When Alexis James arrives at her first assignment in months, she anticipates the danger and violence rife in her calling as a Lycan Hunter. What she doesn’t expect is a handsome, blue-eyed wolf saving her life and kidnapping her. Surrounded by the enemy, Alexis must not only survive her prisoners but the bonds of a different sort that begin to form against her will.

Mikko Kyran was chosen by the gods to lead his pack, and he has made it his mission to end the eight thousand years of war plaguing his people. The Alpha never suspected that the key to the prophecy ending the Forever War would be held by a smart-mouthed, sexy Hunter determined to kill him.

Can two people from different worlds set aside everything they know about one another long enough to survive retribution from the Hunters, the pack, and the gods? Or will their differences start a war that neither can win?

Written with intensity and depth, The Lycan Hunter is the first in a thrilling new series.

Excerpt

Alexis stood outside of the small, weathered hotel room she’d reserved and scanned the horizon. She’d made it to Nowheresville, North Carolina without a single Hunter sighting. Granted, it had taken her three days to make it here, but that had more to do with the ridiculous amount of energy she spent to stay away from heavily populated areas, avoiding the areas that she remembered had past issues with Lycans, and trying to be mindful of her healing stomach.

She sighed and went back inside to stare at the horror-movie-ugly tropical wallpaper and depressing furniture. All of it needed to be updated. One look at the front desk clerk/owner, and Alexis had known that the man’s beaten body wasn’t capable nor did it care for things like twenty first century amenities. The room was missing a shiny new flat screen mounted on the wall or nice faux marble counter tops in the bathroom. The only TV she had to watch was a turn knob set that, when she checked, only had three channels. The bathroom was a beach- bungalow-don’t. Overall, the décor was a clusterfuck of stuff that didn’t make sense. The depressed beach atmosphere was at odds with the fact that the hotel was over a hundred miles away from any beach. Maybe it was to remind the guests of where they really wanted to be.

She collapsed on the well-worn bed and thought of her next move. She needed to turn in her rental and get a new one sometime soon. Over the next few days, she would have to make it to New York, and eventually she would make her way to Ireland. Flying to Ireland would be both cheaper and faster, but taking a cruise would give her some time to decompress.

Ireland was the perfect place to go. Very few Lycans lived there, and Hunters never stayed for long durations. Alexis was sure that Ireland was one of the few places where she would be able to relax a little until Kyran pulled together whatever he was trying to do. That was her plan, despite knowing that when the war did come to an end she wouldn’t be around to appreciate it.

She was just getting comfortable when there was a knock at her door. She drew her weapon and glanced through the peephole. It was the front desk clerk. She cracked the door as far as the slip chain would allow. It was a flimsy defense, but paranoia and overzealous defenses would keep her alive.

“Yes?”

“Hi, ma’am. I just wanted to check and make sure you were cool enough. These old AC units don’t work as well as they should sometimes.”

“Yes, I’m fine. Thank you.”

“Well, if you need anything feel free to let me know.”

“Thanks, will do. Goodnight.”

She closed the door, slid the deadlock in place, and went over to the backpack Ronan had given her before she left. He had tried to give her his credit card, but she refused. She didn’t need a way for anyone to track her, but she also carried cash – a hundred grand –on her at all times. That paranoia and knowledge that her parents had been gunning for her death for years made carrying cash a necessity.

Fifteen minutes later, she had finished cleaning, oiling and reloading her guns when another knock sounded at the door. This time the clerk wanted to know if she had enough towels. Ten minutes later, she answered it to have him give her info on the local area. Another knock sounded and Alexis rose from the bed and stashed away any hopes that she would get a restful night’s sleep.

“Yes?” she asked.

“I’m sorry, but I wanted to warn you that the local sheriff just called to say there is a bear wandering around. He is notorious for rummaging near city limits.”

“Thanks. I think I’ll be okay.”

“Well, I don’t know if you are licensed to carry, but just remember to shoot as fast as you are accurate.”

“I’ll remember that.”

She tried to keep the shock off of her face as he told her some information on the continental breakfast she could get in the morning before he excused himself back to the front office. She closed the door on his latest interruption and began packing up her cleaning supplies.

