Chenoire (A Short Story)

Susannah Sandlin

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Heat level: mild

Publisher: StoryFront

Date of Publication: December 18, 2013

Number of pages: 50

Word Count: approx. 15,000

Book Description:

When Faith Garrity’s twin sister died, she lost a part of herself. Unable to move past the pain, the once-driven ornithologist is at risk of losing her career as well. To save her job, she heads to the oil-ravaged wetlands of Louisiana. There, in the bayou community of Chenoire, she encounters the handsome but guarded Zackary Préjean, still suffering from a great loss of his own.

She’s drawn to Zack, but soon finds that the Préjean family isn’t what it seems… They have dangerous secrets—and deadly enemies. Caught up in a feud that threatens the area’s uneasy truce, Faith and Zack must learn to trust each other. Survival will require enormous sacrifice, but it just might also give them both a way to move on.

Short Excerpt:

Zack Préjean wiped the blood from his skinning knife onto the faded blue bottom of the apron he wore, scanning the bayou that backed up to his papa’s back porch. Something had drawn his attention, but he couldn’t figure out what.

He’d been working on the small gator for half an hour, figuring to take off enough fresh meat for dinner and prep the rest to deal with later—it was too small for the skin to be worth much. The calls and caws of the birds and cackles of swamp hens soothed him, and God knew he needed soothing. Spending the whole month of gator season at Chenoire wasn’t what he wanted to be doing. But Papa had asked him outright for help, and he had to honor that.

Finally, he figured out what had caught his attention; the bayou was too quiet. He wedged the knife through his apron ties, covered the gator with a towel, and closed his eyes to focus on what he could hear. Footsteps coming from the path leading down to the house—heavy ones, stirring up a whiff of anger.

Zack tripped on his way through the kitchen, catching his toe on the edge of a chair because he’d been staring out the front window instead of watching where he was going. All this family time must be getting to him, because for a moment he swore he’d seen not a man on the path that angled toward the small circle of houses where the Préjeans had lived for generations.

No, he thought he’d seen an angel.

Except angels didn’t stomp their feet, curse like sailors, and swat at bugs, which is what this one appeared to be doing. What the hell was a woman doing on foot way out here at dusk?

Crossing his arms over his chest, Zack leaned against the frame of the front door, silent and still, waiting to see what trouble she brought. She looked like a city woman, and city women always brought trouble.

He couldn’t keep the grin off his face. Whatever else she was, his citified swamp angel was pissed off and dirty as sin. Bits of mud flaked off what might be a long, lean pair of legs underneath the grime that covered her from her shoes to the bottom of her khaki shorts—or maybe they were mud-covered black shorts. Hard to tell. Her hands flew around her head, batting at what Zack knew were probably the armies of tiny no-see-ums that swarmed near the small stand of trees this time of day. Occasionally, she swatted at her own head, giving her short blond hair a disheveled look he’d mistaken for a halo.

“Damned gnats. I’m gonna—” The angel finally spotted him and stopped in her tracks, dark-blue eyes growing wider as her gaze dropped from Zack’s face to the vicinity of the knife.

He cleared his throat and stifled the laugh that threatened to escape. “You lost, Angel?”

My Review:

And another wonderful story by Ms Sandlin! Yes I know it’s a short story, but even her short stories have a way of making you love the characters, get caught up in their lives, and root for their HEA!! Before I get really into it, I have two questions… Is Zack’s family related to Rene’s- you know from the “other series”? And if so, I bet they are but, could you find room for one of those HAWT pieces for me? I don’t live too far ya know!! Lol ok now for the big talk. This story got me because it’s sweet and fun but it’s also about living with the death of a loved one and learning to actually live. Damned if I didn’t tear up twice!

So after a tragedy, Faith is literally trying to salvage both her career and her life. She’s using the last little bit of money to try to study some of the birds affected by an oil spill- yes I live here and can attest to it’s aftermath- and she somehow finds herself down in the BFE’s- let’s say that’s Cajun talk for middle of nowhere and it’s unabbreviated term is inappropriate lol! She lands herself in Zack Prejean’s yard begging for a rental boat and a guide. Let’s just say she has no idea how much her life will change because of this. Though Faith is struggling to regain her normalcy, you can tell she is goal oriented, cares about her career and the wildlife it contains, and is sweet and easy going. You will also learn she’s strong, brave, loyal, and can handle a gun lol I like her a lot! I hope we get to see more of her one day!

Zack, well, he may be a HAWT piece but he’s got a chip on his shoulder. He may be back home to help his father but he doesn’t want to be there and he’s making sure everyone knows about it. He’s so rude to Faith partly because of this chip and partly because he’s attracted to her. His rudeness is also halted by Faith who also won’t be bullied. Giggle! Zack is family oriented, he’s definitely a hard worker, and when he believes in something, he’ll go above and beyond to prove it! Maybe he has a HAWT cousin for me 🙂

there’s also some very interesting side characters, a really great little plot twist, and a wonderful lesson that sometimes love really is enough!! Ooooh and there’s a new little twist on the supernatural elements in here and I LOVE THEM!!! I want some more 🙂 gimme gimme! Also, I just happen to obsessively love this author and her mad ninja writing skills! She’ll make you forget you’re reading a short story and transport you to a place not to far from me and my hometown… Yes I can talk to you about eating gator and shrimping lol!! So with that, I won’t spoil the surprise and I’ll keep it simple with a WONDERFULLY ROMANTIC 5 WOLF PAWS, cuz I don’t wanna tell you what is really clawing it’s way around 🙂

paw main

Charming Review!

I totally have a new FAVORITE series that I will be stalking forever now!!!! It’s majorly awesome and I need to show you some goodies!

Charming (Pax Arcana, #1)

Charming (Pax Arcana #1)

John Charming isn’t your average Prince… He comes from a line of Charmings — an illustrious family of dragon slayers, witch-finders and killers dating back to before the fall of Rome. Trained by a modern day version of the Knights Templar, monster hunters who have updated their methods from chainmail and crossbows to kevlar and shotguns, he was one of the best. That is — until he became the abomination the Knights were sworn to hunt.

