Karen Aminadra is an English author who can usually be found with her head in the clouds and muttering inanely to herself.  She mostly resides in her writing cave, and is occasionally allowed to come out to eat.  Her love of reading, writing short stories and her childhood imaginary world led quite naturally to writing novels.  Encouraged to read by her bookworm father and grandmother and by  winning a writing competition in just her first year of secondary school, she was spurred on, and she has been writing stories ever since.  Her love of mystery and plot twists that she put into that first story continues today.  She has travelled to and lived in many countries, not just in her imagination, and has gained an insight into people’s characters that shines through in her work.  Today, with her feet firmly back in England, she travels the world, the universe and in time through her imagination and her novels.

Book Description:

Help ghosts, stop a thief, and try not to die…

Necromancer Selene Vanream helps ghosts settle their affairs so they can move on. But when breaking the rules gets her in trouble, she’s bumped down to tracking ghosts trying to avoid the afterlife. Ghosts like Ethan Lance, who claims he was kicked out of his body when someone else jumped in. Which might be plausible—if such a thing were possible. And if Micah, Selene’s partner, didn’t pull her into an investigation of brutal murders that lead directly back to Ethan.

But when the whole mess puts Selene’s life in danger, she suddenly has very personal reasons to get Ethan’s body back. Between her uncomfortable relationship with Micah, and problems with her boss, Selene learns just how much trouble it can be when you don’t follow the rules

Short Excerpt:

I was in a strip club trying to help a ghost get laid, which was challenging, but not impossible. It was just extremely taxing on the necromancer extraordinaire (me) who had to channel energy into the ghost to make her corporeal enough to entice one of the stripper boys. Technically what I was doing was illegal, but it was my job to help ghosts settle their affairs so they could move on to eternally ever after, and Julia’s unfinished business was that she’d died a virgin. I’d made it as easy as I could for her by starting at a strip club; if she couldn’t get some here, I wasn’t sure how much lower I could scrape the barrel.

Julia’s prolonged virginity was an enigma to me, even though she told me that she’d been waiting for her soul mate. I just didn’t understand why that meant she couldn’t hit up a bar, get drunk, and have a fun, regret-filled weekend that included the walk of shame. At least she’d have been in better shape once soul mate came around.

“What do you think about him?” I asked, pointing to one of the three oiled up men who were gyrating for the benefit of all the screaming women. He had blond hair and green eyes, and wasn’t overly muscular. Julia looked at him then quickly looked away. I took that as a sign of approval.

“I think this was a bad idea,” she stammered.

“This was a fantastic idea,” I said. “And it will work, don’t worry.”

“No, I mean, I don’t think I can do this. I waited my whole life for my soul mate and now you want me to just—” she stole another quick look at the stripper, “I don’t think I can do this with some random…stripper man. It’s so indecent.”

I rolled my eyes. “Julia, you’re a ghost; you no longer have the option of being discerning. And if you don’t wrap up what’s keeping you around, you run the risk of turning into a monster. Then it’s an even bigger pain in the ass to get rid of you. So let’s call our efforts here at Bump and Moan choice A, and murderous monster choice B. Which choice would you like to make?”

“A,” Julia said, but she didn’t sound happy about it. I smiled, and grabbed a couple drinks off the tray of a passing waitress. I set them down in front of Julia.

“Drink,” I said. “This will help.”

“I’m a ghost,” she said. “I thought I was unable to eat or drink.”

“You can feel the effects of the alcohol since you’ll be working off my energy, so drink up. I’ve pegged you as a light weight so I think two drinks will be enough.”

“But how is this supposed to help?” she asked, frowning.

“Because its job is to help,” I said.

My Review:

When you start a book out with the sentence, ” I was in a strip club trying to help a ghost get laid, which was challenging, but not impossible.” I just know it’s going to be a wild ride. HAHAHAHA I mean seriously. This was definitely a new take on what necromancers can do. There are different types, and different levels of powers. With some seriously crazy things going on, and a twist that’ll have your head spinning, it was definitely a great read!

Selene is your main character, who happens to be a necromancer. She is cool with this. She pretty much embraces everything about herself. Her powers, her looks, her sex appeal, her attitude, her rebellious break the rules outlook. I happen to love her. And I also happen to love the fact that she finally realized she was worth more than she ever gave herself credit for. She has no qualms except killing, when it comes to helping ghosts cross over. I mean, she was in a strip club to help a ghost. Wait til you read the rest of it, I so giggled like a school girl. But when the tough get going, holy crap, Selene can go on a little rampage of her own. I have one dislike of Selene… Don’t mix business with pleasure. Don’t be “that girl” who becomes the homewrecker just because you can. Um-humm, she has a bad attitude at the beginning of the book, but by the end, I loved her self discovery, and I will say, she got an ending she almost maybe didn’t deserve. 🙂

Micah is fabulous. He’s what every woman dreams of getting in a man. I mean seriously, how many things can you forgive. LOL Plus he’s hot, and sweet, and thoughtful, and he can totally kick ass to get your back. Yep, even without being a werewolf, I think Micah is HAWT! 🙂 Andrew in one word, is SLIME. Ugh. I am not a fan, and with the ending, I can’t wait to see where this one is going to go. And Ethan, I am still a little devastated for him, but I have some good vibes coming for the next installment of the series. There are some excellent side characters that maybe don’t get a whole lot of time, but are still just as wonderful.

There are so many good things to say about this book. The set up with ghosts, necromancers, witches, the government. There are some excellent plans laid down for the plot and world building. I will say, I wish I knew just a tad bit more of the main characters “past” but honestly, I didn’t even realize it until I wrote this review. There are so many things keeping you on your toes that you don’t really care about childhood, and backstories. I really look forward to where this series can go. And that ending, though it’s not a cliffhanger, it is a definitely a shocker as you will say “holy…..” Yeah, I so did, because it’s the perfect opening for book two. So those of you who aren’t fans of those pesky cliff hangers, you’ll like this ending. I like it either way, because it leaves you wanting more, but also wraps up the major points. 🙂 Overall, excellent new start of a great new series! 4.5 GHOSTLY WITCHY SNARKY PAWS!!

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated or did you always just know?

My love of writing started when I was in junior high; a love that transitioned into writing short mystery and adventure stories.

What inspired you to write your first book and what was it?

I’m an avid reader but I hated reading books where the main characters were weak, the supporting characters were not diverse and/or are so perfect that it’s just not realistic. So, I started writing what I wanted to read…paranormal romance novels with diverse characters.

How do you choose when/which characters die in your books?

When I write, there’s a flow and rhythm to the story and characters. And as the story progresses, I go for what makes sense in the storyline. But I have to say as a writer it’s difficult because you become so attached to the characters.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

My journey to publication was an eye opening experience. As an author, you have to wear multiple hats to publish a truly polished book and it takes patience and resilience to ensure that it’s done right. When I started writing, I didn’t fully account for all of the nuances of the publishing business. There were hurdles that I had to overcome rather quickly. I learned that no matter how much you think you know about the business, reality is totally different.

What book are you reading now? Or what genre?

I’m a paranormal romance book junkie…they say I have to go to rehab and I say no-no-no. But right now, there’s more writing and no reading… I have a busy 2013 and 2014 book release schedule.

Did you learn anything from writing your books and what was it?

Writing is a journey. Embrace it. And never forget that perseverance and strength wins in the end.

If you could be one of your characters, who would you chose?