She wasn’t staying for breakfast. If the décor was any indication, she might die from ingesting it. Not to mention the fact that there was something up with the clerk.

No hotel, at least not one this unloved, would allow its clerks to be so overly attentive. She felt like he was checking on her. Whoever he was he knew the mantra about how to shoot that Torin had taught her. Was it possible that the old man just happened to know it? Yes, but she wouldn’t take any chances.

Alexis tensed as a soft rustling brought her attention from slipping on her holster. There was a slight chance that the sound came from the room adjacent to hers, but walls weren’t that thin. Were they? She shook her head, because from what she remembered, there had only been one other car in the parking lot, and it was in front of one of the rooms towards the other end of the lot. The only logical place the sound could come from would be from the back of the hotel where a tree-lined field was located.

She rolled to the floor as silently as she could, keeping her body below the low lying window. It wouldn’t matter if whoever was outside had infrared, but she had to assume that they didn’t.

She grabbed her bag and slung the straps over her shoulders just as two shots fired.

The rounds entered low on the wall and buried themselves in Sheetrock next to her.

Shit, high powered rifles with barrel silencers. Fan-fucking-tastic.

 My Review

I love werewolves. They are always going to be my favorite supernatural character. I love it even more when they are totally cool, and have this awesome background 🙂 This is the story of the star crossed lovers, kinda, who kill each other’s kind, who happen to fall for each other. But, think more like Hunger Games type environment of kill or be killed, with extreme military training for the hunters, and some very HAWT wolves! Serious action, not so Romeo and Juliet, but it can be sweet, in between the death threats LOL I loved it!

So Alexis is our lovely lady hunter. She had totally sucky parents. Seriously, I hope they die horribly soon! Anyways, she is, from birth, trained to do nothing but kill lycans aka werewolves. She has never been shown love, or affection, or hell, cartoons for that matter. She is also taught that she is insignificant and defective by her peers and parents. She has a crappy life, until she is wounded quite badly and saved by a lycan. She still tries to kill him when he saves her. LOL It’s ok, she misses. However, he seems to save her a lot in the story. Alexis is very strong, very independent, she has one of the highest kill counts in the hunters. And yet, she totally gets sentimental when she’s finally shown decency. She is always seeming to get hurt, probably because she literally throws herself into battle. She even saves the enemy, who maybe isn’t the enemy after all. I liked her character. I wanted to hug her alot. I’m glad things worked out like they did.

Kyran, aka Ky, is the HAWT piece. LOL He’s the alpha of his pack, and all he wants to do is have peace between the hunters and the shapeshifters. They’ve been at war for thousands of years, and he wants it over. He will do anything, even go above and beyond to befriend a hunter to try to make this happen. Said Hunter happens to be Alexis, who still wants to kill him, and yet, he’s in over his head because he can’t help his attraction to her. Kyran is so sweet, having the more affectionate upbringing. He has a totally awesome brother, Ronan. AND I am so happy to say that I’ve found two men who are good enough in their confidence to show each other their feeling without being sappy. YES! They had some of the best parts of the story. Ky is a total catch, man of your dreams, droolworth main character. GIMME ONE! LOL And things are about to get really crazy for him!

There’s an astounding amount of really good side characters in here! Ronan, Ky’s brother and second, Marce- I’ve shortened her name cuz I forget how to spell it LOL-, Jillian, Trinity, some of the bad guys, Torin-he’s pretty awesome- and Lykil-the very awesome God of Destruction. I love LOVE his character. All of these characters, as well as the mains, were so well written. Look I even remembered their names without reference. They just stuck because I liked them. I love when you enjoy the whole thing, not just parts of a book.

Let talk about world building. I love the new spin on who and what shapeshifters are and how they became. I love the tension between the hunters and the shapeshifter. You can seriously feel it. I am totally all in for all the wonderful action that was in this book. I kept feeling like I should be ducking bullets or fielding bombs, or dodging punches. It’s also very much an emotional ride because Alexis learns to be a whole new person, with emotions attached, while there are just some seriously devastating moments! All I can say is…. PLEASE GIMME GIMME MORE! REALLY! PLEASE! I know there has to be something, because it’s really coming now, but I need something! LOL a WONDERFUL, DEVELOPING, ENGAGING, WOLFY 5 PAWS!!

