Print Length: 278 pages

Best selling author Melanie Larson’s relationship with her friend, Chloe Carpenter, is bleak. Falsely accused of murder, Chloe’s future rests in the hands of her mate, Zane Marshall, and the Pacific Pack’s purebred werewolves. In an effort to help, Melanie joins forces with the pack and soon discovers the monsters she writes about in her paranormal novels really do go bump in the night.
As Chloe struggles with legal troubles, an unwanted blood bond with a master vampire, and a reunion with her mate, Melanie untangles the attention of multiple supernatural suitors determined to claim her as their own. Strangely attracted to a brazen vampire, she must decide if the blurred line between passion and pain is worth crossing.
Werewolves, vampires, and fae royalty race to unearth an ancient artifact with the power to extend their existence. Can Chloe and Melanie restore their friendship in time to stop magical mayhem from ruining everything they’ve worked so hard to redeem?
Free at last from my cell, I continued to avoid Agent Green and his search team by crouching in a stairwell across the street from the jail. Still unable to reach out and signal anyone mentally, I’d discovered another talent that Zane hadn’t mentioned, or one he didn’t have or was unaware of. I was able to hide myself with invisibility.
Minutes before, I’d burst through my cell’s window with a rush of grace and power not belonging to the clumsy human me. The first thing freedom offered was the sound of footsteps.
One of the local officers was taking a smoke break. With my heightened senses, I could hear his every action. Inhale, exhale. Cough. Pace. Then the cycle would repeat.
Scared to move, I’d stood stiffly with my fur blowing in the breeze, the saline ocean scent overwhelming my senses, and for a brief moment overpowering the offensive smoke smell.
I was dismayed to discover nothing nearby to camouflage my presence. The minute the officer finished his smoke break and started around the corner, I prepared to bolt across the field into the forest beyond. Only problem, I was positive he’d mention seeing a humungous white wolf, leading to questions I didn’t want asked, let alone answered.
Without understanding why, the ridiculous urge to stay still and picture myself invisible overcame all others. Not sure what else to do, I obeyed the prompting and hoped for another magical miracle. Sure enough, and to my utter amazement, the officer walked right by, puffing away on cigarette number two.
That same sixth sense was now advising me to run, warning me I couldn’t maintain this particular power for long.
I had decided then to dash across the street and down into the stairwell behind Sam’s Market, where I remained. It was a good thing I’d listened to my inner voice as I became corporeal the minute I was out of sight. The whole thing reminded me of what had transpired during the final showdown with Jazmine and Logan.
That night, after receiving the mating mark, my original animal telepathy talents had multiplied, giving me a whole new arsenal of supernatural weapons. James McQuillen, one of the Indian Elders serving on the Pacific Pack’s Casino Chain’s Board of Directors, had suggested the likelihood of Zane and me exhibiting never-before-seen gifts as a result of our unlikely joining. No one like me had ever mated with a werewolf, and a human-werewolf mating was almost unheard of to begin with. Add in my unusual abilities and anything was bound to happen. Today my wolf form had somehow reignited a few of my former abilities along with some awesome new ones, proving his prediction accurate.
Movement in the jail parking lot caught my attention. Relief flooded through me as I spotted Zane, Misty, and the two M’s talking to my best friend ever, Melanie Larson. I was surprised she’d rushed to my aid. We’d been out of touch for a while. I’d have done the same, though. BFF’s like Melanie only came once in a lifetime. As much as I missed my friend, my attention was drawn back to Zane. He was so close. His hair, dark and dense, was pulled back. I wanted to release it from its leather tie and run my fingers through the thickness. I could smell his unique scent from across the street. We’d only been apart for a few days, but it felt like a lifetime.
I needed my mate, my man. Now.
Unsure about crossing the street, I scanned the area. It was still early, but tourists were already out exploring the open shops and enjoying coffee at a few sidewalk cafes. I was confident that a huge wolf crossing the street would cause panic, which would signal Agent Green. He’d stormed into the station, but I understood the danger he posed should he reemerge.