Great question! It would definitely be ‘Lightning’, Storm’s cousin and best friend.  She’s a fun character that is never afraid to say exactly what she means. She’s also complicated and misunderstood but she’s fine with it.

Are there any books you think some of us should read, just because?

Pride and Prejudice is my all-time favorite romance novel. It just never gets old.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Many, many hugs to my readers for the love and support you’ve shown me. Your enthusiasm for my books keeps me writing. Also, “Infinity Unleashed” (Valkyries: Soaring Raven, #2) scheduled for release December 2013.

I am TOTALLY ExCITED for a new Infinity book!!! I absolutely LOVED the first one! I sure do hope we can do something fun for that release 🙂 And thanks so much for stopping by!!!

The Legacy of Daddy

The Legacy of Daddy

Legacy of Daddy Excerpt
Chapter 3: The proper way to talk to oneself. When I was back in my quarters I responded to the…being. “We need to
have some ground rules. During my relationships, you will find something else to
do and give me some privacy. If you continue to be a dickhead I will eventually
resort to self-harm to rid myself of your presence. Do you understand?”
“Oh I understand what you want. I’ll see about accommodating you when it
suits us. Don’t forget that I can go mental also and you might be impressed by
the number of mental ailments to which my species were susceptible. We might
even create some new ailment in your species with a little manipulation. In your
slang the point is you’re not the boss of me.”
“What do you call yourself, since I’ve never asked?”
“I don’t have a name you would understand, and I don’t care to spend the
effort teaching you. However I think we should be called Dr. Abrams. I like that
name because it’s simple and will remind you that something has changed
forever in your life.”
“Being called by my middle name is going to do all that?”
“I believe it will be enough to behavior-modify you right now.”
I opened my eyes and realized I was on my back, on the floor. “What did you
do?”
“I did a little neural programming to insure you do something I like, not to
worry. Shall we get ready for sleep Dr. Abrams?”
“I think that is an excellent idea.”
When I awoke in the morning I barely remembered arguing with the entity
and not what it was about. Hopefully I will be able to recognize when it’s
attempting to control me.
I cleaned up, dressed and ate breakfast without speaking to a soul. When I
was about to enter the lab a tech greeted me, “Good morning Doctor Focsile,
how did you sleep?”
“Please call me Dr. Abrams; I don’t much care for my last name.” What the
hell just came out of my mouth? The tech looked at me like she’d love to pour
acid into my cereal and I empathized. I can hear it now, “That guy is a total
asshole.” What did I tell Etresca to call me? God, that’s going to eat at me all
day now, “Actually, please call me Robert, there is no need to be so formal. I
slept fine and you?” Oh my God, I hope that was the save I thought it was. She
loosened up and smiled at me again.
“I slept fine, thank you for asking?”
As she walked away I hoped that my relief of tension had gone unnoticed. I
abandoned my gawking perch by the door and moved to my lab bench. I spent
the remainder of the day programming nanites to regulate hormones for neural
activity. I lost about three hours of work time that I couldn’t remember what I was
doing. A new stasis jar with a new batch of reclamators was in front of me on the
bench and I had no idea how they had gotten there. “Did you do that?” The
asshole did not answer.
Since I was so tunneled into my work these days I had set a pad alarm for
the end of shift. When it went off I noticed that I had an email from security. It
was from Etresca, which gave me a warm feeling inside.Tomorrow can we meet at the air reclamation hydroponics atrium? I
will make us a picnic and can you bring desert. Say 1830?
Reply: Absolutely. You like chocolate right?
That will do. See you then.
I remembered to store the nanites I’d been working on in a stasis jar and I
closed down for the night. I scooped up my pad and headed for the canteen
lounge with a spring in my step. Etresca met me there and we had a lovely
evening which ended with a kiss.
The next morning I arrived at the lab to find security, including Etresca had
taped off the area. There was a shrinking puddle of blood on the floor of the
doorway and several forensic types were wandering around the benches looking
but not touching, smart guys.
“Officers, what has happened here and may I be of assistance?”
Etresca’s supervisor I assume answered, “One of your lab techs died here
last night and we don’t know yet if it was an accident, suicide or murder. Can
you help our forensic guys identify some things, Dr. Focsile?”
“Yes, of course and please call me Dr. Abrams I don’t really like my last
name.” That little bullshit that is emanating from my mouth is going to get me a
reputation. I imagine there will be some restroom wall tags addressing it unless
I’m overinflating my importance in people’s lives.
I wandered over to the first tech and asked if he had any questions. The tech
seemed puzzled by a tray of half eaten food that had been left on the bench. “Do
your people normally eat in this lab? I thought this was a quarantine risk lab.”

Author Interview

WELCOME! First, tell me a little about your book and why you wanted to write this particular story….

Legacy of Daddy was an interruption.  I had begun writing Next You Interstellar as my first novel but four chapters in I decided that I needed to write a prequel to build the universe in which my books would live.  Once I was done with it I found I could throw myself into the writing of Next You Interstellar full tilt.
Do you recall how your interest in writing originated or did you always just know?
My interest in writing was kindled in my senior year of high school then laid dormant for roughly thirty years while life and I got acquainted.  Now those experiences have formed a twisted and maniacal wealth that I intend to form into my stories.
What inspired you to write your first book and what was it?
Frustration at trying to get the family moving together and away from their electronics.  I decided to stop fighting them so much and to use my computer time for something constructive.
Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
My books will always have caricatures and mash ups of my lifelong encounters but no I do not draw from particular occurrences or people.  That would be messy.
How do you chose when/which characters die in your books?
If they are an invested character, they need to have achieved something of note or left something or someone of merit undone (bereft).  Eventually everyone moves on and we need to deal with that in books as well as life.  Suspension of disbelief is a therapy but it can also be a trap.
Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
Evan Currie  and Martin Schiller write my kind of space opera and Alex Butcher has cast new twists on Elves in her Beyond the Light Chronicles.  There are lots of new authors that are striving to create and I enjoy each new work in its own strengths and shudder at some of the goofs.
Who do you look up to as a writer?
That’s not a one answer question.  Prolificacy drives me to look at Stephen King and say, ‘Oh my gods, it’s a machine.’  Frank Herbert captured my imagination in his ability to world build, Isaac Asimov enthralled me with his intellect, Anne McCaffery entranced me with her visions of Dragons,…, told you it was more than one.
If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your book?
Not in the book but in the process.  That book went through some growing pains both in editing and covers as did the others of my first three:  Next You Interstellar and Having Nice Things.  There is definitely more involved than just crafting a good story.
Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Wrangling point of view.  I catch myself sometimes getting so into my characters that I might slip into first person in a section I meant to be the narrator.  As a side note I really am biased against the narrator as a story telling tool.
What book are you reading now? Or what genre? My followers love author’s opinions!
Currently I’m reading a paranormal romance adventure called Stained.  I have many genres represented in my TBR pile and I typically organize by date acquired.  That being said, if I hit three vampire novels in a row I will reorganize briefly so that I give them a fair shake and my…patience a time out.  Any thing in that pile I finish, I review.  If I don’t think I will like something I generally know by thirty percent in and pull the rip cord granting it the review of silence.  I don’t do negative reviews.
Who designed the cover? And do you help with them?
Belinda Pepper.  I help in that I pick out key, descriptive passages to her and she drives the bus.
Did you learn anything from writing your books and what was it?
I learned that I’m only good at writing things that interest me.  If I’m not into it, it will suck!
If you could be one of your characters, who would you chose?
PAS from Next You Interstellar, LLC.
Are there any books you think some of us should read, just because?
I think everyone should read books they enjoy and use those books as oases for sampling books they are on the fence about.  None in particular just read and keep reading.
Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
Thank you for reading my creation(s) and I hope I have left you wanting more.