First, tell me a little about your book
J….Author Interview

The Lycan Hunter is a story of meddlesome gods and a prophecy that Kyran wants to fulfill. Toss in a Hunter bent on the destruction of his people and you’ve got problems. To make matters worse that Hunter is an emotionally hardened woman, but she’s also his Soul’s Mate, his one true love.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated or did you always just know?

I started writing poetry at the age of 13 when my English teacher had us do a poetry anthology. I still have that anthology. I was an awful poet.

What inspired you to write your first book and what was it?

I started writing as a personal challenge. Up until I sat down to write a novel, I wrote mostly free verse poetry.

Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

Although I wish I knew some of these people, the characters are their own. I can’t say that they don’t have at least a little bit of me, but I believe every author leaves a little of their soul in their books. As for the events, the novel was inspired by a song by Within Temptation called The Howling.

How do you chose when/which characters die in your books?

I only kill people based on what is best for the story. This generally means that character’s story has ended. Some deaths may seem frivolous to readers but anyone I kill permanently is in the best interest of the overall story.  Yes that permanently is there for a reason 🙂

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

New authors are always grabbing my attention. My TBR pile grows constantly with new authors to try out.

Who do you look up to as a writer?

I find myself humbled by authors who tell great stories, who are true to their craft and their audience.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your book?

I think the plight of any writer is that we worry that we should have done something differently no matter how well a book turns out. It could be something simple like a name change, but I think we all worry that we should have made that one small change. I have to be content that I did the best that I could and grow from there.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

I’m not an overly emotional person, so emotional intimacy makes me itch. Odd considering I write romance, but I work on it every time I write that closeness between characters.

What book are you reading now? Or what genre?

Currently I’m reading The Godspeaker Trilogy by Karen Miller which is a fantasy novel.

Who designed the cover? And do you help with them?

Greg Simanson designed my cover. That’s one of the great things about being at Booktrope. I have a say in the cover design, which I’m glad I did. I love what Greg was able to do once I finally came up with a concept that I liked.

Did you learn anything from writing your books and what was it?

What I learned didn’t necessarily happen in The Lycan Hunter, but in one that I wrote shortly after finishing The Lycan Hunter. No one can accept you if you are not willing to first accept yourself, flaws and all.

If you could be one of your characters, who would you chose?

I think I would gladly walk in most of my character’s shoes for a day or so, but if I had to choose today, I’d pick Trinity. She’s a minor character, but she has my dream kitchen and I want to make something extravagant today.

Are there any books you think some of us should read, just because?

I’d suggest The Dragon Kin series by G.A.Aiken and The Marnie Baranuik Files by A.J. Aalto. Both of them make me laugh and fulfill my need for paranormal activity.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Thank you so much! I love hearing from you and being reminded why I do it in the first place.

About the Author:

Kelsey Jordan is the author of The Lycan Hunter, the first book in her Gardinian World series. Though she has a preference for all things paranormal and romantic, Kelsey admits she just writes what her muse demands of her. It’s less painful that way. When she isn’t enjoying the momentary benefits of playing god to the many characters that live in her head, she can usually be found curled up with a book, killing something in a video game, or spending time with her family. At some point in the day she is probably drinking more than her recommended dose of coffee, but don’t tell her that. She doesn’t care about recommended servings.

As a Texas native and self-described Air Force brat, Kelsey now lives in Georgia with her husband and their tutu-wearing minion. Book 2 and 3 of the series will be published by Booktrope Editions late Summer/Fall 2014.

Book Description:

Kyran of the Blue Ridge Pack has spent most of his life searching for an end to the Forever War. Finding a Hunter among their greatly diminished ranks who was willing to forgo their “shoot first” mentality was harder than it seemed. Then fate–or the gods–gifted him with Alexis James, a petite Hunter with a nasty habit for killing his kind and a need for his surgical skills.

Alexis only has two wishes in life: make it through her next assignment, or die a relatively quick death. With a heart hardened by miserable circumstances and painful memories, her view of kindness and common decency was marred by scars of swift retribution.  So when the blue-eyed Lycan saw fit to save her life, she wondered: At what cost?

After eight thousand years of war, the end is becoming a reality, but is the possibility of peace worth Kyran’s soul and possibly Alexis’ life?

