Short Excerpt:

I took the first book off the stack and examined the cover. It was titled Vampires throughout History. The cover was leather and so old it was stiff and cracked in spots. The pages showed signs of age too, yellowing and stiff to the touch. There was no table of contents, so it looked like I was going to have to scan the entire book for what I was wanting. I flipped the pages carefully, so as not to tear any of them.

After an hour of scanning and about half way through the book, I found something referring to vampire children.

Although extremely rare, the natural-born offspring of vampires exist throughout the world. These rare beings are called the dhampir. Dhampir are usually the product of a vampire and mortal. The most common of these unions is a male vampire impregnating a mortal woman. Vampires, both male and female, are seductive in nature and some mortals came willingly to these unions. However, the majority of dhampir born were produced through an act of rape.

Solitary by nature, it is uncommon for a vampire to settle with any one mate for long. The children of vampires, the dhampir, more often than not exhibit all the characteristics of their vampire parent. The strength, speed and agility are the usual hereditary traits that the children develop. They are not always born with these traits but develop them as they grow into adulthood.

The dhampir are day walkers. Some of these children are sensitive to the sunlight but will not perish in the direct rays. Most have no sensitivity at all. Drinking the fresh blood of mortals is also not usually required of the dhampir; however, some have a liking for it. Very few actually need it to survive.

Most dhampir are rejected by the vampire species because of their mortality and weaknesses. Mortals often reject the dhampir, as well, due to their vampirism, so they frequently remain outcast.

Dhampir are known for becoming vampire killers. Their closeness to the vampires and their vampire characteristics make them powerful vampire hunters. The unique ability to track and kill vampires is specific to only the dhampir and the mythological race of vampire hunters.

Historically, dhampir became vampire hunters as a trade. Towns and villages became plagued by vampires who were terrorizing their homes and killing their people. The dhampir accepted contracts in exchange for monetary payment and used their likeness to their vampire counterparts to exterminate the vampires.

Holy crap, that was a lot to process. The more I read the passages, the more I understood that my being a hunter was more than my heritage; it was my history and my future. Everything about my bloodlines had hunters involved.

Author Bio:

Jennifer Malone Wright

Jennifer Malone Wright resides in the beautiful mountains of northern Idaho with her husband and five children. Between the craziness of taking care of her children, whose ages range from fourteen all the way down to six months, and being a homemaker, Jennifer has little time left for herself. The time she does have left, usually leading far into the night, is spent working on freelance work or her beloved fiction.

When she grew up, Jennifer always had her nose in a book. She has been writing stories and poems since grade school. This love of the written word and her strong interest in the paranormal is what has led to her first novel “The Birth of Jaiden.”

In addition to being a mother and homemaker, Jennifer is also a very proud military wife. Moving around the country for the last ten years has made her a bit of a nomad and she finds it difficult to be in one place for too long.

Jennifer is also the author of The Birth of Jaiden, a paranormal novel filled with action, suspense, and even a love story.

And now I’d like to welcome the author over for an…

Author Interview

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated or did you always just know?

I don’t know when the interest actually originated. But, I do know that I don’t really remember a time when I didn’t want to write. There was this one time that I wrote a story in school and our teacher let us make books out of them with cardboard and pretty wall paper. I begged the teacher to let me put the book in the library, so she took me to the library and we spoke with the librarian and she let me put it in the library! Who knows, it might still be there. It was called, “The three princesses.” lol

What inspired you to write your first book and what was it?

My first book was that one I told you about above. Lol, no seriously, my first full length novel is called “The Birth of Jaiden” This book is about vampires and witches and angels, it was inspired by the one image in my head of a vampire finding a baby in a dumpster and taking her on as his own.

Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

To an extent, yeah. I think it’s impossible not to incorporate people you know or things that have happened to you into your writing. It will creep in there, even if your deliberately trying to keep your life out of your writing.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest or that you recommend, other than yourself of course?

Oh there are sooo many authors that I could recommend to you! But for now I will name you these and you must check them out, because they rock! Willow Cross, KB. Miller, JH Glaze, Lisa C. Morgan, LA Freed, and Christie Silvers. All wonderful authors of the paranormal!

Who do you look up to as a writer?

As a writer, I look up to those who I’ve been influenced by, like Anne Rice, Stephen King, VC Andrews, and Nora Roberts. They have been the ones who led me into my writing career and even though they will probably never know, they are a big part of why I am who I am.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your book?

Um… yeah!! And we are changing it. The Birth of Jaiden is currently under revision, basically a big re-edit. Mostly the same content, but changing a few things. I was in a hurry and even though I had paid an editor 900 dollars, I didn’t realize there were so many mistakes and grammar problems in the book. I am a story teller, not an editor. I use a developmental editor now, which helps with that stuff.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

I use a lot of run on sentences, and I pretty much suck at the self editing part. That is usually the hardest part for me. Other than that, I just try to get lost in the story and not worry about much until I am done with the first draft.

What book are you reading now? Or what genre?