How was I supposed to know that getting smashed on my 21st birthday would lead me to becoming the 9th victim of a serial killer that’s been stalking Philadelphia’s streets for months? Now I’m a ghost and unlife is pretty scary. Reapers, wraiths, ghouls, gargoyles: all of the monsters that I thought were storybook characters are real! On top of it all, the powers that be in the ghost world want to enslave me and use me in their own diabolical plot to manipulate the people of the living world. Too bad I didn’t turn out to be the kind of ghost they wanted me to be, and I’m not about to let them turn me into one of their puppets. These ghosts are responsible for my murder and the murders of eight other women.

A rebellion is coming, and the ghosts that run this place are about to find out just how big a mistake they made when they had me killed.

My name is Veronika Kane and being murdered isn’t the end of my story.

Wail of the Banshees is an Urban Fantasy Novel and the first book in the exciting Ghost Wars saga which features paranormal horror and action set in living Philadelphia and the ghostly world of Limbo.

My Review:

What an interesting way to look at an alternative world. When I think of Limbo, I’m thinking of being stuck in between, which is kind of similar, but takes on a whole new role. The ghosts that live here are not quite what you would expect from the average “limbo”.  And way to make sure the murder victim gets some justice. LOL I will definitely say this one was interesting!

Veronika is murdered, and must find her own killer. Hmmm, makes for something intriguing to start, right. She was murdered by a serial killer. He is also making a nuisance with the ghosts of Limbo.  Veronika not only has to save herself, as she is now a ghost there, but help save all the others too.  I liked this little twist. Usually a ghost has to find someone who can see them to get help. Here, the ghost must use their own creativity to do it. Plus, Veronika is a likable character as you only want to see her succeed.

The world building is probably the best part. It’s set in a city full of life and culture, not just for the living but for the dead. There’s lots of different “ghosts” because a “ghost” is so broad termed. Gargoyles are always AWESOME! 🙂 LOL There’s plenty of action going around trying to solve your own murder case as a ghost. The writing is easy, which I like because it means I don’t have to figure out what’s going on. I’m definitely a fan, and look forward to more! 4.5 GHOSTLY PAWS!!

About the Author:

welcome! First, tell me a little about your book :)….

Wail of the Banshees begins with the line “Getting your throat slit in a dark alley really sucks.” And so we begin with the protagonist, Veronika Kane going through this really traumatic experience of being murdered by a serial killer. Veronika lives on as a ghost and she must quickly learn the ways of the ghost realm of Limbo in which she has essentially been reborn. There’s a lot of mystery in the beginning with Veronika being obsessed with helping the living police capture her killer. At the same time, the ghosts who run Limbo are pretty evil and they want to corrupt her and use her to further their own nefarious goals. By the last half of the book, it’s clear to Veronika that she must put together a rebelion and lead it against overwhelming odds. In the process of this personal journey, Veronika suffers terribly, but her courage and determination to stand up for what’s right gives her the strength to fight on. Over all, this is a summer action movie novel. It’s meant to be enjoyed, there’s lots of cool action and enough suspenseful mystery to keep everyone intrigued. If you like interesting new places with new monsters and new rules, then the world of Limbo will keep you interested.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated or did you always just know?

My second grade teacher read The Hobbit to our class, that’s where my love of reading began. I read epic fantasy and sword and sorcery fantasy primarily. It didn’t take me long to start imagining my own tales and by the time that I reached the age of thirteen, I was trying to write them down. As a legally blind teenager, it seemed quite natural for me to go in the writer direction, after all, I couldn’t ever be a cop or Navy Seal, but I could write stories about them. I dabbled with writing throughout my teenage years but by the time I finished college, I’d put the dream aside to pursue a teaching career. It wasn’t until I started reading urban fantasy that the dream of authorship was rekindled. Urban fantasy fired up my imagination, its blending of the familiar world with the fantastical inspired me in ways that no other genre had done up till this point.

What inspired you to write your first book and what was it?

My first book is Wail of the Banshees and it is inspired by my love for urban fantasy and my desire to write about a protagonist that wasn’t a vampire, werecreature, fae, or detective. I played around with a lot of ideas for a few weeks and when I considered a ghost, I asked myself how the character became a ghost. It was then that I came up with the opening line for the book and I was hooked from that moment. Choosing the city of Philadelphia as my setting inspired the whole second half of the book and the idea for the Ghost Wars. Philadelphia has a rich history, amazing locations, and cool urban legends.

Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

Wail of the Banshees isn’t based on any life events or people that I know. As I’ve been doing interviews on this tour however, I’ve become aware of the messages that the story portrays, at least for me, and these do involve life experiences. Veronika is murdered at the beginning of the book, her story should end there but it doesn’t. Veronika discovers that there’s a whole new life in the afterlife, some of it is horrible, much of it is good. Many people believe that if they were to lose the use of their legs, or become blind, their life would somehow become not worth living. I know many people with disabilities who would disagree with this, and as a blind person myself I am very happy with my life. People find a way to overcome the odds, they learn to live with their challenges, and they overcome by adapting. This is what I get out of the story based on my experiences, I didn’t set out to shape this message and I’d guess that readers will take many different messages away from the story based on their own experiences.

How do you chose when/which characters die in your books?

In the case of Wail of the Banshees, we have two kinds of death to talk about. Getting killed in the mortal living world can lead to a second life as a ghost as is the case with protagonist Veronika Kane. Getting killed as a ghost leads to oblivion or final death though. Sending characters to their final death isn’t fun but it is the cost of war. Choosing who lives and who dies can be tricky. For me, I consider the emotional impact of the death and also what removing the character from future stories will mean to the meta-plot. I don’t have a formula, I just go with what feels right for the story.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

Actually I’m very intrigued by Mythos, book 1 of the Descendants series by VrindaPendred. I love all thing Cthulhu related and this just sounds cool. You can find her here;

http://www.amazon.com/Mythos-The-Descendants-Bookebook/dp/B00CNIMLXQ/ref=sr_1_2?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1376679918&sr=1-2&keywords=Mythos

Who do you look up to as a writer?

Jim Butcher and Brandon Sanderson. I’ve talked a lot about my admiration for Jim Butcher, his Dresden Files and Alera Codex are fantastic series. I love Jim’s ability to create cool and memorable scenes. I also admire Brandon Sanderson’s ability to create completely unique magic systems as he did in the Mistborn series.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your book?

No. That’s the great thing about the beta reading process and then the editorial revision. I really depend on my editor to help me fulfill the books full potential. My editor, Jaimee Finnegan is amazing and I feel that she helped me avoid any shortfalls in Wail of the Banshees.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

The revision phase is a lot of work and is very time consuming compared to writing the first draft. My bad vision makes this an even slower process. Being thorough and deliberate is very important though, this is where you make or break your book. You asked me about if there were any changes that I’d make looking back, if you do this phase right, the answer should be no. You really need to have a great editor to help you through this phase, luckily I do.

What book are you reading now? Or what genre?

I am currently reading Magic Rises by Ilona Andrews. It’s the sixth book in the Kate Daniels series of post apocalyptic urban fantasy. I just finished reading Seduced by Moonlight by Laurell K. Hamilton.

Who designed the cover? And do you help with them?