Author Interview:

WELCOME! First, tell me a little about your book ….

The book was inspired by Within Temptation’s song Howling, which is where the idea of the Hunters spawned. The concept of the Lycans came flooding in later and my focus shifted to include prophecies and gods and the Forever War.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated or did you always just know?

I started writing poetry at thirteen to deal with all the things I couldn’t readily articulate to those around me. My focus shifted to writing novels in 2007.

What inspired you to write your first book and what was it?

My first book spawned from a question I had about a vampire series I’d been reading at the time. I couldn’t get the solution I’d come up with out of my head, so I sat down and wrote it.

Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

Most of the events or experiences in the book aren’t based on a particular person or event. I did have to tap my friend’s experience in the military to get some of Alexis’ training and reactions to be more authentic. Trust me it was bad beforehand.

How do you choose when/which characters die in your books?

First, let me say how much I love this question, because I really do love this question. Second, I kill people off because their death means something to the world, whether that be good or ill depends on the character, but it has to mean something. Some deaths may seem frivolous to readers but anyone I kill permanently is for a reason.  Yes that permanently is there for a reason 🙂

YES IT IS! AND I love that answer!! Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

Seriously?! You don’t want that list. It’s really long, like my TBR pile.

Who do you look up to as a writer?

Wow! Who don’t I look up to? The easiest answer is the authors out there that are doing it right, the ones that are being true to their craft and making awesome books.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your book?

I could worry forever about the things I didn’t get quite right. I think if I did it all over again the things that I would change would be on the publishing side, which had to do with things I learned the hard way.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Finding time to write all of the books I have outlined is my primary challenge. Well, that and keeping my muse from tossing her every creative thought at me.

What book are you reading now? Or what genre?

I’m always reading something of a paranormal nature. Paranormal romance tends to be where I pick up most of my books, the latest being Healing the Hunter by K.C. Taylor.

Who designed the cover? And do you help with them?

Actually I designed my cover. I’m working on the concept of my second cover, but I might have to ask someone else to do it due to time constraints for the next book.

WELL DONE! I love the cover! Did you learn anything from writing your books and what was it?

I learned how important it is to finish the story and that when the story is finished to let it go. Never try to force more out of it than is actually there.

If you could be one of your characters, who would you chose?

I think I would choose to be Nigel. He isn’t around too much, but I like him.

Wait I liked him too… Hello HAWT, nerdy, scary bad ass hunter 🙂 Are there any books you think some of us should read, just because?

I’ll keep it two series…okay three. For those who like erotica, I’d say give Abigail Barnette’s The Boss series. For paranormal romance I say try the Marnie Baranuik Files by A.J. Aalto and the Dragon Kin series by G.A. Aiken.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

I am truly grateful for each one of you. Seriously, you guys rock! I appreciate your support more than you know.

PLEASE come back soon! Please write more of this series! AND I should have said this first, THANK YOU for coming!

Now listen, I do give out a lot of 4 and 5 PAWS, BUT, I can’t list them all, and though I would love to list a ton, I can’t LOL And I figured since these are the ones that stick out in my head, they should be the ones to go up! So, Please PLEASE, don’t think these are the only ones I loved 🙂 AND if you did happen to be see your book here -high five!!! I’m also reading several books right now, and they need reviews LOL so that also didn’t help that I couldn’t get my stuff together. Now, let’s get to the giveaway!

I’ve told you my favorites, now I WANT TO KNOW YOURS! First, tell me if you’ve read or want to read any of these listed-or if you see one and want to start from the beginning that counts as I read a lot of series. SECOND- tell me what YOU want to read. I will pick one winner, and that winner will receive ONE of the books I’ve listed (or the first of the series, whichever) AND ONE book of their own choice. It’ll be Nook or Kindle, since I’ll be making this international OR if it’s easier and my winner is international maybe the book depository. 🙂 Make sure you leave a good email in the form you fill out to leave the comment, no need to leave your email in the actual comment so you don’t get spammed. So, happy holidays. I’ll leave mine running for a week or so, that way you get it in time for Christmas, or whichever holiday you celebrate OR the New Year if you don’t do those other ones 🙂

Happy reading and later gators!