Right now at this very moment I am reading “Blood Divided” by LA Freed. It is the second in “The Charleston Vampire Chronicles” It’s very good! I love this series!

Who designed the cover? And do you help with them?

My Vampire Hunter’s Daughter series covers are done by Paragraphic Designs. I don’t really help, I just tell her an idea of what I want and she nails it every time. She does amazing work.

Have you ever bought a book based on the cover?

Oh absolutely. People say don’t judge a book by its cover and I do agree with that, but I totally admit to buying a book simply because of a rockin cover.

Did you learn anything from writing your books and what was it?

I have learned so much through writing books. I learn more about the craft of writing, more about the industry, history and things I’m researching, and so much more. Learning through writing is something that never stops, there is always more to learn…always.

If you could be one of your characters, who would you chose?

I would either be Deanna from “The Birth of Jaiden” or Chloe from “The Vampire Hunter’s Daughter.” Both are strong and like to kick some butt.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

I always like to tell my readers Thank you! Without the readers, my books would not be read and they are the ones who keep us going as writers. Every download or purchase, every share, every review, every comment…it all means so much and I cannot begin to thank the readers enough.

Well, in my opinion, you’re very welcome, AND THANK YOU!!! Writers take me to a happy place, so I value them more than most, as I need that escape from real life! 🙂

And now, my review: ok, so this review is going to be a little different as I read it all together. It’s multiple books in one collection. So let me remind you- I’m not a vamp fan, most of the time- BUT I am a vamp hunter fan!! And I LOVE THIS SERIES!! What a fun twist!!

We start with Part I: this is an introduction to Chloe. A girl who watches vampires murder her mother in front of her and learns she has a grandpa and he’s a vampire hunter. She also learns the truth about her father. And she meets drew.

Part II: this is Chloe’s continuation of learning about her hunter heritage and what vampires are. She is training with Drew, has a school fight-which is both awesome and hilarious- and sees her first vampire/hunter kill. It scared the snot out of her. Chloe is growing, but not in the ways expected. She’s trying to adjust to her new life.

I really like the mythology behind the hunter heritage. And the crazy fun weapons!! By the time we hit part III, it’s on. Chloe gets some surprises, Drew is being Drew, And g-pa Luke is… Well he’s recovering. Chloe finally gets a vamp kill.

I could go on and on, but then I would give away secrets, and I hate spoilers, other than little tidbit to help get you interested in the book. The writing is flawless. The first few sentences hooked me, and then I FLEW through it. I NEEDED to know what would happen. I like how Chloe grows, slow but more real. I am a total fan for life!! I’m so happy I got to be part of this tour. I recommend you check it out. Seriously!

You can check out each book separately, I think part I may still be a freebie. But you get all 6 parts for $4.99, and that’s a deal. 4.5 PAWS from me!! /span>;

And now THE GIVEAWAY!!!! OK, I wanna know who put this up, but the giveaway is…

$100 amazon gift card!!!!

Yep you just read that right!!! Seriously good stuff!! It’s tour wide, so all you have to do is go HERE and enter via rafflecopter!! I wish I could!! LOL seriously, if any of you enter and win this, please let me know, so I can celebrate for you! I would do some serious damage with that hahahaha! So, many times over-GOOD LUCK!!!

I hope you guys enjoyed today, thanks for stopping by, and Happy Reading!!! 🙂 Later Gators!!!

Last Summer Blog Tour w Giveaway!

Hello everyone!! Today, I have the pleasure of hosting a spot for an author I love! Now heads up, this is NOT a paranormal book, but she is such a great author that I automatically said I would LOVE to help promote her new book release. I do have a fantastic GIVEAWAY for you as well! So keep reading to find out what I’ve got for you 🙂

Blurb from goodreads: All Chloe Sullivan wants to do is get through the summer. Her life has been in disarray for more than six months, and she knows the only reason her parents made one final trip to Sandy Shores is because of her. They are, after all, two seconds away from filing for divorce. When Chloe stumbles upon a boy in one of her childhood hangouts, she’s in for more than just a relaxing summer vacation.

Logan Andrews is exhausted, famished and, quite frankly, kaput. His parents kicked him out when he refused to attend a rehabilitation program for his drug addiction. Now, he wishes he would’ve listened; he’d be receiving appropriate medical care rather than living in a dingy, godforsaken shack, holing up from money-hungry drug dealers.

Logan’s godsend arrives in the form of Chloe, who can’t hold her tongue when it comes to matters of the heart. They’re both in for a rude awakening when Logan’s past catches up to them, though. Can they escape the drug dealers showing up at every twist and turn, or will things end much worse than they ever imagined?

WARNING: contains strong language, drug use, and sexual situations, including an explicit sex scene and a near-rape scene. Mature audiences only. 17+

Well, now I have to apologize that I was not able to finish for my review as I’ve had a pile up of unfortunate events, but I will not spoil this beautiful post with my bad luck. I WILL PROMISE to finish this book and post a review ASAP! The whole point was for me to review this book. So again, sometimes life totally gets in my way and I apologize!