My cover designer is the talented Hannah Carr. She is a fellow tabletop RPG player and I occasionally play disc golf with her and her boyfriend. She and I do discuss what my vision for the cover is and then she makes it happen with her magic and hard work. I don’t pick an actual scene from the book but rather various images from the entire book.

Did you learn anything from writing your books and what was it?

One of the great things about being an author is that you are constantly learning new things. For Wail of the Banshees, I had to immerse myself in the city of Philadelphia. I learned about architecture and urban legends. One cool thing that I studied for a bit for the book was the history of American breweries, the architecture of the massive brewing factories, and the neighborhoods like Brewerytown that supported the brewery industry. I also learned about the devastating impact of Prohibition on the industry. Before Prohibition, there were over one hundred breweries in Philadelphia, many of them huge industrial complexes that employed hundreds of people. At the end of Probition, only a dozen or so returned to profitability in Philly. In book two, I studied the history of mental health treatment and in particular the ByberryStateHospital in Philadelphia. Of course I’ve also learned a lot about writing, social networking, marketing, and publishing.

If you could be one of your characters, who would you chose?

In Wail of the Banshees, I’d have to say Veronika. She’s determined and powerful, a lot of what she does is by the seat of her pants. In book two, I introduce two new characters that give Veronika a run for her money, including the wizard Nathaniel Carter. Which would I want to be between Veronika and Nathaniel? I’d have to go with Nathaniel since I’d prefer to be alive and not go through some of Veronika’s experiences.

Are there any books you think some of us should read, just because?

I read Gods of Gotham earlier this year and I’d recommend it to everyone. It is an amazing experience, 1840’s New York City will come alive for you in ways you can’t imagine.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Wail of the Banshees is supposed to be a fun read. If you are a fan of action on the level of The Matrix and the Harry Dresden books, then you will enjoy this novel. There’s a great story here, you’ll find mystery and suspense. I want to thank you for taking the time to read this interview and for reading my book. Author Interview:

WELCOME!! First, tell me a little about your book and why you wanted to write this particular story….

Shadow Embraced came about with my interest in the Romanian legend of the various vampires and were-creatures, and one question, what if there was a creature that these so-called monsters feared. Shadow Embraced is about Scar who gets told she is too dangerous to live in normal society so she gets pulled into a world full of these creatures, where she needs to learn to control the monster within before it consumes her. Throw in an underground fight club and a mysterious attacker that could be closer to Scar than she wants to believe.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated or did you always just know?

I always had an interest in creative writing at high school and loved creating stories for my younger siblings.

What inspired you to write your first book and what was it?

Oh, my first book will never see the light of day. I wrote the story for my younger sister, who was seven at the time, about a brother and sister who are pulled to a mystical land to help search for a lost princess and save the land.

Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

All experiences and characters are figments of my own imagination. Sometimes a quirk or saying that I’ve seen or heard from someone I know will catch my attention and find its way to one of my characters, but I never base an entire character on someone I know.

How do you choose when/which characters die in your books?

It’s funny, I don’t actually choose who I want to die in advance, I just let the events fall into place naturally. I didn’t actually need someone to die in Shadow Embraced, but I needed someone to get attacked and I had no idea who that was going to be up until the last edit, the events just naturally led to that outcome and I was happy with it.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

I always love finding new authors. A couple of new authors I’ve just discovered include Lindsey R. Loucks, author of the Grave Winner, and Lenore Appelhans, author of Level 2.

Who do you look up to as a writer?

I have a fantastic critique group at writing.com that offers great advice and support. These are definitely a group of people I look up to as a writer.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your book?

Nothing! I’ve spent a lot of time getting all the characters where they needed to be in the novel, and by the last edit I felt everything had just fallen neatly into place that I would just want to continue Scar’s story rather than rewrite it.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

I’m a perfectionist and I find it challenging to stop myself from constantly editing as I write. This slows down my writing process and I can be stuck in one place in the story as I continuously rewrite the section instead of moving forward with the story. Each time I start a new novel I promise myself I’m not going to read through any previous chapters until I finish the first draft so I don’t feel compelled to go through any edits.

What book are you reading now? Or what genre? My followers love author’s opinions!

I devour all things young adult and paranormal, and I’m currently enthralled in Amanda Sun’s debut Ink.

Who designed the cover? And do you help with them?

Silvia Paoletta at Dark World Books designed the cover for Shadow Embraced. She kept me involved with all the decision-making to ensure I was happy with the images she was using, but she had already read Shadow Embraced and had a firm idea of what Scar looked like and she did a fantastic job with the cover.

Did you learn anything from writing your books and what was it?

Yes, I learnt the importance of carrying around a notebook and pen as ideas can come from anywhere and at any time. If you look around my house you’ll probably find a dozen notebooks just lying around, as well as in the car and in my bag. I need to have a notebook everywhere.

If you could be one of your characters, who would you chose?

This is a hard question, mainly because I put my characters through hell, but if I have to pick, I’d have to pick my main character from my current WiP, Rin Morgan. Rin is half-Japanese and at the start of the story she is forced to move in with her grandparents over in Japan, and I absolutely love everything Japanese so I could go through hell if I got to live over there.

Are there any books you think some of us should read, just because?

I think readers should read anything they can get their hands on and if they like something make sure they recommend that book.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Yes, a big thank you!!!

You’re very welcome! 🙂 Thank YOU for stopping by to hang out with us!

CHAPTER One

Red

This is it. This has to be it! My entire life has been spent with someone holding me back. Always

holding my life in their hands and controlling my every move. Not now, not anymore. I’m taking my

life in my own hands. This is my new beginning, my long awaited, well-deserved fresh start.

I kick back a little more on the throttle of my motorcycle as the wind whips into my helmet and

leather jacket. It’s not quite the January weather I’m used to. The weather is milder and the wind is

much warmer down here in Louisiana. It’s nice and kind of comforting. My surroundings have

completely changed. I’m miles away from Kentucky. I take a quick peek around. The road has been

quiet for a few hours. It’s nearing dark. This also means I risk bigger animals coming out. Surely, they

have deer down here in Louisiana. I’ll have to find a place to lay my head anyways.

I’ve been riding for hours. It becomes uncomfortable on a motorcycle and I have to be nearing the

end of this tank of gas. Not to mention, my ass just so happens to be killing me. I peer at a few road

signs and see the few upcoming towns, nothing more than a local diner or two and a handful of gas

stations. Not even your typical cheap motel. I really am in the middle of nowhere. The tent in my

saddlebags will certainly come in handy tonight. At least, it’ll do until morning. Another 20 miles until

the next town, that doesn’t seem bad if I keep my 75 mile an hour pace. I relax and begin to look

forward to a peaceful night’s sleep. Until the loud sputtering from my motorcycle jolts me back to full

awareness.