That was a lifetime ago. Now, he tends bar under an assumed name in rural Virginia and leads a peaceful, quiet life. One that shouldn’t change just because a vampire and a blonde walked into his bar… Right?

My Review:
YES! I LOVED IT! So, I love a good fairy tale and all, but this is the fairy tale twisted, gone wrong, and having to go through life with a little curse instead of the HEA. It’s so awesome 🙂 This is your normal world, except the Pax Arcana is like the shield that keeps us humans from seeing all those big bads that walk among us. We have a Prince Charming, which we find out that it’s a family tree not just one dude. And this Charming is named John Charming. He’s also the abnormal Charming of the group. He’s a mix-ling, but I won’t tell you what, other than the fact that it’s awesome. LOL And John’s been on the run from the other Charmings who would love to kill him for being that abnormal. And now, let the rollercoaster ride begin!
Our main character is John, who starts off with a little arrogant, slightly cocky swagger that might make you think twice about him being a cool character, BUT I loved him. He’s willing to put himself in danger to help others he doesn’t even know, even those who may want to hurt and kill him. He’s also on the hunt for some monsters with some other monster hunters, which is unheard of, because of the Charming genetic tree.  I also think he’s loyal, and brave, and quite funny, and though he makes some bad choices, he still has some honor. He definitely has me intrigued and I look forward to so very much from him in the future.
The secondary characters made this one as much awesome as the main character. I loved Molly. Molly used to be a priest, but now she’s like the wielder of the mother of all holy things, and you’ll have to listen to her explain it as to why she is now a hunter and not a priest. She’s very cool. Cahill is also the very human detective who helps out the team as the team also helps him solve his cases. The pot smoking, exterminating, Choo who just makes me giggle. I also am not a fan of some of the monster hunters. They are just ugh! And Sig, I have so much to say about her, but I won’t… no spoilers, but I expect a whoooooole lot in the future!
The writing is well done. Not only as the first of a series, it reads like a skilled writer who has been writing for forever. I am still so surprised that this concept could be such a great spin. The plot twist at the end, and the character that’s going to “change” I mean I can’t wait to see how this is going to play out. And I have so many thoughts about what might happen and what could be. I know it’s also going to surprise the hell out of me, because this one definitely surprised me so much!
There is ONLY ONE reason that this book is not getting a 5 PAW review….. And that would be because those damn vampires from Louisiana had the most GOD AWFUL ACCENT!!!! Seriously, could you people who want to write about Louisiana people just call me… I talk a lot, and I can prove that not only do we not talk like that, AT ALL, like almost the New Orleans, meets Texas drawl, meet something unholy. Seriously. My grandparents are from the serious South, like born where you can’t get there except by boat- yes I’m serious- and THEY DON’T TALK LIKE THAT! *sigh* I absolutely loved this book, but I seriously said some very inappropriate naughty words when I read the vampers dialogue…. those Southern Louisiana vampers…. UGH! AND, seriously, does anybody really talk like that, ever? If it were for a little fight, I would have had to make sure each of those vampires who spoke so terrible met a very horrible end…. HINT HINT, stop making us sound uneducated and like we’ve lost our brains and teeth. LOL Yes I know, so very many authors do that, not just this one.  I just had to make it know that I was not, nor will I ever be, ok with that accent. Ok, rant over, I am back to loving this book! Other than that little snaffoo, it’s an excellent story. It’s got a very fresh, all new concept, with a great plot twist, and some very interesting takes on some of the lore and myths. I really hope that this book become a large, very full, long term series. There’s so much that could be done and I know the author is going to do wonderful things with it! I definitely can’t wait for more. Like GIMME GIMME GIMME MORE right now! Ok, thanks very much! LOL With that, a VERY SURPRISING, VERY CHARMING 4.5 WOLF PAWS!!!

Favorite Quote:
“I’m a mean mother-hmmnhmmnh man of God,” she informed me. “Except that I’m a woman, of course.”
“You just quoted something, didn’t you?” I asked.
“Yes, I did,” Molly agreed. She seemed calm but her heart was beating fast. “From Dusk Till Dawn. Its a vampire movie with George Clooney.”
“Is it too late to get a different priest?” Choo wondered. “Like maybe one who quotes The Bible?”

Happy Late Release Dirty Magic and a Review!

I’ve been a fan of Ms Wells for YEARS! I even got to sit in on a couple of her panels she spoke at for Authors After Dark 2012. She’s just as fantastic as I thought LOL And being this is her new series, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I loved her Sabina Kane novels so very much that I cried when it was ending! But, I am so happy to report, her new series is just as awesome, just different!! 🙂 Now let me show you!

Dirty Magic (The Prospero's War, #1)

Dirty Magic (The Prospero’s War #1)

The first in an all-new urban fantasy series by USA Todaybestseller Jaye Wells. The last thing patrol cop Kate Prospero expected to find on her nightly rounds was a werewolf covered in the blood of his latest victim. But then, she also didn’t expect that shooting him would land her in the crosshairs of a Magic Enforcement Agency task force, who wants to know why she killed their lead snitch. The more Prospero learns about the dangerous new potion the MEA is investigating, the more she’s convinced that earning a spot on their task force is the career break she’s been wanting. But getting the assignment proves much easier than solving the case. Especially once the investigation reveals their lead suspect is the man she walked away from ten years earlier—on the same day she swore she’d never use dirty magic again.Kate Prospero’s about to learn the hard way that crossing a wizard will always get you burned, and that when it comes to magic, you should be never say never.

