesty, spunk as her personality, and though she matured, she didn’t lose herself. She’s pretty kick ass as far as lead female roles go. She’s gone through quite some ordeals throughout the series, and I am glad to see her ending be a good one.

There are plenty of familiar characters as well as new ones floating around. There’s several who have grabbed a little piece of my heart throughout. I am still so amazed as the world building. It was just flawless, like watching a movie or having a dream, and feeling like you could be there. The plots and twists and action that occurs is pretty mind blowing. It’s very well done, and never gives you the feeling that there was anything missing. I especially love that things played out like they should have… but that’s just my opinion! 🙂 LOL You are going to have to read it to see if you agree with that opinion! I am definitely a fan forever and I am a little sad that it’s over, even though I read the series in just a few days LOL! 5 SCENERIFIC CREEPTASTIC PAWS!!! Can I also add AMAZING to that!!

Book Description:

Tessa Von Hellengaard is a real witch. Magical spells aside, she’s snarky and selfish, and the other witches in her silent spell coven are fed up with her. Their plan to reform Tessa involves taking away her magic, saddling her with one hundred extra pounds, and sending her to a weight loss spa.

For good measure they call in Liam Kennedy, a charming and sexy fairy godfather, to teach her some manners. Desperate to regain her magic and determined to shed the weight, Tessa soon realizes that protecting her heart from Liam will prove to be her greatest challenge.

“Hey, lady, anyone ever tell you you’re a real witch?”

“More times than you can imagine.” Contessa Von Hellengaard, Tessa to her few friends and many enemies alike, eyed the obstinate construction worker who blocked the path of her sleek black Mercedes.

She wondered how this mere mortal would like being turned into a fluffy skunk. Her fingers itched to work their magic, but she kept them gripped on the steering wheel. She was already in enough trouble with the Upper Hallows Witch Council without casting what they would consider another unnecessary spell. If she was detained any longer she’d be late for her meeting with said council. Tessa knew they were already ticked off enough without her adding another infraction to their precious list.

She leaned out the window. “Remove your overfed self from my way immediately. I need to use this road and I don’t have time for your ridiculous detour.”

“Guess you should’ve used your broomstick then because there ain’t no way I’m letting your car get through here.” He crossed his beefy arms over his chest.

He seemed altogether too amused with his juvenile humor for Tessa’s liking. Broomstick indeed. She revved the motor to let him know she meant business.

He couldn’t say he hadn’t been warned.

She pushed up her black lace sleeves and pointed to the orange and white barricade. “Last warning. Remove yourself and that thing from my way.”

He laughed at her. Laughed. At her.

She narrowed her eyes. This sorry excuse for a government employee was not going to make her late for her meeting. Removing him from her path, she decided, was a very necessary act indeed. She could make the council members understand. But only if she got there on time.

With the tip of her red lacquered fingernail she traced a circle in her palm, silently reciting the spell that would get her what she wanted. A small, satisfied smile tugged at her lips as the man in front of her began to levitate. She stroked her index finger sideways to help direct his ascension. His shocked expression and angry torrent of curse words bothered her not at all. He continued to fuss and kick even after he was hooked on to the high crane by the back of his overalls. At over forty feet above the ground she could barely make out his foul words.

Tessa flicked her finger across her palm with one last quick swipe and waited while the barricade went flying to the side of the road and crashed on a pile of rocks.

She waved farewell to the construction worker as she slipped her Mercedes into drive. The fool would be wise to quit struggling or he’d soon have a painful wedgie.

Silly mortal. He had no reason to panic. Someone would be along to get him down. Eventually.

Book Trailer

It happens practically every night. My pleasant dreams take on a life of their own, morphing into terrifying nightmares. They are the tsunamis of the dream ocean, spinning me in their churning tides before thrusting me awake, whereupon I find myself drenched in a pool of sweat, and gasping for air. Abandoning my worry isn’t an option since a demonic element is the driving force behind them. It sounds crazy, but even as a child, a special darkness visited me in my dreams. Is it a warning? Or a threat? Your guess is as good as mine.