“Son-of-a-bitch!” I cry out from underneath my helmet. I’d misjudged my mileage and with no gas gauge, I had no way of telling when I’d run out of gas. I’m luckily able to roll my bike to a slow and

steady stop off on the shoulder of the road. I shake my head, wanting to give myself a good hard kick

for not being more careful. I glance around as I hop off. Figures, I am surrounded by nothing but woods

and my guess, swamps and nearly 20 miles away from any town. This isn’t exactly what I had in mind

when I said I would make use of the tent in my saddlebags. I let out an exasperated sigh as I undo the

chinstrap to my helmet, yanking it off my head and let my hair fall around my shoulders. I bite down

on my lip and contemplate. I can’t leave my bike here on the side of the road. I can’t walk 20 miles and

back just for gas with it already so dark either. I have no choice. I’ll walk my bike into the woods and

set up camp. People do this all the time, right? No big deal. It’s not like the big bad wolf will jump out

and get me. I peer into the woods. Darkness has already fallen over the trees. They stand quiet and still

as even the animals, it seems, have all gone quiet for the night. I laugh off the thought of the big bad

wolf. I guess it’s alligators I have to watch fordown here. Or, is it crocodiles? I shiver, put on a brave

face and straddle my bike once more. It’ll take all my strength to waddle it down the ditch and into the

woods over the uneven terrain. I figure a short way off the side of the road and into the woods and I

should be fine. Enough to be out of the line of traffic but not enough to get myself terribly lost. As I

wiggle the bike down the small slope I begin to exert myself on the flat but rough terrain as I push the

bike forward, throwing my petite body into it as much as I can. I grunt as I give one more strong push

forward. The bike lurches along slowly as my helmet clangs against the already scratched black paint. I

groan, aggravated with myself more than ever for letting the gas tank get bone dry.

“What in the hell are you doing?” I stop dead in my tracks. I hadn’t heard a single footstep, not even a twig. I swallow hard and throw myself off the bike, flipping out the kickstand as I do.

I turn slowly to see a rugged looking man staring hard at me. His dark washed jeans are splattered

with dirt and debris at the bottom, suggesting that he has been romping in the woods beyond. His heavy

boots are caked in a layer of thick mud that’s starting to dry in certain spots. He places his hands on his

hips, making his leather jacket open to display a well-fitted tee shirt that I can see defined chest

muscles, visible even under the moonlight. His gray eyes shine and shimmer under the light of the full

moon as they glare at me in an almost threatening way. No, not threatening. Warning me of something

and somehow worried. His brown hair is styled fairly nice, which is surprising considering the 5

o’clock shadow on his face. He’s much larger than me. Well, almost everyone is larger than me, but he

must be over 6 foot tall. Huge compared to my tiny 5’5” frame. “You shouldn’t be out here alone.”

I glare at him and swallow, not quite sure of what to say. “I don’t have a choice.” I tell him, “I ran

out of gas.”

His eyes shift to my motorcycle. He lets out an almost mocking chuckle, “You ride that?”

I nod, “How else do you think I got here?” I shoot, now just feeling annoyed with him. I turn back to my bike as I kick the stand up and start on my way.

“I wouldn’t go in there if I were you,” He hollers.

“Good thing I’m not you,” I yell back. This time, the footsteps are unmistakable. They’re loud and

pounding on the earth. I have a sudden urge to drop my bike and run, but where? I feel his hands on the

handlebars of my bike and I feel myself sigh out of relief. I look over at him and for the first time, I

think I catch a smile.

“I can’t let you go into these woods alone.” He tells me as he helps guide the bike forward.

“And just why not?” I ask. “I’m in the middle of nowhere. I don’t have much of a choice and I’m

not staying on the side of the road.”

His gray eyes suddenly turn on me. I stop dead in my tracks and stare back. They’re bright, silvery glow almost matches the full moon. I gasp, shocked and almost frightened by their beauty. “The big bad wolf might get you, Red,” He winks. I let out an unsure chuckle. By big bad wolf, he could mean himself or an actual animal. I feel my

heart rate quicken as he shoots me another smile, “Don’t worry, I won’t hurt you.”

“And, just how do I know that?” I ask, now letting him take on the full weight of the motorcycle.

He glances over at me, almost unsure himself. He stops and seems to think about something for a

moment, “You just have to trust me, Red.”

“Trust you? A man I just met in the woods.” I say, crossing my arms in front of me.

“I did just meet you in the woods,” He declares.

I think for a moment, lick my lips and give him a nod. “But, I’m half your size. You could take me out in a second,” I tell him. I snap my mouth shut realizing what I’ve just said.

He laughs. “Relax Red, you’re safe. I won’t let the big bad wolf get you,” He winks.

            “Red?” I ask, finally.

He takes a moment to nod toward my red leather jacket and helmet. Both are a brighter red. I’m

stupid. I feel myself laugh for a moment as he starts pushing the bike forward again, “Where exactly do

you want this thing?” He questions.

“Just off the road, where someone passing by can’t see my bike,” I tell him.

“Someone passing by, huh,” He says, coming to a row of trees that he hides the bike behind.

“Would that someone passing by be anyone in particular?” He plops the kickstand down and stands the bike carefully. His silvery-gray eyes meet mine again.

“Just,” I pause. “Just some old ex, he’s sort of a pain in my ass.”

“Ahh,” he breathes out, “Running from the ex.”

I stop and think for a second, “Something like that.”

“That must mean you’re not from around here,” He says.

I shake my head. “Kentucky,” I mumble as I shove my hands into my pockets.

“So, Red, you have a name?” He questions.

“Samantha Wentworth,” I mumble softly. “Everyone calls me Sam.”

“Well, I’m not everyone,” he states matter-a-factly, “I’ll call you Red.”

I stare at him, almost confused for a few moments. “Just who exactly are you?”

“Ethan Parker,” He tells me. “Just call me the keeper of these woods.”

“Am I on your land?” I ask, knowing that back home a few people I know have their land stretching for miles. Some so far that they reach county roads.

He gives his head a slight shake, “Not exactly.”

“Going for a walk?” I ask, glancing again at his simple jeans, tee shirt and leather jacket.

“You could call it that.” His expression changes, he glances at me in a nearly pitiful way, as though he feels sorry for me. I quickly look down at my feet and kick a small stick out of the way. “You really should find your way into town, somewhere safe.”

“I’m not walking twenty miles just to get to some run down motel,” I say. “Besides, that’d be the

first place.” I stop myself suddenly and bite hard on my tongue. I refuse to tell him anything too

personal.

“That would be the first place he would look.” Ethan finishes suddenly.

I look up and into those gray eyes. They soften as he turns his head slightly to the side. I open my

mouth to speak but for some reason not a single sound comes out.

“I’m sorry,” He tells me. “I shouldn’t pry. It’s none of my business.” He looks me up and down,

taking me in. His eyes stop on mine and his lips curl up and into a slight smile. Finally, he releases a

soft sigh, “Well, I can’t just leave you out here alone.”

“You can’t?” I ask, taking a few steps back.

He laughs, holding up his hands, “Look, Red, I’m not going to hurt you.”

“And, just how in the hell do I know that?” I shoot as I take one more step back.

He laughs again, bringing his hand up to rub the back of his neck, “You just have to trust me. You remind me of someone I knew, someone that I would never hurt.”

“Your girlfriend?” I ask, now finding myself giving him the once over. His dark hair, his silvery

eyes that I now feel are beginning to glow under the fast rising full moon. His frame is built, he’s

strong. His chest muscles seem to pop from underneath his simple tee shirt. His body tenses for a brief

moment and relaxes as he shakes his head.

“I’m sorry.” Now I feel as though I’ve invaded his privacy.

“It’s okay,” He says softly. “She was my sister.”

Was, he’s speaking in past tense. I suddenly get a feeling she’s not among the living and clench my teeth, begging myself not to say another word about it. I fight through my mind for something to say. I don’t have many conversations with people, especially strangers. To my relief, he’s the first to speak.

“How long have you been riding?” He asks.

I feel my jaw relax, “About six years. This is just some old bike that I helped fix up.” I look down at it with it’s now empty gas tank. “Guess I should work harder at judging the mileage on the gas tank.” I

let out an annoyed laugh.

“What exactly was your plan once you got it here in the woods?” He questions, staring down at the two meager saddlebags.