About the Author:

Growing up, I pretended to be characters from books, movies, and TV shows (especially Xena). Now, though I don’t run around my backyard and freak out the neighbors with Xena calls and invisible weapons, I still live inside my imagination, and it’s better than reality.

I’d insert something here along the lines of living in Massachusetts or Europe (dream places to live) with my wonderful husband (who I haven’t met) and our dogs, but these things haven’t happened yet. Instead, I’ll tell you I’m an avid gamer, chocoholic, coffee addict, animal lover, and own way too many books and shoes.

Silver Moon Saga

Silver Moon (Silver Moon, #1), 308 pages – YA Urban Fantasy

For seventeen-year-old Candra Lowell, senior year is supposed to be the time of her life. It’s not supposed to include being shipped off to her aunt and uncle’s house for ‘her own good’. Whatever that means. There’s only bad news from this experience—when she learns she’ll go from human to werewolf in a few months. Complete with an inherited unique power.

At her aunt and uncle’s house, Candra is plagued with nightmares of a whispering forest and glowing eyes, and a shadowy figure, who issues a warning—she needs to leave town. Candra learns the meaning of the stalker’s warnings when she discovers she’s the new favorite target of a rival pack. She isn’t just a werewolf—she’s a werewolf in the middle of a feud that makes the Montagues and Capulets look like best friends. She’s also made a mess of things by falling for her sworn enemy. Worse, the rival pack wants the power Candra will receive on her eighteenth birthday. To protect her family and friends, Candra can’t run or hide; she must face her foes, even if it means death.

Black Moon (Silver Moon, #2), 224 pages – YA Urban Fantasy
As the rise in supernatural disturbances continually expands to more obvious locations, Candra’s family and friends are on a never-ending hunt to remove the region’s dark magic.

Greater forces are at work, though, as an accidental link is formed between Candra and Ben, “marking” their souls and coupling them forever. They can now see each other’s thoughts and speak to one another telepathically—bad news for sworn enemies.

Occults spreading across Hartford, along with Candra and Ben’s mishap, are part of a bigger plan, one that neither the Lowells nor the Conways ever saw coming. There is more than one Ancient in their midst, and these primordial beings are lying in wait until Candra inherits her power.

A power which hasn’t been seen in over five hundred years.

A power which balances one of her enemy’s.

These two powers combined can change the course of history. In order to survive a battle with the Ancients and protect their abilities, the Lowell’s and Conway’s will have to work together. Can they rise above their feud, or will they lose everything?

Nightfall Book Tour w Giveaway

Hello today! I am part of another blog tour today! This one has a cool giveaway 🙂 trust me. but first, lemme tell you a few things about the book and author, and then I’ll tell you about the giveaway! 🙂 So, let’s get this thing started!

From goodreads: Three years after everyone important to Connor Maitland was murdered by a fanatical cult he is still attempting to put his life back together. Accompanied by his ex-girlfriend and business partner, Alison Herne, he is making a living as a jack-of-all-trades running a security company, sailing charters, and even photographing weddings out of Dolliber Cove, Massachusetts. Connor’s world is finally coming back together until they find one of Alison’s ghost hunter friends murdered.

When a childhood love he thought was dead, appears on his doorstep during their investigation, Connor is forced to confront memories he convinced himself were the delusions of a man deep into grief. They are being stalked by a mysterious man who appears to know far too many of their secrets. After Alison is almost killed confronting her occult past, it is impossible for Connor to deny the connection between the cases. Someone is attempting to end Connor’s life and the lives of all those who surround him.

The crazed rantings of the murderous cult may be the key to his survival.

And here’s a little excerpt for you:

“Maitland, this is Tabitha. I know you’re not really into this stuff, but I think you might want to make an exception this time. Well, I’m out by Rockport off Old Cathedral with Camilla and Don, and I think we’ve got something for you. It’s…wait— What are—” The voice stopped. “End of new messages. If you would like to listen to your messages, press One.” An electronic beep sounded and the voicemail started again.

The taste of wet concrete and a throbbing headache made me roll onto my back and open my eyes to a dark mass overhead. It was too dark to make out anything more than vague shapes without a flashlight.

“Ow.” I managed to sit up while the wireless headset continued to repeat the voicemail in my right ear. A few feet away, my flashlight blinked at a stack of wet pallets. I reached across the concrete to retrieve the flashlight and twisted the end to get a steady beam. A quick survey of my surroundings revealed a number of pallet stacks, the red metal pipe-‐‑railing I had just hopped over, a pile of heavy rope tangled around my feet, and a low‑hanging pulley block. This is why they say you should not be fussing with your cell phone when you investigate a potentially dangerous environment.

“Crap.” I scanned the floor for my lousy phone and found it lying with its touchscreen against the corner of a pallet. I shut off the voicemail and wiped off the grime to tuck it into my gray pea coat.