Preparing to go invisible, I was stunned to see Melanie now cocooned in Zane’s arms in what appeared to be a very intimate embrace. The others had moved away, and Zane was stroking her back with one of the same hands that had given me such pleasure.
A rumble started deep in my chest and rose to my throat. Jealousy laced rage exploded through me making it almost impossible not to attack. The only thing keeping me hidden was Agent Green’s sudden appearance outside the front door.
I wished I could hear what my husband and supposed friend were discussing. In response to the thought, my ears crackled and then popped. I was shocked by the onslaught of sounds that followed. What I’d heard behind the jail had been just a precursor. Conversations from every direction now assailed me.
Shaking my massive head, I struggled to control this latest ability. Honing in on the one conversation I cared about was near impossible, making it difficult to catch every word.
Zane said something about “keeping it quiet.”
Melanie: “I can’t help how I feel.”
Zane: “I understand. I feel the same.”
Melanie: “What do we do now?”
If that wasn’t enough, they locked eyes, lost in each other.
I wanted to throw up, but my wolf form had other ideas. My fur puffed out and my growl grew deeper and more feral. My lips receded, revealing my sharp canines. These things happened beyond my human control. Clearly the wolf was now in charge and her emotions were more extreme than my own. The human in me wanted to puke and cry. The wolf-me wanted to rip out Melanie’s throat. For some senseless reason, I blamed her for whatever was transpiring between them. My love for Zane overpowered all reason.
He. Is. Mine.
No longer able to hold back the wolf, I lunged.
Icy arms yanked me back, trapping me in the stairwell. I fought to free myself from the vampire’s iron grip. One hand was clamped around my muzzle keeping me from releasing a snarl and sinking my teeth into his cold flesh. How I knew it was a vampire, I couldn’t say; I just did. And this particular vampire was stronger than me, a lot stronger.
“Chloe, precious she-wolf, ease up. Relax. I’m here to help you. Though you could have avoided this heartache had you chosen me to begin with.”
Valamir—it was his arms securing me, keeping me from doing something I was bound to regret later.
“There, I’ve got you. I won’t let you go. If you went out there now, Agent Green would have you exactly where he wants you, behind bars again. I don’t want you there, and I’m sure you’d prefer to stay on the outside. No one but me knows you’re a wolf. A lovely wolf, I might add.” He scratched behind my ears.
I couldn’t ignore how good his fingers felt. Pet me, I thought, wishing he could hear me.
“Of course I’ll pet you, darling.” His hand stroked my lush fur while his other arm kept me secure against him. I felt myself calming beneath his expert touch, tension fleeing. Had he heard my mental request?
I did indeed, he responded into my mind, confirming the impossible.
Fate had played another cruel trick. I was unable to communicate telepathically with my werewolf family, but I could with the one vampire who knew exactly how to entice me, and who I owed an irrevocable favor. He was surely here to collect like the devil collected the souls of his pathetic prey at the mystical crossroads. No wonder he’d stopped my almost assault. He needed me. He wanted me to pay up for his previous good deed. His act of so-called kindness—with a price tag—had helped us defeat a monster. Depending what he asked of me, death to the deplorable demon might have been preferable.
“Pet, we need to go. It’s getting brighter. I may be old, but I’m still not a big fan of daylight. Not to mention your werewolf buddies and the agent. Someone is bound to sense your presence if we linger.”
I hated to admit; he was right. Zane should have already detected me from this distance. Maybe he was still too distracted. I lifted my gaze. His arm was draped around Melanie’s shoulder. Misty and the two M’s had rejoined them.
Two things happened at once, three, actually. A gust of wind swept the area like a broom, sweeping off one man’s hat, lifting dirt and sand from the streets and spinning it wildly, all while causing more than a few women to scream about their windblown hair. Agent Green was stomping toward Zane who had turned in my direction and was sniffing the air.