“Camp out,” I say, wrapping my arms tightly in front of me. “My whole life is pretty much wrapped up in those two bags.”

His glittery eyes flit down to the bags again and the corners of his lips curl down into a small frown, “Seems sad to have your whole life in just those two little things.”

“Yeah, well,” I start kicking another stick, “I don’t have much.”

“No family?” He looks up at me; his eyes now take on a sad expression. The corners of them crease slightly as he blinks.

I shake my head, “It’s a long story.”

“I’m sorry.” He tells me, “I’m not trying to be.”

            “Invasive? Nosey?”

He laughs. “I’m just trying to make conversation. I did just find you in the woods, alone, trying to

push a bike twice your size behind the trees.” His eyes finally meet mine, “You are in my territory.”

“I didn’t know you had a territory,” I tell him. “What are you, some dog marking his territory?”

He turns his head up and goes into a fit of laughter. “Look, you’re certainly not in your comfort

zone. You’re not from here. You’re in the woods with a complete stranger.”

“Look, I get it,” I say, “I’m in your territory, all alone in the middle of nowhere. How many times

can you say it?” I roll my eyes, now annoyed with both my bike and him.

“It’s a full moon, you know.” He says.

I look at him a little confused but finally nod in agreement.

“You look cold.” He says, “I know this place. I could take you there.”

“A place,” I begin, “In the middle of some woods?” I stare hard into him as though I can read his

thoughts. He seems sincere enough. He doesn’t have the face of a serial killer. But, then again, neither

did Ted Bundy.

“There are lots of places hidden back in the woods,” He tells me, pointing around him. “Would you believe people live in the woods out here?”

Now I just feel like he’s mocking me. “I guess I don’t have much of a choice. It’s either with you in the woods or without you in the woods. And, you at least know where you’re going.”

His eyes turn on me again and his expression changes. He seems to tense and then slowly relaxes. He gives me a silent nod.

I shake my own feeling of uneasiness. “So, that place, it’s warm?” I say, looking up at the night sky.

“I’m going to bet it gets a little colder out here at night.”

He shakes something off as he glances at the ground briefly, “Not much, but you probably will get chilly in just the leather.”

I look at my old and faded leather jacket. The red leather is soft and worn from years of use but I’ll be the first to admit, it’s not to warmest thing on Earth. “So, you lead the way?” I ask.

He quickly looks away from me and nods, “This way.” He trails quietly deeper into the woods. I

glance back at my bike and my helmet before heading after him.

“We’ll be able to find my bike again, right?” I call after him, now sprinting to keep up. He gives

me a quick nod. “Hey!” I cry out, “Since when are we in a hurry?”

He stops dead in his tracks to look up at the moon. “Can’t keep up?”

I shoot him a dirty look, “Yes, but I just figured we didn’t have to be in such a hurry.”

He turns to look at me and laughs. I can’t keep the uneasy feeling from tying a knot in my stomach.

I feel somewhat ridiculous to even trust him. I feel as though I’m breaking one of the cardinal rules of ‘stranger danger.’ Here I am following some man I don’t know into woods that I’m completely clueless about. I have got to be stupid. Not only am I going willingly but now my guide is laughing like some crazed lunatic. What in the hell is he laughing at? I find myself laughing nervously, “You know, if you’re busy, we don’t,” I stop. “You don’t have to.”

His expression changes once more to a soft, sad and sincere one, “It’s okay, I’ve got time.”

I draw in a long breath and release it slowly. His expression softens again and he shakes his head,

“Don’t worry about your bike. I know this place a little too well.”

I finally nod as he begins walking in a slower pace. I catch up to him easily this time and keep a

steady pace by his side.

“How old are you, Red?” Now I can hear a smile in his voice.

“Twenty-four,” I glance over at him, “How old are you?” He doesn’t look any more than 25 to be

honest. No fine lines, no wrinkles. Just perfectly flawless skin buried under the scruff of facial hair.

“Thirty.” He says, keeping his eyes forward.

I bury my hands in my pockets and send a breath outward, “What exactly do you do?”

“I’m a mechanic,” He tells me. “I work on cars. I have my own business for restoration,” He

explains.

“I’m not an idiot,” I tell him. “I know what a mechanic does.” I shoot, now annoyed.

He laughs, “And just what do you do?”

I peer at my feet and lick my lips, “I don’t really have a job. Not a steady one any ways. I work

where I can and save what I can.”

I see him nod from the corner of my eyes. “Do you always ride the bike everywhere?”

I give him a nod. Other than my red leather jacket, my bike is my most valued possession. It’s a

complete luxury for me, despite its age and I’m very lucky to have it in the first place. “It’s all I have.

Besides, gas is cheap.”

He finally turns his head to look at me, “What do you do in the winter?”

I stop and kick a large clump of hardening mud over my boots, “Migrate south.”

This makes him laugh again as he gives me a genuine smile, one that gives me a little pang of

excitement somewhere deep inside. I smile back, “It’s supposed to be warm down here, right?”

“Something like that.” He says, as his feet start moving. “So, how long do you plan on staying

here?”

I shrug, “As long as my ex doesn’t find me.”

“Is he that bad?” He asks.

I keep my eyes forward and give him a little nod. I suddenly feel something on my back. I peer next to me and realize his hand has gently landed on the small of my back giving me a soft pat. I fight the

urge to walk faster, to pull myself way. I swallow hard and feel my heart rate quicken. I look up and

into his gray eyes again and I can’t help but to notice that as he moves they seem to bounce light off in

the way an animal’s would. I shake out of my thoughts but can’t seem to manage to pull my eyes away

from him.

He pulls his hand away and shyly looks away, “Sorry.” He shakes his head, “I get the impression

he’s hurt you.”

“He wasn’t nice.” I say, putting a good width of distance between us.

“Sorry,” He says softly. He glances over at me again, “You just remind me a lot of her.”

            “Of your sister?” I ask.

He gives me another nod and looks down. I can tell he’s struggling with something. His body tenses and relaxes a few more times. He glares at his feet and shoves his fists into his pockets.

“Sure is light out here.” I say, making a quick attempt to change the subject.

He laughs and looks up, “The full moon will do that, Red.”

I suddenly feel silly and half-stupid. “I just didn’t think it would light up the woods.” Even in total darkness, I can feel the heat beginning to rise off my cheeks.

“What. You mean to tell me you don’t go playing in the woods alone back in Kentucky, Red?” He asks.

I let out a soft chuckle, “Not exactly.”

“It’s just a little bit further.” He states as we both step over a large, fallen tree log. “It’s not too far

from your bike, like I said, and we can easily find it.”

I nod as I begin trailing behind him. If I feel a threat, I can at least put distance between us,

strategically place him in front of me to easily watch his moves. I’m smaller and may be quick enough

to, at the very least, outrun him if needed. It’s getting out of the woods in the right direction I need to

worry about if worse comes to worse. I keep my eyes forward and there in a small clearing of trees

with the bright moonlight highlighting it, is a small and run down cabin.

My Review:

So, I bet you were thinking this is all Little Red Riding Hood… Well, it is… but it isn’t. Little Red is an adult with some serious issues and a totally warped past. The Big Bad Wolf, isn’t bad, nor a wolf. But I’m getting ahead of myself. This is a very VERY cool retelling of the fairy tale. This is also the more adult, much more realistic tale, as the fairy part leaves out all the things that happen in life, like fights, and kidnapping, and abuse. 🙂 I am now a fan of this author, as I loved the way it was done.