My Review:
What if the world changed, and instead of drug, magic potions took it’s place. You don’t need plastic surgery, theirs a potion for that. You don’t need antidepressants, or acne medicine, and hair restore, or energy drinks, or hair dye, or almost anything, because theirs a magic potion for that. Even cars are run on magic now, unless you have an old enough model that still runs on gas, which is hard to get. This is an amazing new world to live it. And what if you’re a magic maker who is very anti magic. Hehe. But seriously, with the recession and our economy, it’s an interesting way of thinking. What if? Clean magic is made by the government, dirty magic is made by regular people without the government. Sound familiar? LOL
Kate is our leading lady. She’s a cop, but she used to be the next in line to a big coven of magic makers. And her family may not let her forget it, but she will do anything she can to stay clean, and magic free, and be a good cop. She’s struggling to make amends for things she blames herself for in the past, but she’s still a great cop. And when she kills a guy who is totally freaking out on a new potion out on the streets, Kate’s world spirals. She finally gets the career break she wants, and gets to be part in the investigation with a special unit team, except, the guy she killed was an informant for them. She finally gets the backing from her cop boss, but only because he has devious ambitions and doesn’t care if he uses her to do it. And this new potion, it turns people into werewolf like creatures that kill almost instantaneously, and are really hard to kill. And an old flame from the family coven comes back to haunt her, as he’s just surrounded by suspicion with this investigation.
There’s some great side characters! Kate has custody of her little brother, who is a typical teenage boy. Their parents died, and Kate has done everything to try to keep them together. Her brother is both annoyingly stubborn, and innocently naive. It’s quite a relationship he and Kate have. Agent Drew Morales is HAWT, gruff, could be potential for a lover, can be quite an ass, but is a great agent. He’s Kate’s new partner. Mez is the units wizard extraordinary as he handles all the magic making and also forensics. Agent Gardner is in charge of the unit and she’s bad ass! I loved her. She doesn’t play. And then there’s John Volos, her past, her ex, and her both saving grace and biggest downfall. Oh boy, I have a feeling things are going to get really crazy coming up. And BaBa, and Little Man, I will not tell you who they are, just know they are AWESOME! There’s some great writing here. And not just a great plot, but some smaller plots that are great. Like a working single young woman, who is raising her little brother alone, and how to juggle life. Or, with addicts, and having friends and a support system, like AA but with potions and magic. And her hilariously horny old little neighbor pointing out that there’s a different between enjoying and abusing things, just like alcohol, a drink  can be good but all the time is a no no. So not only do you get some great fantasy time, but you also get to see some wonderful real life things that make this new series so much MORE! This is a gritty, hard core, eye opening wonderful start to a new series! I am so very in for the next book, please give me more more more!!! 5 ASS KICKING, JAW DROPPING, CONNIVING WOLFY PAWS!

Salt (Salt, #1)

Salt (Salt #1)

Penelope is a witch, part of a secret society protecting humans from demon attacks. But when she was a child, a demon killed her parents—and stole her magic. Since then, she’s been pretending to be something she’s not, using her sister’s magic to hide her own loss, to prevent being sent away. When she’s finally given the chance to join the elite demon-hunting force, Penelope thinks that will finally change. With her sister’s help, she can squeeze through the tests and get access to the information she needs to find “her” demon. To take back what was stolen.

Then she meets Carter. He’s cute, smart, and she can borrow his magic, too. He knows her secret—but he also has one of his own.

Suddenly, Penelope’s impossible quest becomes far more complicated. Because Carter’s not telling her everything, and it’s starting to seem like the demons have their own agenda…and they’re far too interested in her.

My Review:
Ok, so what if you’re a witch and your powers don’t work….. Like, seriously, you have to borrow some of that magic from your family. AND what happens when you have to hide THAT particular detail because it could not only get you in trouble but your family as well. Yeah, it’s a little crazy, which is what made this story so damn awesome! This one is interesting, as you go through school just like normal teens, but then you have to go through testing to not only measure your power, but to become a prominent part of the witch community. Let’s just say that our main character may have decided that Harry Potter had it easy and she has no idea what she’s gotten herself into 🙂
Penelope, aka Pen, though she doesn’t like to be called that, is your normal girl. She lives with her grandparents and her sister because their parents got killed…. And they are all witches. Except Pen’s powers got taken from her by the demon who killed her parents. She has spent every waking hour since then trying to figure out how to get her powers back from said demon. She is willing to risk her life, and her family’s, to go through a very rigorous testing to become and enforcer which will help her track the demon who stole her powers and get them back. Well, she has some things coming to her. Pen is smart, and tough, and though she lacked some of those things we like to think of as consequences, after the end of this book, she is going to think long and hard before she makes rash, life threatening decisions. I liked her. She’s funny, she’s entertaining, and though she isn’t such a good liar, she does try to protect those she loves.
And then there’s Carter, yeah he’s HAWT! Carter’s little secret about who he really is will make your jaw drop. It made Pen’s and it definitely made mine. I wasn’t expecting THAT particular outcome. Carter just poofs into Pen’s life when something drastic happens and she’s very uncomfortable around him… until she isn’t because she’s starting to like him. It’s actually quite cute. And he somehow keeps saving her butt! I loved the whole salt concept. It’s the best form of protection, and it works so well. It’s pretty simple, yet can be so devastating. The demon concept of this story is definitely a page turner. It’s one thing to be a witch, who lost her powers, but to have to fight your way through demons to find the demon who took your power. Very cool. I also very much enjoyed the writing style. I really really can’t wait for more of this series! It’s a fresh, new, and inviting way to look into the world of witches and demons. And I totally hope that with that ending, more answers come forth, and Carter and Pen don’t get themselves killed in the process! 🙂 5 MAGICAL SALTY PAWS!!

About the Author!
Danielle Ellison
Danielle Ellison is from a small town in West Virginia. She spent her childhood pretending to fly and talking to imaginary friends. When she grew up, she finally flew away (in an airplane) and started traveling the world. She hasn’t stopped yet, but someday she may decide to settle in one place. Her real life friends would definitely like that; they would probably also like if she stopped talking to her characters out loud. SALT comes out in January 2014, and then it’s sequel. In October 2014, FOLLOW ME THROUGH DARKNESS (book one of the BOUNDLESS Trilogy) comes out. She’s got a busy few years!