I forced myself to my feet only to stagger and lean on the nearest stack of pallets. Between the weather and that pulley, I would need a heavy dose of aspirin. I shook my head to clear my mind, but the phone screamed for attention. I groaned and hit the button on my headset.

“Everything is all set for you tonight,” a woman announced from the other end with a touch of nervousness. Her again.

“All right. We’ll check into that and then hit the place this weekend.” I swept the light across the stacks of pallets. Through one of the dirty skylights, I saw a flash of lightning. Can’t the weather ever cooperate?

“I can’t thank you enough.” Her voice trembled.

“Right, see you then.” I tapped the headset and rubbed my temple. The woman had been nothing but trouble since I had agreed to help her. I was not in the mood to deal with anyone indecisive enough to keep rescheduling a project because they were terrified by what I might find. When a client is constantly rescheduling a site analysis, it means one of two things: either they couldn’t afford the work or they were afraid I might find something illegal. Either way, the job had eaten up my time and my patience. I had more important issues than a simple security analysis.

I walked around a stack of pallets, stooped down and checked the strange scratch marks in the concrete floor. I focused my light on the corroded tin-‐‑and-‐‑ wood wall ahead of me. Various bundles of rope and rusted tools hung from the exposed wall supports. Using the flashlight, I followed a taut rope to a large rowboat suspended from the rafters. Everything was damp and reeked of stale seawater. I followed the path between the stacks of pallets and stepped around the odd tool in my path. The winds rushed the structure; the walls creaked as waves crashed outside. I rounded another stack of pallets and spotted the doorway to the office. It didn’t bode well.

As I approached, my light revealed the remains of a modified digital camcorder still attached to a tripod. I knelt down to check the camera only to find that even the hard drive was smashed to bits. Completely unsalvageable. I stepped past the remains and pushed open the worn, blue door. The office was in no better shape.

The office had not been used in years, but on the far side of the room were a couple of open cases of electronics. A battery-‐powered lantern flickered on the floor and illuminated the destruction with a pale fluorescence. Clumps of old tools covered the walls, and boxes left only a narrow path to a stack of old desks under a fenced window. Pages from a spilled file folder were strewn about the floor with various electronics.

It doesn’t take a professional investigator to recognize a crime scene, but a professional knows what to look for without compromising the scene. I craned my neck to look at the top of the equipment case that had been knocked on the floor. RPS. It was Tabitha’s, all right, but where were they?

I tried to spot anything that screamed out what could have happened with their investigation. Amateur investigators are prone to panic when they take on the wrong case, but professionals like Tabitha wouldn’t just abandon thousands of dollars worth of electronics. Mixed in with the equipment were a number of ritual tools for protection that included a silver dagger, several bundles of incense, and candles. What had they attempted to protect against? I pulled out my camera and snapped a couple of pictures of the scene before I switched to video.

I shut off the camera and moved through the partially open exterior door. The winds rushed me and rippled my coat. The fresh air felt good but also unsteady with the storm that approached. Waves sloshed against the wharf on both sides under a thin mist. In the distance I could just make out a figure on the beach, rapidly moving away.

Joe is seemingly an ordinary college student. She works, studies and reads. But in between these activities Joe has a gift that promises to add a dose of color to her life at any given moment. Joe sees things before they happen. Bad things, and the worst thing she has ever faced is just around the corner. Someone is planning a massacre at the college university that Joe attends, and the only person with a hope of stopping the pyschopath is her.

Oh, the beauty of foresight. More like a curse. Joe has four days to figure out the mystery, make plans to take down the pyscho, and save the lives of people. People like you and me. Ordinary people.

sounds fantastic right!?! well, now here’s what I really think about it… 🙂

Ok, I will start off with this is a fantastic book. I think I will classify it as a dark fantasy thriller. Yes, Joe has this supernatural power, but a lot of the book is not based on fantasy. So let me ask, if you had the ability to see a terrible event in the future, would you stop it, even if you knew you would most likely die in the process, or would you save yourself and let a whole lot of other people die? Trust me it’s a hard thought, and this is not a happily ever after kinda book. I will tell you that there is death, and not all are saved. But you should expect this just from the blurb.

I will tell you that this is not a typically styled written book. It’s got multiple point of views. This of the movie crash. There are like 8 different POVs and they all intersect somehow. Now heads up, I’m gunna get slightly spoilerish. Not bad just a little. There are a few classmates, each with depressing type lives, a few classmate not so bad, a teacher, a killer and Joe, as Joe is the only POV in first person. It makes for the most unique type of story I’ve ever read. You see all these people’s life stories as the countdown goes until the shooting. A good 80% of this story is this. That didn’t make it boring, it made it suspenseful. At the literally almost end, the time has finally come and you get to see how everything plays out from each one of this character’s choices.

Joe is a unique character. I felt like I actually knew her in real life and to see how the others perceive her makes it seem more real. And she is so believable. She states in one of the first sentences that she is NOT brave or a hero, or even courageous, she’s just strange. And she’s ok with that. She’s ok with who she is. I love that about her.