So Sam, aka Red, is red riding hood. She is literally called Red the whole story so I would forget her name is actually Sam. LOL She’s had a rough life. I feel bad for her, and then I wanna slap her sometimes because no one should ever take abuse as an adult, but when you’ve had it your whole life, I guess you can’t help it. But when you get the chance to rescue yourself, why, oh why, would you continue to not learn from your mistakes, like staying away from said abuser. Anyways, on the positive note, I do believe her as a character. She wants to better herself and she’s sweet and kind, even with her past. She’s funny. She’s got an awesome motorcycle. LOL She, however, totally pulled a majorly ridiculous stunt toward the end that I wanted to kill her myself for pulling. *sigh* But even with that, I am actually a fan of Red. I do understand how being surrounded by 7 crazy men would probably drive me a little insane 🙂

Ethan is…. the big bad wolf…. again, he isn’t bad, or a “wolf” but I will leave that in quotations, because you will have to read it to get it. Like, seriously, at first, I was taken back, because how do you have a big bad wolf without the wolf, but this is a totally awesome way to spin it. And well done, as well. Ethan is a major little hottie. I mean, I want an Ethan. However, being from Louisiana, I think we may clash, because I would totally put him and all his brothers in “their place” which is not the alpha! HAHAHAHA Yeah, it’s a Louisiana thing 🙂 But I like him. Alot. He literally meets Sam, and wham, he’s figured out she’s his mate in just a few short hours after meeting her, and then things go like crazy sideways. I don’t know how else to put it, because everything went nuts. LOL However, that big bad wolf will do anything to protect his mate. And though he loses it midway through, he came around. He, or any of those crazy brothers, can be my big bad wolf anytime 🙂

So, this story is also a little mystery as well. Because you will find out that there is a big bad wolf. And there’s trouble. And some serious plot twists. There wasn’t anything like this in the original Little Red Riding Hood. LOL I loved that part. It’s still a romance fairy tale story, but it’s got action, it’s got heart ache, it’s got some major plot twists that maybe aren’t so PG, and it’s definitely got intrigue appeal. I read this one in one sitting because I really just enjoyed it. I’ve decided I wanna be Team Colt or Aaron-as they are twins LOL I bet that would go over well 🙂 Anyways, if you are a fan of fairy tale retellings, you should really check this one out! I’m hoping that this will be a series not only helping out Ethan’s brothers find their fairy tale endings, but maybe to reach out with some of the other fairy tales added to it 🙂 4.5 UNPREDICTABLE FAIRY TALE INSPIRING PAWS!!

Author Interview:

First, WELCOME! Now, tell me a little about your book 🙂 ….

-Little Red is a fairy tale retelling of one of my favorites, Little Red Riding Hood. I took the classic tale, modernized it and put a few of my own twists on it, to include a little bayou magic. 🙂

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated or did you always just know?

-I’m sure that I just always knew. For as long as I can remember my family said I would run around with a pen and a pad of paper and scribble. I was told this was well before I could truly write but according me, they were full stories. I think as I grew it just stuck and when I think about it, unless I was too little remember, I can’t think of a time that I didn’t write.

What inspired you to write your first book and what was it?

-When I was in high school, about 2001, I was asked to write a short story for an English class. I remember the teacher told us to be as creative as we wanted and that was my cue to let my imagination run completely wild. I’d always had a love a vampires, since seeing Bram Stoker’s Dracula, so I took the idea of vampires and put my own twist on them. It was about 12 pages and when the teacher pulled me to the side I sort of dreaded when she had to say. I was rewarded with being told to run with this idea, take it as far as I could. And, I did. Darkness Falls: Hunted was the first of the 6 book Darkness Falls series, published in December 2010.

Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

-Depends on which book you look at. 🙂 I do tend to take things from real life and add them in books as a tribute for loved ones. Randi the heroine in Darkness Falls, came from my dad. Matt, in Darkness Falls was modeled from my own younger brother. Wanda, a nurse in Hunted was for my mother. Lyndsey in my upcoming release, The Shoe was from a wonderful friend who helped inspire the entire book. Hunter in The Shoe was modeled for the handsome Parker Hurley. Not everyone will get the references, but people who know me do. It’s definitely a fun way to thank those who inspire me.

That’s one of the coolest answers I’ve ever gotten from this question! How do you chose when/which characters die in your books?

-It’s funny that as I write these characters become completely real to me. If I’m writing something and the character is an enemy, they become my enemy and truthfully as I write they get on my nerves, haha. So as I’m writing, I have them push the buttons of the hero or heroine and that gets me going more. The ones who die are definitely the enemies that I love to hate. When I feel that I’ve just had enough of them, is usually the best time to off them in the book.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

-I’ve had a few Front Porch Romance authors grab me, like Melinda De Ross and Monica Garry-Allen. It’s making me really look forward to reading the others with the Front Porch Romance team.

Who do you look up to as a writer?

-I’ve always loved Stephen King. He’s Stephen King not much explanation there, haha. Janet Evanovich, James Patterson, Jane Austen, Roald Dahl. But I would have to say my absolute favorite and this always shocks everyone, Dr. Seuss.

Dr. Seuss should be everyone’s favorite 🙂 If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your book?

-You know, I would love to go back and make Little Red longer, I tried so hard to keep it shorter, to be more fairy tale like and there were parts that I didn’t want too drawn out but at the same time I would love to see what I could have done with it being longer.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

-I will plan a road for my characters that I want them to take but as I write, they can take a whole different turn. It’s always challenging because it’s not planned and at that point I really begin just rolling with it, one sentence at a time, and see where the characters take themselves. It’s challenging at times not knowing their paths, but it’s fun at the same time.

What book are you reading now? Or what genre?

-Right now I’m not reading anything but I have a few romances that are lined up to read that I can’t wait for!

Who designed the cover? And do you help with them?

-Charisma Knight designed the cover. I actually took the photo for Little Red, the cloaked figure in the trees was my addition but turning it into the amazing cover that it is was all Charisma who done just an amazing job. I definitely try to help where I can and give ideas for my visions.

Did you learn anything from writing your books and what was it?

-There have been a couple books of mine, Loverboy and the upcoming title Rising, where I’ve learned a lot. Rising, in particular was for a friend who I lost at a young age and it really taught me to open up about him and that letting go didn’t mean I had to forget him.

If you could be one of your characters, who would you chose?

-Do I have to pick just one? Haha! I’m torn between so many for different reasons. To narrow it to just one…I’ll say Blair, who you’ll meet in the upcoming release The Shoe. She sort of lives the fairy tale dream and literally becomes Cinderella. I think as a kid I was definitely one to pretend I was Cinderella and the handsome Prince Charming swept me away, so that seems perfect for me.

Are there any books you think some of us should read, just because?

-Any of Roald Dahl’s or Seuss’s because they’re fun and will probably bring back so much of your childhood that it’s scary. Kid’s books are my way of unwinding.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

-As always, thank you! I certainly wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the fan base that I’ve developed and I appreciate each and every one of you! As a writer, I really do write because I love it and I love my characters so when I see that people have grown to love them as I do, it’s so touching.

I also want to give a very special thanks to my friends, Amanda, Emily, and Lyndsey. Without them, there would be no Little Red and the Believe series. A lot of lost sleep, talks about the series, and lots of encouraging me. I really can’t thank them enough.