They always began the exact same way – I’m being hurled into a pitch-black hole of nothingness. I open my sleepy eyes, allowing them time to adjust. Isolation surrounds me, reminding me how unprepared I am for this place. A dim, orange light cuts through the dark abyss like a blade. I squint, realizing it’s much further than it appears. I attempt to move my feet, but they stubbornly refuse. I try a second time, and manage to overcome the terror that is binding them. One step becomes two and I find myself walking at a cautious pace, listening for the faintest sound. I haven’t the slightest idea where I am, which makes me suspicious of everything. My nose wrinkles as I walk through a large pocket of air that reeks with an overpowering odor of burnt hair. I swing and wave my hands, hoping to break up the stench, but to no avail. What could be the source of such a rank smell? I’m not sure I want to know the answer. I quickly push the thought away. Curiosity can be dangerous when it comes between reality and panic.

I tread delicately, hoping no one hears me. I don’t think I’m alone, and I find some comfort in the darkness. Whatever is with me is out of my sight, and therefore, out of my mind. I never thought I would find a cliché so helpful to me until now. I wrap my thoughts around it, mustering up the courage to carry on. The orange light grows, compelling me to pick up my pace. I glance at my surroundings, unsure of what I might find. The curved, dank walls and concrete blocks beneath my feet are bare, but fortunately, no revolting creatures dangle from the ceiling or slither past my feet, although I am thinking of them! Where the hell am I? Dreams have a funny way of camouflaging life’s problems, but this is ridiculous!

A glint of light from the ashen wall catches my eye. I step closer to it, noticing how the curved cobbles gently mold my feet to their shapes. Small, rectangular stones that suggest their age goes well beyond the medieval era are arrayed in front of me. A dense tackiness catches the small granules of little dust motes that are reflected by the light here. Some kind of liquid begins to seep from one of the cracks in the stones, and I lower my head to inspect it. The crimson liquid slides sluggishly, like a snail, towards the ground. Leaning closer, I realize I’m staring at blood, and I gasp, jumping backwards. My heart thuds loudly in my chest as my adrenaline speeds through my veins like a racecar. My eyes skip around, noticing thousands of little red capillaries materializing all over the wall. An overwhelming paranoia that the tunnel will cave in torments my mind. I turn and dash towards the light, fueled by my distress. My lungs scream for air as I push myself further and faster than ever.

The orange light surrounds a large opening. Skidding to a stop, I barely avoid falling over the ledge at the cave’s entrance. I stare out at a fiery, scarlet landscape that appears infinite, and sends me a menacing warning. I lean forward when a wall of intense heat slugs me in the face, forcing me backwards a few inches. The air is dense, and it’s hard to catch my breath. Sweat beads on my brow, evaporating before I can wipe it away. I scan the ravaged scenery, watching pillars of fire erupt from the ground before disappearing into the onyx sky, rimmed in red. A chain of mountains with jagged cliffs, emerge straight up from the bloodshot dirt. Floating objects I don’t wish to know about, travel in an orbit, weaving in and out through the rough terrain. I’m in a completely different world. My terror lingers, refusing to go away. A raging river of lava slices through the valley, determined to leave its own mark in the middle of this inferno. I stroll down a steep trail that leads directly to the unusual river. I stop long before reaching its banks, and gradually inch my way closer. My eyes drift over to the whirling mass of disturbing beauty. Deep shades of red and orange mesh with each other, creating a horrid kaleidoscope of angry colors. Flashes of distorted images of my family and friends bob in and out of the blazing lava. I watch in horror as the greedy river of fire consumes them without remorse. Despite my attempts to reach in, my hand snaps back after feeling the agonizing heat. I step backwards, staring in numb bewilderment. I know I’m dreaming, but it doesn’t lessen my anxiety. My back slams into something solid and unyielding. Long, crooked fingers wrap around the tops of my tiny shoulders like spiders. Suffering and emptiness engulf me. My heart pounds like a hammer as my limbs melt into rubber. The hands squeeze me hard, sending excruciating pain throughout my entire back. The snapping of my shoulders, cracking like glass, shatters the unbearable stillness.