And Michael, well think of a hot BUT SMART jock! Oh and he’s nice 🙂 those don’t usually exist hahaha I love his character and his outlook.

To each of the other characters, in my rule I don’t give away spoilers, I would like to say that I loved you in here. Even if I didn’t like you as a character, I liked having the insight into your brain and thought, and it also makes you think about others in life. For example, the pretty, popular girl is not always as pretty on the inside, and the very young man who went to jail for some bad choices isn’t always the horrible criminal you think. There is one character I’m very sad they died, and 2 characters I’m happy that lived. As for the other 6 characters, you’ll have to read on to find out what happens and who lives and dies and why I’m happy/sad about the end.

I’d like to say that this story wasn’t just a story for me. It was an insightful look at to just what is right and wrong and how you look at life and others is important. Try not to judge so easily. Try to make choices that are right, but maybe not so easy. I know that there weren’t any fireball throwing, spell casting, shape shifting, blood sucking fantasy delights in here, but that didn’t make the story any less heartfelt and completely enjoyable. Yes it’s dark, and sad, and very real, but I still think its a great book. I will recommend it to everyone over 13, as I think even kids should learn of the consequences of their choices. You get another 5 PAWS from me, Ms Gordon! Well done!

Absolution Book Tour Part One w Giveaway

Hello everyone! Today I am a stop on the blog tour for the book Absolution 🙂 I am happy to say that I will actually have TWO stops on this tour… Today, I will be doing a review, and an author interview, and MY GIVEAWAY!! There’s actually several giveaways, so that’s why I’ve said it this way. As always, if you click the tour banner, it will take you to the tour site, so you can see all of tour hosts and stops.   There so many good things about this book.  It’s a little hard to say so much with just a few sentences for you to get all the things about this book.  Here’s the goodreads synopsis:

In 1947, a gangster murders private investigator Raymond Adams. In 2011, he’s brought back to life for 24 hours to solve the supernatural murder of a Hollywood Adult film star.

When the son of a Pit Lord is murdered in Hollywood, the celestial beings in charge of the Four Realms ask Raymond Adams to figure who did it and find the victim’s missing soul. Without memories of his life, he accepts the case to gain eternal peace. But the job is daunting:

24 hours to nab a killer…
24 hours to find a missing soul…
24 hours to unravel the victim’s exotic private life…
24 hours to stop a plot to send the universe into chaos…

With only the help of a possessed cop and a medium, Adams must trek through a Hollywood underground filled with pornography, prostitutes, the homeless, and sadists, along with supernatural monsters. But can he solve the case when his own haunting memories keep surfacing, telling him exactly what kind of man he was in life?

Sounds so intriguing right?  It was.  It starts off with Ray in the “abstract Realm” which you can think of like Purgatory.  He isn’t at rest because he wasn’t good enough to go straight to heaven but not bad enough to go to hell, either.  He also seems to have his life’s memories missing.  He knows he’s dead, but not the other stuff.  He is then given a chance to go back to the land of the living to help solve a crime committed against one of the “people in charge”.  And so the story begins…

This is very well written.  It’s like a detective crime scene story with supernatural creatures all over.  You ride along with Mr. Adams-who in life was a private eye- and a cop, whom he has possessed with a fellow celestrial friend.  Together they are led to a strip club with a stripper who is a medium-and then she goes along for the ride, too.  Their dialog is hilarious sometimes, especially Ray, who doesn’t understand any form of technology, or slang terms, or all the new ways of life.  I really like how at the end all the characters come together for one of those big surprising twists.  No, I’m sorry, there will be no crazy cliff-hanger at the end of this one.  And no, I will not spoil it for you.

I think my favorite character may be Jenn, the stripper/medium.  First, she is whip smart, and knows how to handle her self, and isn’t afraid to use her looks and charms to get exactly what she wants.  Second, she’s feisty, and I love that.  Third, she also is part of that big ole’ twist I talked about and it’s pretty fantastic.

I must also say that the plot and weaving of the story line is pretty cool.  There’s all these different celestrial beings that want Ray to either succeed or fail for their own reasons, and some are feeding him lines and giving him clues, but they really aren’t supposed to, and then he worries about who to trust and if they really are trying to help him.  This was a fast read because nothing got boring or slow, and I would go with Adult readers as there are some graphic scenes and content.  All in all, excellent, especially if you like mystery.  4 PAWS from me 🙂

Now I would like to welcome Mr. Louis Corsair for an interview!

Louis: Maghon was sweet enough to let me take up more of her blog’s space. The only thing I can do to repay her is by answering her very interesting questions.

Maghon: Do you recall how your interest in writing originated or did you always just know?

Louis: I didn’t always know I wanted to write. I always had a large imagination, which was a coping mechanism, but it never manifested as writing until I met Mr. Cunningham, one of my teachers in high school. The first creative piece I wrote was an in-between scene in the play by Arthur Miller, The Crucible. Mr. Cunningham liked it and gave me books about writing and Taoism. That year I decided that I would someday write.