Thanks so much to Entangled Publishing and NetGalley for this one! I have found a new series I love!!! I hope you guys check it out too! Happy reading and later gators!

Trinkets (etc) book cover

Blurb:  Three months ago, I lost my foster sister, Sienna, to the darkness. As in blood magic and chaos and general mayhem. No one saw it until it was too late, but I should have. Now, I have a wounded heart and soul that I can’t even reveal to anyone around me, because I’m supposed to hate Sienna with the fiery passion of the justified. And I do. I just wish I didn’t feel so lost without her, so unsure of the path I thought I had carved for myself, and so outclassed by the powerful Adepts constantly by my side these days. I’m not even sure if they’re with me for my own protection or because my shiny new powers are rare and valuable. Assuming I ever figure out who or what I am, and how my magic actually works.
Even chocolate can’t save the day every time … just most of the time. At least I’ve got that going for me.

Book 1:

Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic (The Dowser, #1)

Blurb:  If you’d asked me a week ago, I would have told you that the best cupcakes were dark chocolate with chocolate cream cheese icing, that dancing in a crowd of magic wielders — the Adept — was better than sex, and that my life was peaceful and uneventful. Just the way I liked it.

That’s what twenty-three years in the magical backwater of Vancouver will get you — a completely skewed sense of reality. Because when the dead werewolves started showing up, it all unraveled … except for the cupcake part. That’s a universal truth.

Note: This 68,000 word urban fantasy is the first book of the Dowser Series by author Meghan Ciana Doidge.

My Review for book 1:

I will say it one more time- I LOVE THIS AUTHOR! She writes about so many things, and yet I still love each and every one of them. I seriously loved this one. I happen to LOVE cupcakes, even though I don’t like chocolate. LOL yes, yes, I KNOW… *gasp* hahahaha it’s ok. There is a lovely little bakery, owned by a sweet, normal-ish woman, and boy is her world thrown into chaos when a damn vamper shows up, and the fun begins 🙂 Not only is it full of action, and great story lines, it’s hilarious.

So Jade is your main character. She comes from a family of witches, strong ones. Her grandmother raised her, her mom was always away, and she has an adopted sister that means more to her than anything, except maybe her cupcake shop.  I think Jade started out strong, but grew stronger, but not in a way that you may think. She originally stood up for herself, her only weaknesses being her cupcakes and her sister. And then, she meets a vampire, and then she meets a werewolf, and then she figures out that there’s something seriously crazy going on. People are dying, horribly, with her very own handcrafted jewelry that she likes to call trinkets. She feels obligated to help out, especially since everyone thinks it’s her… And to prove that, she’s got to find out who is killing them, except she didn’t bargain for who the killer was. She definitely wasn’t prepared to learn all those secrets, and she totally was out of her league when she learns about her own magic, and how much she really has.

OOOOOOOOH, I will say that the bad guy had me, really. I had suspicion, but damn that was a whammy. And the HAWT male piece floating around here, get ready to fan yourself. BUT don’t get your hopes up on her getting one of those smokin hot guys, things are CRAZY! There are some excellent plot twists, and I absolutely can’t wait to see what’s going to happen. I was so entertained, I was captivated, and then I craved cupcakes for like ever, and still don’t feel like I got good ones like in the book LOL Plus, who wouldn’t want a cupcake when you’re surrounded by vampires, and witches, and werewolves… OH MY! LOL oh, and the dead people… and the necromancers.

I definitely look forward to more. I normally say how nice things were, but seriously. The world building is excellent, because it’s real. It’s a normal Vancouver town, with real places, that just happen to support supernatural creatures without the humans knowing about it. And it’s done so well. The writing is excellent as always…. Ms. M, maybe you can mess up one time, so I can change my sentence from “IT’S AWESOME”… to maybe “JUST WOW!” LOL Seriously well done! 5 CUPCAKE FILLED MAGICALLY DELICIOUSLY YUMMY PAWS!!!

paw mainpaw mainpaw mainpaw mainpaw main

My Review for book 2:

SERIOUUSLY! ok, so I immediately emailed the author, and told her I read the last sentence and said OMG!!! LOL this is one soooooo good. I thought I loved the first one, but I am in LUST, LOVE, and total OBSESSION with book two! YES! I would recommend reading book one first, as you’ll think Jade is some crazy chick, which she is, but she has reason. LOL AND you’ll get to read all about her yummy cupcakes, and HAWT pieces, and crazy family. It’s the best!

Jade is now trying to figure out her magic, her place in the supernatural world, who her father is, and what the hell she is supposed to do with herself. Not to mention, she is surrounded by people who she wants to trust, but isn’t sure if she should, and then when an unexpected visitor shows up and plops herself right in the middle of the chaos, things get out of hand. The vampire wants to use her to find more magical people. The werewolf… I think he just maybe wants to “use her”- and dude I’m all for that- as they a debt to each other. Her mom and grandma, well they have been hiding so very much from her, for so long, that I don’t know if I’d be as nice to them as she is. She also just wants to survive, now that she is on the “radar” of some supernaturals.

Jade is no longer just a simple witch, she’s a dowser, she can literally find magic, and know about it. She can do thinks no one else can, including make magic, not just use it, but literally put magic into things that aren’t magical. Jade is making new friends, and new enemies. She is having a hard time coping with some things that happened in book one, and she’s trying to help out the family of one of the “bad guys”. She has a lot going on. BUT… Kandy is still my second favorite character. You see a little bit of her in book one, but now you are getting to know her. I LOVE her. Kett is the damn vamper that I just wanna smack a little bit. I still think he is going to be bad news, and it’s going to blow Jade’s mind. And Mr werewolf McGrowly… he is HAWT… I want him. And I hope is also isn’t going to seriously hurt Jade.  I hope that Jade learns to stand up for herself again, because I think she is letting too many walk on her in her quest to find out about her powers. Hell, I’d be throwing fire balls at people LOL

The ending…. I don’t know what to say. I am still a little shocked. Like, WOAH BABY!!! This ending is totally rocking, and I can’t wait, REALLY CAN’T WAIT for so much more! I am always grateful to read anything by this author. She is magnificent. GIMME GIMME GIMME MORE! But when her best friend goes missing Halloween night, Beth knows it’s up to her to find out what happened.