My Review:

What if I said I am soooo mad!!! Wanna know why…. BECAUSE I HAVE TO WAIT! This book was a refreshing, fun, adventurous read, and just when I was all serious, it’s the end. LOL Yeah I really liked this one. I know it’s going to be a series, because I will seriously put a cajun hurtin’ on someone if they don’t gimme the rest soon. 🙂 LOL OK, now that I’ve gotten that part out, let’s talk goodies. First, this story starts out with a normal girl. She isn’t anything special, she owns a cool coffee shop in Georgia, she has some pretty cool friends- who made me giggle lots- she has a slightly crazy and unhinged family, but they are sweet… And then one day she starts getting these weird messages that someone is coming for her. AND THEN her world literally spins painfully out of control.

Anna is complicated. I really liked her character, except I swear to God, if she doesn’t get smart and stop making the most STUPID decisions ever, I am going to kick her… yeah ok. LOL First, I like her because she has a normal every day life. She’s insecure from the last bad news dude, but she’s doing her thing with her coffee shop, and she has a fun girl friend who keeps her upbeat, and my favorite is her gay bartending friend who literally made the story for me. I like that she does grow as a character… except… seriously, when people are out to get you, and the person trying to protect you say “stay here”… DO NOT go running off by yourself… like ten times. HAHAHAHA This of course causes lots of actions scenes to come about, but I totally wanted to punch her in the face. She talks about not being the stupid girl in the horror movies she watches, and then she does it. And yet, I can’t find it in myself to dislike her. She’s grown on me, and she’s an interesting character, and I really want her to make it out of her predicament. 🙂

Valen and Roman are HAWT!!! H-O-TTTTTTT!!! Seriously. I am of course all Team Valen- I mean come on, he’s a werewolf so of course I chose him. BUT, Roman is seriously got a few of my hairs kinked. He’s hot in a totally different way. Valen is the sweet, kind, over protective WOLF, who of course goes hot and cold and I wanna beat him up too. LOL Then Roman is Mr Serious face, who is all about learning the hard way, but dude is like walking Man Candy! GO TEAM VALEN…. BUT I really hope Team Roman gets a good girl 🙂 Maybe Kristi or Janie 🙂

Then there’s Micah…. Soooo, you know the saying “The devil in the church hat”…. Dude is smoking hot, seriously powerful, and TOTALLY EVIL CRAY CRAY!!! And it only gets worse from there. I have a feeling Lucifer is going to make an appearance soon and I totally can’t wait to see how that’s gunna play out. 🙂 Anyways, the plot- major interesting. I wasn’t expecting that last little twist. And seriously, that ending, you are totally killing me. Well placed cliff hanger. I need some hints soon though. I am very intrigued with how the author writes. It’s easy which makes the flow of the book so much better. I am seriously excited for book two to come out, even if I’m also impatient. I recommend this to anyone who likes paranormals and urban fantasy. It’s got almost everything you could want! 5 WOLFISHLY, MAGICALLY DELICIOUS!!!

Reader reviews on Vampire Elite:

You’ve managed to restore my hope in the future of vampire books …

… a fascinating read and definitely a book for anyone who loves fantasy, romance and of course vampires.

… a spellbinding novel of action, suspense, romance, and conscience …  character development is superb … the type of book that will make you read all day until you get to the end! It is deliciously addictive!

Excerpt 1 (Simone at the Hunter’s auction)

As the auctioneer spoke, two Sekhmi in eveningwear—a male carrying an elegant dagger and a female a silver tray covered with glass vials—approached the Amiti girl.