It was about time he noticed my scent, though the fact I was a wolf might have delayed the process.
Melanie had lost his favor, for the moment anyway. His head whipped from side to side as he scanned the street seeking my location. Distracted by my closeness, Agent Green was able to approach without Zane’s knowledge, grabbing him roughly by the shoulder. Zane spun, shaking off his hand, and shoved him. Mack, Michael, and Misty circled. Zane reached for our enemy. The air shimmered around the werewolves. I waited for the inevitable change.
An unmarked car, tires squealing, pulled into the lot. Detective Davis, and a man so gorgeous he made my eyes hurt, leapt from the car. The detective rushed to separate Zane and Agent Green, while the man, who I believed was supernatural—no one who looked like that could be human—strode to the gathering crowd of onlookers. He didn’t say a word. Instead he lifted a hand. For a moment nothing happened, and then everyone dispersed. Just like that. Laughing and talking they went back to whatever they’d been doing before the altercation at the police station.
“Damn pretentious Fae,” Valamir disparaged.
Fae? I remembered Zane telling me that the faery race was second in supremacy only to the angelic forces. So far, I’d yet to meet a full-blooded fae. My closest encounter had been with David and his cloaked, part-fae crusaders.
Questions bombarded my mind, but before I could press Valamir for answers, we were teleporting. My possibly unfaithful husband, probable ex-best friend, and the chaos of PlumBeach vanished in a rush of silver and shadows. The agony of having my heart stomped on traveled right along with me. There was no cure for the searing pain. If what I suspected was true, I’d make sure Zane and Melanie suffered. The bitch in me was back with renewed vengeance, and she was ready to bite.
Well, Chloe’s in trouble again and there’s a ton of HAWT male pieces and some new friends as well as some not so nice bad guys!! Yep we’re in for some more excellent fun and another wild ride! I just love this series! There’s so much to offer, tons of supernatural beings, fantastic mysteries, excellent plot twists and some damn fine eye candy! LOL
Chloe is falsely imprisoned, her best friend runs to her aid but is whisked away by vampires, her mate is trying to find her and keep a war from starting… It’s complicated. And though you get both Chloe and Melanie’s POVs, this one is a little more about Mel, as she’s meeting some new beings that she only thought were real in her fictional writing. She’s also learning that the myths she was using to create her fictional characters are a little off. And she’s got some learning about herself to do. And Mel has a sarcastic side just like Chloe, they aren’t only best friends in name 🙂
there’s plenty of dudes too! Zane, the two Ms, alcuin, valamir, David, the princes of Fae, the stupid agent green, and so much more! Each have their own roles to play and a side to pick. Boy oh boy is it steamy on here!!
The writing is spectacular! I already loved book one, but I may love book two almost more! This one kept me on edge and had me captivated the entire time! I’m seriously a fan, but I’m also seriously dying for book three now!! I can’t wait for more 🙂 a well written, completely invigorating, full of man candy, and steamy romance, and excellent myths, with lots of supernatural characters- what more could you ask for in a great paranormal read!! 5 MAGNIFICENT HAWT PAWS!!!

About the Author:
Like most authors, Carol Van Atta is no stranger to the written word. She penned a short novel at age 12 (somewhat frightening illustrations included, and lots of bunnies were involved), and had a creative writing piece published in her high school newspaper (about David Bowie’s Diamond Dogs LP). Yes, she’s an ex-80’s chick.
Devouring books from numerous genres, Carol developed a deep thirst/hunger for more reading material, and could almost always be found with her nose in a book.
She has contributed to several popular inspirational anthologies and devotional books, and lives in the rainy wetland of Oregon with a terrifying teen (another in college) and a small zoo of animals. She is taking an undetermined hiatus away from inspirational writing to delve into her darker side. (Though you can check out her latest spiritual suspense novel, Soul Defenders). It is rumored that this genre-jumping occurred after Carol discovered too suspicious red marks on her neck, and experienced an unquenchable urge to howl at the moon.