Her quest will take her on an odyssey through the crumbling city of New Harbor, Connecticut. My Review:
I really liked this one. It’s perfect when you need an edge-of-your-set, totally unpredictable, slightly horror sided story with some awesome characters to keep you riveted.  This one slightly blew my mind. I was thinking that it was going to be the worst, saddest ending, you know, those movies you watch where everyone sacrifices themselves to save the world. Yeah, I was expecting something along those lines. AND it’s pretty damn close. I will say if you are a little sqeemish, maybe take care, but it’s not bad, because I totally LOVED it! Also, I will keep with the part horror because it’s pretty close to making my toes quake 🙂 AND the vampers are the bad guys which is totally awesome for me!
The vamps are not your typical vampires in here, maybe that’s why they intrigued me. You know, a common thing about vamps is their glamour in all stories. Well, except in here, their glamour doesn’t make they pretty, it makes YOU see what YOU think is pretty. It’s totally mind blowing! It totally made for a very hard time for the good guys to work around this. I mean think about trying to kill 5 vampires, and they ALL look identical to your loved one. Holy shit right! Seriously, I was totally freaking out with this one.
Jack is our vampire hunter/killer, and because of his very tragic meeting with one, he’s had nothing but ridding the world of these horrid creatures. I like Jack, he’s so damn serious that I wanna slap him a little, and Beth finally gets him to smile. And best of all, a dog won his heart 🙂 He’s also very creative with kill kill methods. Totally smart guy, good looking, and a savior who never wants credit. He takes in the dog who saves his life, and even when he’s totally against having other people help him, they can die, he lets Beth help him after she proves she won’t go away anyways 🙂
Beth made me giggle. She starts out so damn hard core. She’s almost mean. She really is a bitch and she’s ok with that, except to the people who matter to her. She really freaks out when her roommate and best friend goes missing on Halloween night and starts trying to track her down. Her boyfriend is kind of creepy, and though she is a little cold to him, I don’t think I would have dated him in the first place. And then he too goes missing. And then comes back for her as a monster. Beth really does freak out, but I finally liked her when she was freaking out. She seems a little more real. AND she tries very hard to deal and cope with what she is learning about the world. She’s stronger than she knew, plus she can kick some ass!
This one is one fantastic, CREEPTASTIC, blast of paranormal horror! I am really really hoping that though this book has an ending, that little opening at the end means there will be more to come. I would very much like some more, with Jack and Beth, and the totally awesome doggie! 🙂 5 HORROR-RIFFIC CREEPTASTIC VAMPIRE KILLING PAWS!

My Review:

I was hooked from book one! And now, book two is not only great, it’s exceeding my expectations and making me wait for book three is pretty much killing me!! Anna is captured at the end of book one, and starting in this one, you see who has her, where he has her, why he has her, and what he plans on doing with her. Let’s just say the creeptastic factor has just sky rocketed. WOAH. AND, everyone back at home is scrambling to try to figure out a way to get her out.  This one is also written a little different. Since Anna is captured, you can’t know what’s going on, so you still get Anna’s first person POV, but you also get a third person POV from the others at home. I think this made for an interesting take. Stupid Micah stealing Anna away has made this little interesting change very intriguing.

Anna is learning to fight really hard, for her life, for her survival, and just outright for her. And Martello, Janie and Kristy are all doing their parts at home to try to help find ways to find Anna. Roman and Valen are now almost outright fighting for Anna’s attentions. Micah is just creepy. He’s definitely scary and I want to run away, quickly, with large steps. And as Anna learns more about herself, her love life, it’s quite complicated, and it’s only going to get worse, things are spiraling into somethings awesomely crazy!

I just can’t talk about the guys right now. I mean, Micah may think he’s in the running, if only by force, but I just want him to die…. Valen and Roman, well now that’s a whole new set of wine glasses. I like them both, one more than the other, but I won’t say anything, as you just need to read this one on your own 🙂

This one is maybe a little slower in the beginning as you are learning as Anna is about her kidnapping, but once things start up, you will need a seat belt to hold on to your seat. It is way fast paced and if I can just say, HOLY SHIT BATMAN-HOW YOU GUNNA LEAVE ME LIKE THAT AGAIN!!!! There is another, very epic, mouth opening, jaw dropping, pee on yourself cliff hanger. If you aren’t a fan of cliff hangers, this one may kill you. I’m so very impressed! A GREAT, PHENOMENAL, WHIRLWIND RIDING 5 PAWS!!

Savor Blog Tour W Giveaway!

Savor TOUR  January 6th – February 6th

Hello everyone! I have something extra special for you guys today 🙂 Let me show you some goodies!

Savor (Vicious Feast, #1)

Savor by Kate Evangelista

Genre: New Adult

Publisher: Crescent Moon Press

Mature and explicit content. Not recommended for readers below 18-years-old. Yup, you’ve got to be that old to read my story. Consider yourself warned.

I’m Dakota Collins, a tough talking, eye patch wearing, workaholic photography student. Why am I important? Well, maybe because I get to spend an entire month with Vicious, only the sickest indie rock band out there.

You see, I needed a subject for my Spring Showcase introspective in order to graduate. During a chance encounter at a club I’d been sent to cover for the Daily Gossip, our ironically named college paper, the features writer I usually teamed up with introduced me to the band—by accident, I might add. It involved a run in with a scary, bald bodyguard. Anyway, long story short, I signed a contract to take pictures of Vicious.

I should have known their handsome yet way too serious for his own good bassist, Luka Visraya, wouldn’t be able to keep his hands to himself. He’s gorgeous and all, but the way he smiles spelled trouble with a capital L. I’m in for a long month with him around.