“She’s barely eighteen, ladies and gentlemen. That’s a good three years younger than the youngest bloodstock you’ll usually come across. Look at her; she’s stunning, simply stunning, and as you can see, we’ve kept her well conditioned, in excellent health.”

The auctioneer paused as the male Hunter grasped the Amiti’s hand and held it above the tray. The girl showed no resistance, her only display of anxiety the butterfly fluttering of her thick eyelashes. He raised his other hand, and the dagger flashed in the light as with a swift motion he slit the Amiti’s palm. The dark, intoxicating scent of fresh blood filled the room as it poured into the vials.

Simone’s gums began to itch and burn, and she covered her mouth with her hand so no one would see her fangs punching down. It was considered terribly rude to expose one’s fangs in public, even among other vampires. But she needn’t have worried; everyone’s attention was riveted to the stage and the blood flowing from the girl’s wound. The room vibrated with bloodlust and sexual arousal.

The female Sekhmi approached Simone’s table, offering the Royal Pride the first of the blood samples. Knowing that all eyes were on her, Simone forced herself not to hesitate and took a small sip—and was immediately flooded with euphoria.

“For this magnificent specimen, we open the bidding at ten million U.S. dollars,” announced the auctioneer.

My Review:

This is a very unique type of vapire story, as it’s not based on your normal vamper background, but based on an Egyptian myth and the birth of two immortal creatures. These creatures are called Sekhmet- what you would know as today’s vampire- and Amiti-the blood donors, well even if that is a very simple term for it, as well as almost like a reinfield but not quite. However, these vampers are not so nice, they are all about that juicy hot red stuff, and it doesn’t have to always be a polite form of getting it. The Amiti are there to help enforce that the Sekhmet don’t go snacking on humans.

Right now, in modern times, things are so good. The vampires are in control and dead set on making sure their entire existence revolves around blood and power. Arianna is your main character who is to become queen of the Amiti, and trust me, her life has not be a piece of cake-sometimes being royalty sucks. It seems like everyone is out to get her, using her in some terrible ways, as well as literally being a snack for the vampires. She’s definitely got a lot on her plate.

The other really interesting thing about this book, is that it’s written from several character’s POVs. You can’t miss out on the plot schemes, or who and what each chartacter is from the beginning. It made for an interesting read. There’s action, and betrayal-lots of betrayal- and mystery, and loads of passion (PS I would keep this one for the adults). It made for quite a quick read. It was fun, because it’s like looking at a tornado about to touch down- full of mayhem and chaos, but beautiful in its own way.  Such a fun ride! 4 Spectacular PAWS!!

Book Description:

This is a fiction story, with factually reported paranormal events, written by an established, credible, science and technology writer for well-known publications.

I think you’ll find the story has in interesting world to immerse yourself in without losing an edge in reality that sets it apart. While the book has paranormal elements, it is not a typical, “drippy” vampire romance. Hath no Fury is about REAL magic. While the storyline is a fictional, any paranormal elements are actually based on real events personally observed in research or relayed by very credible witnesses.

Set in the 1970’s, Mark and Amy, the central characters of the story, live a life of discovery and wonder amidst a secret world of magic practitioners. As they mature, they discover their own magic and a new facet to their friendship. Just as they turn over a new page in their relationship, their worlds are suddenly rocketed out of control by a destiny and a source of evil that has been waiting patiently for a generation.

My Review:

I am impressed with the amount of research that I think went into this book. I can usually tell when an author puts a significant amount of time into their stories with their research and backgrounds. This one is exceptionally good.  Plus, just think if you could take a supernatural fiction book and turn it into nonfiction. That’s how this is. A lot of this book is based on real life, so it feels like real life, which is what made it so believable. I really wasn’t expecting it to be that good, and believable. I usually read fantasy for exactly that, fantasy- escape from real life. Maybe that’s why I liked this one so much. It gave me both worlds. 🙂

The story is about Mark and Amy, who are reunited in college, and were once neighbors and best friends. The story focuses more on their friendship, and past relationship, more than it does romance, but it was done just right. I actually liked both characters and what each of their individual personalities brought to the story.