Maghon: Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

Louis: If you mean the events and characters in the novel, then they were mostly the product of my imagination. I never try to copy a person and paste them on the page. It’s impossible for one–humans are much too complex to capture with just words alone.

I know, I know, writers are taught to “write what they know.” This is somewhat limiting. I prefer to write fiction that challenges my creativity and often this means exploring taboo and controversial subject matter.

Maghon: Did you know how things were gonna play out before you finished the book or did you just write until it flowed?

Louis:  I think with genre fiction, you have to have a sense of where you are going. There is an enormous amount of planning involved, especially with a mystery. There were a ton of false starts to my novel. I mentioned to Franny that this is the second version of Absolution. The original version was only twelve hours long (if you’re familiar with the story or its premise you’ll know what this means). This helped me solidify its direction.

The longer version of the story was easier to plan. The scenes were easier to write too since I was familiar with its characters, most of them anyway. Lady Chris and Craig Deluxe were new additions.

Maghon: How did you come up with the concept of the Abstract Realm, and the “committee” leaders, etc?

Louis:  It is the curse of the modern writer to want to be original. I wanted an urban fantasy that dealt with the afterlife, but I didn’t want Angels or Demons. I was looking for a fantasy world that was cyclical.

The Process, which determines where souls go, was there in the early version of the novel and it is in line with Taoist cosmology. It helped me build a meta-nature that is not at war with itself, like Heaven and Hell and Angels and Demons often are. The four realms are part of the same cycle of existence.

Since there is no war, the celestial beings running things had to be on the same side. They are the heirs to Elohim’s will, a noble ideal that never really understood human nature or how it could influence even a powerful being like the Executor.

But I think you wanted to know about the races. They had to be similar to other races of celestial beings that dominate urban fantasies. The Angelus, the Enigma, the Enforcers, the Pit Lords are the dominant celestrials. As far as actual “race” goes, they are members of the same family of beings. They all breed here on Earth for reasons that I’ll go into later.

Maghon: How do you chose when/which characters die in your books? Especially the main character in the beginning?

Louis: In my novel, I don’t approach death the way that say, George R. R. Martin does. This is the type of fantasy where death is a portal that takes your soul to different states of being in the cycle of existence. Even when characters die and their souls go to the Collective Whole to be recycled, they continue to exist at some level within newly formed souls.

Absolution starts with the main character’s death to introduce this view of multiple levels of being. So, characters die in the book and we get to speak with some of them later and we understand that some characters who have died long ago still exist–maybe not in the best of places, but they are there. Most writers are weary of trying this (unless it’s an established series like the Dresden Files). I mean, in a typical novel what can you do to the main character in the remainder of the story that compares to their death?

But what you want to know is how I decide which characters to not use anymore. That’s trickier. A murder brings Detective Adams back into the Realm of the Living. And I wanted this to be a definite end, the end of the victim’s existence. See the problem? With my view of death, the victim’s soul would simply move onto a different state of being. The solution was that I also had to make his soul disappear. And this solution created some of the other types of characters in the novel.

Maghon:  Is this going to be a series, or have any continuations?

Absolution is the first instalment of the Elohim Trilogy. If I write future novels with Raymond Adams and Jenn and Harry, it must be as part of a new trilogy. Still, I don’t see this series going as long as the Nightside or the Harry Dresden novels have gone.

Maghon: How did you come up with the character Jenn, and did you do any research? LOL J

Louis: Oh, how I blush! I was in the army for eight years (which I’m sure some of you are tired of hearing about) and yes, my friends and I frequented nightclubs, bars, and the occasional gentlemen’s establishment.

I wrote Jenn to be the most stable character in the novel. If you notice, she doesn’t go through a story arc. Her world is very grounded in reality. But she is not perfect. I never wanted to create a female character that was perfect. I also didn’t want to write a character I would consider dating, you know, my perfect woman. I couldn’t handle Jenn or her sordid sense of humor.

Maghon: Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

Louis: There are too many to name. I am trying to rediscover William Faulkner and Hemingway. Richard Kadrey is fun (I read his first Sandman Slim book when I found out it had a similar premise to my own) and I think I’ll try Justin Gustainis. I’m also trying to find a female author to follow. After J.K. Rowling and Suzanne Collins, I’m left without alternatives.

Maghon: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your book?

Louis:  I don’t even want to think about this question. I refuse to read my novel now just because I might want to go back and redo something; this is possible when self-publishing. The less I think of the book as something that can be changed, the happier I’ll be.

But, hmmm, the title. I should have googled “absolution” and “novel” to get an appreciation for the mountain of novels that share the same name. I won’t change it though. That’s final.

Maghon: What book are you reading now? Or what genre?

Louis: I am reading The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle.  Currently, I’m trying to immerse my mind in fantasy that is surreal in nature to prepare me for the second book in the Elohim Trilogy, Ascension.

Maghon: Who designed the covers? And do you help with them? (it’s one of my favorite parts of the books)

Louis: The very gifted Timothy Lantz created my cover. Once he explained what he was trying to do–the vintage meeting the modern–I was hooked. I tried to help, but my ideas are mostly symbolic, which would have confused potential readers.