You’re so welcome and I hope we can do this again soon!!! Thank YOU for coming hang out with us 🙂

Book Release Date: August 27th, 2013
Title: Switch
Synopsis:
All’s fair in love and war.
Two thirds of the world’s population has been wiped out, devastated by the worst war earth has ever seen. Still standing amongst the ruins is a mind reader who finds herself on the wrong side of the war. Everyone does what they must to survive. When the rebels bent on bringing down the New World leader start to rise up, it is her job to make sure they stay down where they belong. That is, until one rebel sneaks past her defences and into her heart. Love will blossom from the ashes, but will it be enough to save them, or will it mean the end of them both?

My Review:

So, I know people keep telling me to read-and watch- the Hunger Games. Yes, I own all the books, the original hardback versions, but no I have not read them yet. When I think dystopian, I actually think of David Estes’s Dweller series. Yes, I so love me some of that whole series. BUT, I can’t compare anything to hunger games because I haven’t read them YET. I AM, however, probably the biggest fan of Ms. Stalder’s Eden series. So, I was, at first, not sure about how much I was going to like this series being so different from Eden. Except, it’s not completely different. There are always two sides to everything when it comes to Ms. Stalder’s writing. You see, in the Eden series, you are never exactly sure who is really the bad guys, because there’s good on both sides, and bad on both sides. Well, let me just say that there is this case here too. Except that this one is much more adult themed, much more intense in the war section, as it’s already happened, the almost end of the world and these are who are left. There are always two sides to everything. Makes you think a little harder about how you look at things, as well. I have so much to say about this book, but I will be careful, because I will NOT spoil anything for anyone. This one is way too good to do that. 🙂

So, what if you made it through the apocalypse? What if you and your sister and your parents lived through the bombing that took out a serious amount of the world’s population, and though bruised and bent, not everyone is completely broken. But some things are extremely messed up. Charlotte is this girl. She and her family made it. Yes, this world is pretty rough, but at least she has her family, until that day. That day, Charlotte will forever be changed and will become Dinah. Dinah is nothing like Charlotte. Charlotte may have been stubborn, but she was sweet and somewhat innocent and carefree. Dinah is ruthless, and meticulous, and completely a killer. You see, Dinah has a gift, and as Charlotte kept it hidden, but as Dinah uses it everyday to be one step ahead on this war against the rebels. Except one day, she meets a rebel that she just can’t use her gift on, and she also can’t seem to get her mind off of either.

Pete McKay is a total HAWT piece. LOL He knows it too. He’s gorgeous, he’s leading the rebels, and he’s actually a good guy. He’s with the rebels because he wants a better life. They army is harsh, and quite terrible and they kill for no reason sometimes. All he wants is for his family and friends to be able to live. He’s willing to risk his life for this cause, until he meets Dinah. Except there are some serious plot twists. And these plot twists will BLOW YOUR MIND!! Ok, I predicted some of them, but definitely not all of them. Those caught me completely off guard. I mean, you will be slack jawed and totally shocked.

There are wonderful side characters and world building here. There’s plenty going on, getting glimpses into some of the secondary character’s heads. It makes for a much more interesting story when you not only see into the main character’s heads, but seeing the outside as well. Plus, the world building is majestic. Who knew you could become so engrossed into something like an apocalyptic London. I sure did. And that’s the really cool part. You don’t have to know what London looks like now, because it won’t even be similar to what it looks like in the book. Ms. Stalder creates a setting that you can literally see while you are reading. It’s quite fantastic.

I cannot tell you if love is the greatest of them all. I am thinking you will have to read to find out if Pete McKay and Dinah can make it out alive. But I CAN tell you that my love for this author not only grew, but has flown to the moon. I am still the hugest fan of the Eden series, but with the writing that comes from this author, it’s completely impossible to not fall in love with EVERYTHING she writes. This is the first book of the series, and it was beyond expectations. I am not quite sure I can find the words to express how wonderful she can articulate a few words to make magic happen. Seriously, I don’t care that I haven’t read the Hunger Games, I am now going to start saying, “It’s so awesome, just like Switch and The Dwellers series” and then my people will know that it’s related to the top tiers of Dystopian EPICNESS!

I will leave you with the fact that though there is not very many happy days in this world, there is some happiness that will make your heart swell. You will fall in love with the main players of the army, then you will completely cheer for the good guys of the rebels. You will beg for more, you will cry, you will laugh, you will get frustrated, and then you will be in total shock when you realize you read the whole thing, and NEED more. I am so proud to call Ms Stalder an author friend. She will always be a “must buy” because how could she not be after everything she writes. 🙂 Seriously, when this is released, get your copy faster that you swat a fly- I swat them extra fast LOL! You will not only be missing out if you don’t, I will no longer think you to be the smart reader you can be 🙂 This is not only magic in writing, it’s like an artist making that one of a kind painting that is breathtaking! If I were a giving kind I would go straight into the 5 PAWS rating, but with this one, I just HAVE to give a rare, EXCEPTIONALLY MAGNIFICENT, PHENOMENAL, BREATH TAKING 6 PAWS!! Yes, I am giving a series starting that rating, which I have NEVER done before. This one was amazing. There isn’t anything else to say, but “what are you waiting for?”

Next You: Destined For Something

Destined for Something Excerpt
Moving Day (Not exactly PG-13)
We arrived at level four meeting the movers at residence four seventy three
just emerging from their cargo platform. They were not to begin until we
removed the official. I opened the hard case and issued us our doses of HighPerc that would last for ten minutes. As soon as we armored and armed we
each inhaled slowing down time. I crashed through the door first while
simultaneously Lionel vaulted me stunning the official and his wife. And his
daughter. And his grandmother. And his male sex worker dressed in a thong
made of barb wire. Yea, that seemed to be everyone.
I looked up from the floor to see a man at least ten kilos bigger than me
yelling at us as the fog from the High-Perc left. “You dumb asses hit the wrong
place. The official and his wife live at four seventy four.” That registered and
Lionel grabbed me up off the ground from my left shoulder as we rushed to use
the last of the High-Perc to take out four seventy four. I had just enough left to
get me through the door and Lionel didn’t show boat this time, one stun per target
and only two. Fuck me.
The big guy came in smiling “You guys are lucky. That was the Chairman of
the Community Ethics Committee. He won’t be pressing any charges. As soon

as the meat bags are gone we’ll do our thing.” He kept smiling as he raised his
wrist and tapped at the watch he wore.
Lionel ran out and backed the armored car to the front door. I mag clamped
both their hands and tossed them in the back. I asked “Was that quick enough
for you zipper head?” Turning to the noise of Lionel slamming the back door I
caught the giant’s fist on the left side of my face and luckily the wall stopped my
flight. Somehow I got in the passenger seat and we were moving.
Lionel “What the fuck is your problem? We got to work with these guys.”
I didn’t know what my problem was so I kept silent and he glared at me until
he needed to maneuver the car through tight corridors. The drop was in sub
level fourteen and the only requirement was that it not be within two hundred
meters of an elevator or stairs. We reached the level and he found a large
enough old construction staging area to get up to ten kilometers per hour, I
triggered the hatch to flip up as he turned the car a one eighty and stopped
abruptly. The sound of stuff rolling out onto the concrete was all we heard. I
closed the hatch and remote released the mag-clamps as we pulled away.
Looking in the side mirror I saw the woman attempt to get up and move to her
husband as the first Ravenarous launched from the shadows tearing a big
enough chunk out of her chest that from fifty meters I could see the fountain of
blood.

Alright guys! I hope you check this author and his books out. Next week, I’ll have him over for an interview! I wish you all Happy reading! Later gators!