I liked the background of the Wicca. Being raised in a different culture and/or religious time period is always hard to accomplish, but this one is excellent. The beginning which does have a lot of focus on background info may be a bit slow for some, but I found it interesting. And then by the middle you’re into the action and you won’t be able to put it down. This is also not one of the more “softer” sides of the story. There are some complicated and dark materials, and situations, but I really think that it made the story worth while. I am very impressed and a fan!!! 4.5 MAGICKAL PAWS!!

The Story Behind the Story

Hal Rappaport

There is a romantic and heart wrenching story arc thread being woven throughout. It will become more and more apparent in the next books. While I hope it will entertain, there are a few deeper themes that I wanted to express.

First, although the central character, Mark is male, the real strength comes from the women around him.  I wanted to demonstrate balances.  The title, “The Lesson of Three” comes from the Wiccan Rede (pronounced “reed”).  It’s part of an understanding that any witch or magick practitioner should understand.  Any energy you put out in the universe (magickal or otherwise) will come back to you times three.  Similar to Karma, with its balance, the Wiccan and Pagan beliefs are just multiplied by three.   It still comes out to be a balance, so it doesn’t strictly conflict with Karma, just that it shows it’s results with “broader strokes.”

I also wanted to highlight that all of our religions and magickal practices have much more in common than they have differences.  We need to celebrate what we have in common and share our differences, not fight over them.

About the Author:

I currently live in New Jersey, in a small town just north of Princeton.  I grew up in Philadelphia.  I guess I’ve been writing stories since I was about 11 or 12.  I loved the idea of being able to transport someone to another place, or to create my own.

I’ve always been into technology.  I’ve worked in the field for almost 25 years.  I wrote for the Syfy Channel’s technology site, DVICE and several of my articles were picked up by NBC (NBC Universal owns the Syfy Channel).  I have regular articles that are science fiction inspired, but about REAL technology.  It’s been my passion to incorporate something real from fiction. In the case of my book, it’s incorporating something real INTO the fiction.

Before any of the Syfy channel stuff, way back in the early days before Facebook and before Blogs, I created a web site for Horror themes called,  It’s still in existence in its very primitive form.

Anyway, I decided to write an article for my own site about one of the scariest places I had ever been.  It was a haunted attraction that had existed in the 1970’s and 80’s.  It was called, Brigantine Castle.  It was gigantic.  It was five stories tall with over 80 live actors.  Through the early search facilities of the web, I found a few of the original cast and got them together using a yahoo group (They still use it).

It gave me a unique opportunity to interview them and to write some great stuff about the place, with a lot of their pictures and even some sound recordings.

The editor of Haunted Attractions magazine read my web site and asked me to write one for him.  It was my first professional writing.  I’ve written a few more articles for Haunted Attractions Magazine since then, along with a few other industry publications.

Now it’s up to Lyla Stormbringer to find the Star and the thief. before Mallory finds itself at war.

Author Interview:

First, tell me a little about your book ….

The entire Hero’s Sword series is about becoming comfortable in your own skin. I don’t want to call it a “coming of age” because that has some connotations (for me) that just don’t apply here. In this particular book, it’s Jaycee’s second trip to Mallory. She kind of knows what’s going on. But whereas the first book she had to prove herself, this time it’s expected that she’s going to solve the problem and avert war. She’s also going to find out a little more about this shadowy “bad guy” trying to disrupt the world of the game – the “Empire” – and she’s going to find out a little more about herself, too. Things that will hopefully translate to her non-digital life.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated or did you always just know?

Absolutely. I was kind of like Jaycee when I was 13. Except I didn’t play video games; those were just gaining popularity in the mid-80s. Instead, I read – a lot. I escaped into those fictional worlds. And eventually, I thought, “If I could create my own world, this is what it would be like.”

What inspired you to write your first book and what was it?