Maghon: If you could be one of your characters, who would you chose?

Louis: The victim, Giovanni. His was a different type of sacrifice, which I admire. I don’t know that I have the strength to do what he ultimately failed to do. But just to have the strength to try is admirable.

Maghon: Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Louis: I think you should get together and have a bbq. The beer’s on me.

Hehehehe, Mr. Louis has no idea how much south Louisiana kids can drink… We’ll cause him bankruptcy if he offers free beer! LOL That was a great interview-maybe I’m biased because I got to ask the questions 🙂 But I want to thank Mr. Louis because he gave up his time, and answers, to me for sharing with you 😉 and, I know you’ve all been waiting, so let’s get to the best part!

Vaempires: Revolution Blog Tour

Hello everyone!

No, I did not spell my title post wrong, nor is the book title spelled wrong. It is purposefully spelled this way. I am SO excited to be a part of this blog tour. I am also so happy to have been able to read this book, as I am not usually a vampire fan *ducks and hides*… yes I know, GASP, but sometimes vampires are repetitive and that bores me LOL HOWEVER, this book is flippin awesome, and not repetitive at all! It’s a whole new take on vampires and living with humans… let’s now get started!!

Vaempires: A white Christmas: A prelude to the Evolutionary War

If you click on the tour picture, it will take you to the blog site where all the other stops for the tour are listed-HINT: I AM NOT THE ONLY STOP WITH A GIVEAWAY 🙂 hehehehe there is your incentive to visit the other stops LOL Now, if you click on the book cover picture, it will take you to the goodreads page where my review, and the synopsis, as well as other info is there just for you 🙂 I will first begin this post with my review of the book, and a small explanation…

Ok let me see if I can explain without spoilers. Vampires and humans live in a post apocalyptic world together and vaempires are a mutated version of vampires. Hehe the vampires are the good guys and vaempires are monsters. There are two points of view- Cassie and Daniel. Cassie is the princess and Daniel is a royal guard (her guard) who happen to secretly love each other…. And the tragedy strikes!! PS you get a small glimpse of this in the prequel-no worries I’ll talk about that too 🙂

This book is not like the typical vampire books. It’s a very survivalistic, action packed, fast read. And the whole time is based on the day of the doomed attacking of the Princess’s birthday celebration. It’s very well written and makes me want to change my mind and be a vampire! I was at first reluctant, as there is always a brooding male vampire in love with a human girl, and blah, blah, blah, romance… NO!! This is not that kinda thing. After the crazy humans (yep, we are crazy and you know it) declared war (with pretty much everything, including the vampires) they launched some nuclear bombs (STUPID) which took out half the planet and killed most of the population of both humans and vampires. For those who happen to survive, they have worked out a way to all live together peacefully, or so they thought.

There are a few things that are going on, and I REALLY like the supporting characters, which you meet in the prequel, and see glimpses of in here. I am seriously hoping to see more of them. I think I have the hots for one of them, hint- it’s Ray 🙂 LOL And THAT ENDING!!! How ya gunna do that to me! I always say I’m a fan of well placed cliff hangers and THIS IS ONE- so fair warning lol I think I was a little devastated and shocked, but at the same time, I’m not… I dunno how to explain this. I will definitely be picking up book 2 as I cannot wait to see how it’s going to play out!! Will Daniel finally rescue his princess or will too many dangers keep them apart! Boy oh boy! Great one!! 5 paws

hopefully that review will entice you to check this new series out… BUT I’M NOT DONE 🙂 Let’s now go on to my character interview with Cassie 🙂 This is a killer-SO FANTASTIC!!! Check it out 🙂

This interview takes place approximately midway between Væmpires: White Christmas and Væmpires: Revolution.

Maghon: Hello everyone. I’m so excited to announce a very special guest for today’s interview—Princess Cassandra! That’s right; our very own fairy princess is sitting across from me and she’s agreed to answer everything and anything thrown her way during this segment.

Cassandra: Hey! (Laughs)

Maghon: (Also laughs) Within reason, of course. We can’t expect our future queen to divulge all the royal family’s dark secrets, can we?

Cassandra: Not without earning the grounding of a lifetime, you can’t.

Maghon: Well, all right, then; let’s get started. Princess Cassandra, good morning and welcome to Happy Tails and Tales. I can’t tell you how happy I am that you’re here.

Cassandra: Believe me, Maghon, it’s my pleasure. And, please, call me Cassie.

Maghon: Okay … Cassie it is. But only if you agree to call me Mags.

Cassandra: Done.

Maghon: I have a whole list of questions on hand, Cassie, but I’m moving off topic right away because of what you’re wearing. That jewelry is quite beautiful. Beyond beautiful, actually—more like exquisite. Red teardrop earrings and a matching pendant. They’re crystal, I assume?

Cassandra: Yes.

Maghon: Can you tell me about them?