Crazy shit happens and then some. So, if you want the skinny on Vicious and the events revolving around my stay at Lunar Manor, read my story.

Again, refer to the warning above.

“Dakota Collins!”

I lowered my camera. The use of my full name never came with good consequences. I blinked my vision back at her even if I wanted to spend the rest of the night taking his picture. Sweat rose over my upper lip. I may just have found my subject for the Spring Showcase.

            The only problem?

I had to find a way to convince him to be in my project. Something told me this wouldn’t be easy. By the way my heart beat in my ears, drowning out the music and Silvia having a fit in front of me, I wanted it too much. I wanted him too much.

“This the guy you were saying?” I showed Silvia the picture I’d taken. This seemed to pacify her because she sidled closer, mesmerized like a moth to a flame.

“Luka Visraya,” she said with a moan like she’d just tasted the most luscious chocolate before taking a long gulp of her cocktail. The name didn’t register. Silvia must have noticed my blank expression because she continued. “He’s the bassist for Vicious.”

Still no pings of recognition in my head.

She slapped her thigh. “Where have you been? It’s weird that you haven’t heard of them. Their songs are on the radio like every second.”

Of course I hadn’t heard of them. I liked listening to country and I hardly kept up with current events.

“Name one?” Okay, I had a name. Luka. Exotic. A bassist. Part of a band I should know about. So he’s famous. I slowly felt my chances of asking him to be my subject slip from my grasp. If he was someone famous, fat chance he’d say yes to a graduating photography student like me. I just about deflated when Silvia mentioned one of their songs. “Oh, I know that one!” By accident. It played in the radio of the cab I rode in to Sacrifice. I stared at the picture of him then lifted my gaze to where he sat. “He’s gone.”

“What?” Silvia whipped around in time to come face to face with a wall of man. “Whoa!” She pushed at him. “Watch it, buddy!”

“Give me the camera,” he said in a threatening tone.

Big. Beefy. Bald. The three Bs that made up the quintessential bodyguard.

I clutched my DSLR closer to my chest and looked up at him with my good eye. “And why would I do that?” The patch didn’t seem to intimidate him because he just reached out. So much for my Bond villain aspirations. I moved away from his grubby hand. No one touched my camera but me.

Despite her size, Silvia came between me and the mountain. “We’re here to cover Sacrifice for our college paper. You don’t have the right to take away my colleague’s camera.”

Yeah! You give it to him, Silvy.

Not that I couldn’t take care of myself. But if Silvia wanted to play hero, I wouldn’t stand in her way.

“What seems to be the problem here?” a soft, authoritative voice chimed in.

The bodyguard moved aside to reveal the Gothic Lolita. She stood at just about the same height as Silvia, but she possessed an older aura even if she seemed to be our age.

“She’s been taking pictures,” Baldy said.

Lolita’s kohl eyes landed on me then shifted to my camera.

“As I was saying to the big guy,” Silvia explained. “My colleague and I are covering the opening of Sacrifice.”

“For what paper?” Lolita asked without taking her eyes off me. I clutched my camera like an extra appendage. In some ways it was. After losing half my sight, I relied on my camera like an extra eye, seeing the world through its lens. I would rather die than lose it.

“The Daily Gossip,” I said before Silvia could answer just to relieve some of the awkward tension building in me under her gaze. “We study at Wexler U.”

She tilted her head, crossing her arms.

“Okay,” I quickly stammered out. “I get that the name of our paper sounds like a tabloid, but the Daily Gossip is a cool campus paper.” The last part maybe only I believed since Silvia raised her eyebrow at me, but Lolita and the mountain didn’t have to know that.

No one spoke after that. Even in a noisy club, the silence in our group rang in my ears. Not waiting for the situation to get any more awkward, I plowed forward with my own selfish intensions.

“You know Luka.” I said it more as a statement, but it came out like a question.

            Lolita nodded.

“I’m Dakota Collins and I’m graduating this spring. I was wondering if Luka would be interested in—”

“What would I be interested in?” a smooth voice joined our group.

The walls of my throat closed, chocking the rest of what I had to say. All eyes turned to Luka. Silvia dropped her empty glass. It bounced off the bodyguard’s shoe and landed in a clatter but didn’t break. Even with my height, I still had to look up at him.

“What are you doing here?” Lolita admonished. “You should be backstage.”

One side of his lips came up. God. Without the scowl, his face lit up. I had to stop the urge to lift my camera and start snapping away. And his eyes were piercing blue. The kind that stretched over my mother’s farm in the summer. Damn.

Seeing him up close, I knew I’d give any one of my kidneys for a chance to take his picture in a formal shoot.

“We have five minutes. Chill, Yana.” He tugged at one of her pigtails.

“Luka,” Silvia managed. “I’m a big fan. Will you sign my chest?”

Bypassing my petite colleague, Luka’s intensely blue gaze studied me. He reached out and I flinched back. His fingers almost grazed my patch. What the hell was the matter with him? Trying to touch my eye patch was tantamount to poking a bandage over a wound and asking the person if it hurts.

Gothic Lolita—Yana—yanked Luka’s arm down. “I’m so sorry!” Her whole aura changed. She went from all business to panicky. “My brother sometimes forgets his manners. He didn’t mean anything about touching your…” She bit her lower lip, maybe trying to keep herself from saying the wrong thing.

That little faux pas cleared my head of the Luka haze and spurred me into action. “Luka, will you let me take your picture for my final project?” I didn’t know where my courage came from, but I knew if I didn’t take this chance, I’d regret it. I had to have him as my subject.

Still not removing his gaze from my face, like my patch transfixed him, he tilted his head to one side very much like his sister did earlier.

“Luka, don’t!” Yana said, but from the consideration on Luka’s face, she was too late.

            “You’re a photographer?”

“Yes.” I nodded, in case the word wasn’t enough.

“And you’d like me to be the subject of your project?”

God yes! This time, I could only nod. I didn’t want him to see how eager I was. And I couldn’t live with myself if I embarrassed myself further.

            I waited with baited breath.