Oh, it was awful! LOL Again, I was 13. I was not popular. My best friend was a talented artist and we collaborated on sort of what would now be called “urban fantasy,” about a girl who finds out she has magical powers and goes to a fantasy world to reclaim her family’s throne. And of course she’s pretty, smart, tough, witty, and good with guys. Which was totally the opposite of what we were at the time, but then again, that was the point.

Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

Yes and no. I mean, I was 13. I have a daughter who is now 13. And there are a lot of things that are just common to that age, at least thematically. I think most, of not all, kids in middle school are trying to decide who they are and where they fit. And in that way, yeah, Jaycee’s story is based on what I experienced and what I see my daughter going through. But the specifics are not drawn from real life. That is, neither of us are gamers battling evil cheerleaders.

How do you chose when/which characters die in your books?

So far, nobody has died in Hero’s Sword. Because of the target age group, 8-12, I’m not sure anybody will die – although there has to be a threat of danger/death there to keep the story going. But if I were to kill someone, it wouldn’t be casual/throwaway. The death would have to move the story forward somehow, or move Jaycee’s personal character arc forward. I wouldn’t want to hit too close to home so she’s emotionally devastated, but it would have to be close enough that she’d feel emotionally charged up enough to do something about it – either justice or finding the responsible party or something.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

In middle-grade? Not that I’ve stumbled across. Because my “to-be-read” pile is always falling over, I’m forever “discovering” authors who have been around for a while. I can say I’m really looking forward to the fall release of Rick Riordan’s latest Hero’s of Olympus book, House of Hades. I also read a fair amount of mysteries/crime fiction, and I’m really enjoying the DIY series from Berkeley by Jennie Bentley – but that’s not exactly new.

Who do you look up to as a writer?

Oh wow, um, I hope I can create worlds and characters like JK Rowling. And I’d love to plot like her too. Harry Potter was just such an amazing accomplishment on both points. Of course, I’d never dream of being in her league, but she’s definitely the gold standard for me when it comes to the middle-grade/young adult fantasy genre.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your book?

I don’t think so. I’ve only published two books in the series (third is in final draft), but I’m pretty happy with it so far. What I’ve written is making me change some of my future plans, though.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Sounding like a real 13-year old. Fortunately, I have an expert to talk to in that regard. And since this is expected to be a relatively long series arc (up to 12 books), finding new and exciting plots – and tying the whole thing together – is going to be a challenge in and of itself. I mostly know where I’m going, but characters have a way of surprising you.

What book are you reading now? Or what genre?

I literally just finished Stephen Chbosky’s Perks of Being a Wallflower. Still processing that one before I pick up something new.

Who designed the cover? And do you help with them?

My cover artist was a woman named Jen Domani. I don’t help design covers – I’m so not an artist – but I do get substantial opportunity to provide feedback and approve them, which is nice.

Did you learn anything from writing your books and what was it?

It’s been over 25 years since I was in 8th grade and nothing has changed about social dynamics. Well, some of the details – there were no iPhones in the mid-80s –  but that’s it. And I find that both comforting and depressing.

If you could be one of your characters, who would you chose?

I’d probably be Roger. He’s the guide/mentor, the one who is helping Jaycee on her personal journey. Having passed through the middle-school gauntlet already, that’s where I see myself as a parent and an author. “Been there, done that, got the t-shirt,” now I’m trying to pass on those lessons.

Are there any books you think some of us should read, just because?

Oh, tons of them! LOL But you probably want me to pick one, so I’ll say To Kill a Mockingbird. It’s one classic that has truly stood the test of time, at least in my opinion.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

You might be going through some tough times, right now. Your body is changing, school is challenging, and you’re just trying to fit in, whatever that means to you. You might think it’s useless. But hang in there. If you’re one of the kids on the edge, resist the temptation to do what’s “cool” just to fit in. It really does get better. You’ll find those people who like and appreciate you for the unique, amazing person that you are – so don’t ever give up what makes you that way.