It seemed everyone in our group waited with baited breath for what the golden god had to say about my brazen request. I soon realized when Luka spoke, everyone listened. The way he pronounced every word precisely yet still spoke so smoothly, like butter on warm toast, captured everyone’s attention. To say he captivated us was an understatement. Something in me certainly wanted to hear him keep speaking. He could read from an accounting textbook in that voice and no one would get bored.

“I need to know that you’re good,” he finally said.

Something about his words seemed to hold a different meaning. I must have missed the alcohol in the soda Silvia had given me. Maybe I was drunk and this was all a blackout dream.

“What are you saying?” Yana faced Luka all the way now, her petite form all rigid.

He unleashed a full on megawatt smile my way. I almost had to cover my eye from it. At my side, Silvia gasped. Her long nails dug into my arm. Like staring at the sun, I couldn’t take my gaze away from him no matter how bad it was for me.

“We’re about to perform. I want you to take several pictures then send them to Yana. If she approves, we’ll see about your request.”

Then, like smoke, he disappeared into the crowd.

My Review:

I’m going to start off with a gasp moment… I have not read Taste yet… Yes I know I am missing out, I actually purchased it and haven’t read it yet. I promise after reading this book, I will now be reading it sooner rather than later! 🙂 I also need to say I fanatically love this cover! But anyways. When a photographer student meets the hawt, mega rock star, let’s just say sparks fly. This was a fantastic read! Dakota is a wonderful character to follow and I love that she loves photography- it’s a big hobby of mine 🙂 So, as a student, she gets to take pictures of Vicious, the band everyone drooling over! HA She really didn’t realize when she asked the band to let her take their pictures for her project that she’s be thrown into a whole new world!

Dakota is very cool. She’s strong, she’s stubborn, she’s independent. She is ok with taking care of herself. And then Luka, the bassist of the band, throws her for a loop, but I’ll come back to him. Dakota has the whole eye patch thing down to sex appeal. Yes she may have some issues, scars, but she’s not going to let that get in her way. She’s also a lot more vulnerable on the inside than she’ll ever let on.

Luka is complicated. I mean, he’s not your typical HAWT piece, and I’m still a little conflicted with some things, but I am hoping that the next book is going to help me with that. And he’s a little bit crazy, and possessive, and very sexy, but still scary LOL I can’t say more that that because I won’t spoil anything but I’m intrigued and I want a little more, maybe so I can just make up my mind 🙂

The ending is going to rock your world! And I will say, I expected the supernatural part of the book to show up much sooner. I wasn’t really sure what was going on, and it probably woulda helped if I’d read Taste BEFORE Savor LOL And WOW, the writing was just as good as every other fan has ever stated. I shouldn’t have waited this long to pick up a book by Ms E. I am now a big fan! Well done! A CRAZY, CREEPTASTIC, JAW DROPPING 4.5 PAWS!

The Wind Whisperer

The Wind Whisperer Cover

At fifteen, Anaii is the most important member of her tribe—and the most mysterious. Ever since Anaii can remember, the spirits of the wind have whispered of fertile hunting grounds and imminent enemy attacks. But when her people are ambushed by a brother clan without any apparent cause, the spirits remain eerily silent.
As the village prepares to retaliate, Anaii is pressured by her best friend, Elan, to marry him. It’s an old plea—Elan has spent a lifetime loving her, but Anaii only sees a childhood playmate out of an imposing warrior. Stifled by Elan’s insistence, Anaii escapes into the forest where she meets Jayttin, the beautiful son of the enemy chief.
Enamored by Jayttin’s carefree spirit and hope for peace, she repeatedly sneaks away to be with him, but when her deception is discovered, Elan is devastated. Pledging his lifelong affection, Elan gives her a passionate kiss, and Anaii begins to see her friend in a new light.
While Anaii is tormented over which man she must choose, the wind whispers of a new threat that could destroy both tribes. Only a union will afford a chance at survival, but the reality of that union is based on one thing—which man Anaii chooses to die.

I looked around cautiously before freezing at the sketchy outline of a muscular man partially hidden in the grass.  A man!  He was sprawled on his back and golden pink from too many hours in the sun.  My heart pounded to see the unfamiliar pattern of a deer on his breechcloth.  I had marched myself directly into the reach of a Zennite warrior!

I gingerly took a step backwards, but to my horror, the man’s black eyes fluttered open.  I turned and hurled myself back across the meadow, just as the man shot up and flew after me like a predatory bird.  My muscles burned and strained to lengthen the space between us, but getting away was hopeless.  I was not a challenge to even the young boys in the foot races.

After a few powerful strides, the warrior tackled me to the ground, painfully grazing the skin on my cheek.  I wheezed a few times before my lungs filled with air.

“A Chippoke?” he asked between breaths.

I feverishly punched and kicked to free myself.  “Get—off—me!”

“Stop! I’m not going to hurt you,” the warrior chuckled as he struggled to pin my arms and legs.  His voice was calm and pleasant, but lying was no different than breathing to a Zennite.

“I cannot promise the same,” I wheezed as I fought.

“You’re a bobcat,” he said with a laugh.  “A bobcat with no teeth or claws.”

“Let me go!”

“I will when you’re calm.”

Strong hands held my wrists while his full weight pinned my torso against the earth.  Fighting him was as useless as running.  “You are not a boy,” I spat angrily, fully taking in my attacker.  It was little comfort that he didn’t look like a bloodthirsty killer.  He was admittedly handsome with an angular face and sleek black hair that hung well past his shoulders.  He was not as tall as Elan, but his muscles were narrow and built for speed.  There was something different about his eyes too.  They were as black as soot—very unlike the brown woodsy colors from our tribe.

The warrior smirked down at me.  “My mother will be very surprised to hear that.  All this time she’s assumed…”

My face heated, but I fiercely met his gaze.  The Zenni were like wild dogs and pumas—they could smell emotions. “What I meant was, you are a man, not a boy.”

“Oh, I see, but you must understand, I’m not a man yet.”

“You must understand I’m a squirrel!  Get off!  You’re hurting me!” I ordered with a useless heave.

“No,” he said with a smirk.

It was then I realized I might die—right after I was lulled into a false sense of security.  My chest pounded as I searched for the killer’s weapon.  “Are you going to kill me?”

“I do not feel like killing you just yet,” he said as his long hair swirled in my face.  Were we to play a game before he killed me?

“I am glad the mood doesn’t strike you,” I snarled.  The warrior studied me with a drawn brow.  Was he guessing that I was the forest witch?  I didn’t think I looked like a witch, but I wasn’t certain what one should look like—evil at least.

“I don’t understand something,” the warrior said.  “Your eyes are blue—the blue of an angry sky.  Are you the daughter of a god?”

“Yes,” I said, heaving against his weight again.  “Now get off me, or my father Achak will strike you dead with lightening.”

Author Guest Post:

Pick Your Weapon: Romance or Love

Chew on this a moment: nearly 49% of all paperback book sales are romance. These are those books where the main plot is for two people to romantically connect. This leaves science fiction, mystery, chick lit, and every other fictional sub-genre in the dust. I don’t know about you, but this tells me a lot about the human spirit.  Humans crave love and romance.

Still, there seems to be a stigma to romance novels that includes cheesy covers, steroidal looking men, and helpless women with an abundance of creamy white cleavage.  Oh, and then there’s the “naughty” aspect of traditional romance that requires reading in private.  When’s the last time you saw someone openly reading a Harlequin romance novel at the airport?

Maybe romance doesn’t have to include throbbing groins and the Scottish highlands. Many reviewers stick up their noses to traditional romance but have no problem reading young adult “romance” or books that are romance but secretly labeled as something else. Water for Elephants is just one example.  This little jewel of a novel is officially listed as a historical novel, but most readers will agree that the main focus of the story is for Jacob to find his way to Marlena, the beautiful animal tamer who changes his life.

As an author I have a hard time categorizing what it is I write and admit that I cringe a little at labeling myself a romance author. Unfortunately bookstores require that all books be filed under neat little titles. I’ve heard some authors call it a literary straight jacket. At the risk of offending anybody, the last thing I want people to think of when they read a Krista Holle novel is quivering body parts and expected story lines. Perhaps I’ll start my own genre and call it: Love Stories with a Twist.

This new genre will include complicated plots and sub-plots that extend outside of girl meeting boy.  It will be heart pounding and tense but leave the graphic sex scenes behind. Love Stories with a Twist will be filled with adventure, angst, and mystery.  What you will not find is: corsets, creamy white cleavage, dukes, lords, ladies, swords, and shirtless Fabio look-alikes.

While it’s true that a good many of us crave love and romance, some of us just want to leave the cheesy behind.  So pick your weapon now: romance or love.  The market is filled with plenty of books to satisfy what you’re looking for.  Just be warned—it might not be catalogued right.

Why let a little thing like dying get in the way of a good time?

Thirty-six-year-old Irene Dunphy didn’t plan on dying any time soon, but that’s exactly what happens when she makes the mistake of getting behind the wheel after a night bar-hopping with friends. She finds herself stranded on earth as a ghost, where the food has no taste, the alcohol doesn’t get you drunk, and the sex…well, let’s just say “don’t bother.” To make matters worse, the only person who can see her—courtesy of a book he found in his school library—is a fourteen-year-old boy genius obsessed with the afterlife.
This sounds suspiciously like hell to Irene, so she prepares to strike out for the Great Beyond. The only problem is that, while this side has exorcism, ghost repellents, and soul devouring demons, the other side has three-headed hell hounds, final judgment, and eternal torment. If only there was a third option…

She wasn’t sure what to do next. The house seemed quiet and still—in fact, almost dead. She listened hard. She couldn’t quite put her finger on it, but somehow the house, her house, seemed foreign and strange. The house seemed to be holding its breath, almost as if it was waiting for something. She felt the thick, gathered pause pushing around her. Irene shivered. She crossed her upper arms, trying to smooth away the sudden goose bumps. How could she get goose bumps if she was dead?
The phone rang, causing her to jump. Her drink crashed to the floor. She stared at the phone stupidly for a moment, and then, recognizing LaRayne’s phone number on the caller I.D., she grabbed the receiver.
“Yes! It’s me!” Relief flooded through her. LaRayne could hear her!
There was a pause and then LaRayne said, “Hello?”
“LaRayne? Can you hear me?”
“Hello? Irene?”
Relief fizzled away. Disappointment washed over her, so strong her knees buckled and she grabbed the counter for support.
The line went dead. LaRayne had hung up.
Slowly, Irene replaced the receiver, numb with shock.
The phone rang again. Irene let the answering machine pick up this time.
“Hey, Irene. It’s LaRayne…I’ve left you some messages…well…you know…call or whatever.”
Irene cleaned up the spilled drink, sweeping the broken glass into a dustpan and dumping it in to the trash, and then mixed herself another one. She wandered back to the hall and then back to the kitchen and finally to the living room where she dropped heavily onto the couch. She sipped her drink, not really tasting it. Then she spied her laptop across the room on a chair. She fetched it, firing it up.
Email. Yes, that’s it—email. I’ll email everyone and tell them what happened, she thought through a fog of mounting hysteria.
Even as she thought it, dully watching the computer scroll through start-up screens, the “drunk emailing” incident of a few years ago—which had led to then-boyfriend Chase becoming ex-boyfriend Chase—came to mind. The part of her that was still thinking rationally pointed out that maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to email anyone until she knew for certain what exactly was going on.
You still don’t know what you want anyone to do, she thought. Call a doctor? Perform an exorcism? What, exactly, was the remedy here?

So, if you’d like to check out the previous two times I’ve featured this book, THIS ONE has a wonderful guest post about Ms. Terri’s cat and THIS ONE has a wonderful author interview! Thanks everyone for stopping by and I hope you check this series out! 🙂 Happy reading and later gators!