Cassandra: Well, Mags, the jewelry was a gift. The hand-crafted pieces are meant to signify two things; the first being tears, as you noted. But the shape also signifies drops of blood. I have to admit that they are so delicate and beautiful that I’m terrified to wear them. I’m afraid I’m going to lose them or that I’ll get caught out in one of Orion’s windstorms and a strong gust will blow them away. Don’t get me wrong, I carry them with me at all times because I can’t stand having them out of my sight, but I don’t get the courage to actually wear them too often. (Laughs) That’s pretty much the whole sordid story.

Maghon: Almost, but not quite, Cassie.

Cassandra: I beg your pardon.

Maghon: Well, I’m honored that you chose to share that story with us, but I believe you left out one little detail.

Cassandra: A detail?

Maghon: Of course. You forgot to mention whom the jewelry was a gift from.

Cassandra: Uh … well—

Maghon: I assumed the gift was from your parents, Cassie, but I smell a secret in your hesitation. A gift from a suitor, perhaps?

Cassandra: A suitor?

Maghon: Yes, Cassie, a suitor. As in a person with the intention of knowing you better.

Cassandra: (Laughs) I know what a suitor is, Mags.

Maghon: Excellent. Then you can answer the question. Was the jewelry a gift from a suitor?

Cassandra: Let’s just say the gift was from someone special.

Maghon: By “someone special,” you wouldn’t happen to be referring to a certain young man from a prominent military family, would you?

Cassandra: No comment.

Maghon: (Laughs) A special someone who will remain nameless, then?

Cassandra: Yes … something like that.

Maghon: Fair enough, Cassie. For the time being. (Sighs) But now, why don’t we change topics?

Cassandra: Sure. To what?

Maghon: How about we move on to this summer’s momentous event: your sweet sixteen party! (Cheers)

Cassandra: (Laughs) Okay.

Maghon: There’s so much I could ask you, Cassie: the party details … what you’ll be wearing … who’s invited … who’ll be performing … but there’s really only one thing I want to know.

Cassandra: What’s that?

Maghon: We all know that a princess turning sixteen is allowed to ask for one special wish. Traditionally, the princess requests something related to the world-at-large. I want to know what you’re going to ask for. Specifically, given the current climate—in particular, the increased tension between humans, vampires, and væmpires—I want to know if your wish will be in any way related.

Cassandra: I’m sorry, Mags, I can’t answer that right now.

Maghon: Can’t … or won’t?

Cassandra: I can’t. The truth is that I haven’t decided yet, so I don’t know the answer to your question.

Maghon: I understand. But here’s a question you do know the answer to: where did you spend Christmas?

Cassandra: What … (nervous laugh) …what do you mean?

Maghon: C’mon Cassie. Even though every light in the house was on, everyone knows the palace was minus one royal family for the holidays. The rumor mills are running rampant with talk of secret meetings somewhere in the Americas.

Cassandra: I can’t talk about secrets of state, Mags, so you know I can neither confirm nor deny those rumors.

Maghon: Understood. But all I’m asking is where you spent Christmas.

Cassandra: Why, I spent it with my family, of course.

Maghon: (Laughs heartily). Okay, Cassie, that round goes to you. So, I’m going to be tenacious on an earlier point. The first time you wore that necklace and those earrings was at this past New Year’s party—when your family was definitely here in Orion—correct?

Cassandra: Perhaps. Probably. I can’t really say for certain.

Maghon: I can. I did some research and it turns out that those earrings and that necklace were never photographed, noticed, or even mentioned prior to that party … which would seem to strongly indicate that they were not just a gift, but a Christmas gift. Is it safe to say that?

Cassandra: Yes, it would be safe to say that.

Maghon: So … this secret meeting may or may not have taken place … but if one did, it is safe to assume that the royal guard was there, as well, is it not?

Cassandra: If a meeting occurred, then yes it is.

Maghon: And if the royal guard was there, it is safe to assume that the captain of the royal guard was there, as well, true?

Cassandra: Sure.

Maghon: And if the royal guard was there, and the captain of the royal guard was there, then it is safe to assume that the captain’s son was there, as well. Yes? After all, Daniel is second-in-command, correct?

Cassandra: I … I guess so. What I mean is yes—to both questions.

Maghon: So … and I’m just brainstorming here, mind you … it is possible that the special someone who presented you with that exquisite Christmas gift … was Daniel.

Cassandra: (Nervous laugh) That’s quite a leap of logic, Mags.

Maghon: And that’s not an answer, your highness.

Cassandra: I’m sorry. I didn’t realize you asked a question.

Maghon: You’re right; I didn’t. So, did Daniel give you the necklace and earrings?

Cassandra: No comment.

Maghon: (Exasperated laugh) Cassie, everyone in the seven provinces thinks the two of you are involved. Give me something to work with.

Cassandra: Everyone knows that our parents are best friends, Mags. Our families are understandably close. Closer than close. Daniel and I have been friends since birth. It’s never been a secret that he and I share a rare and unique relationship.

Maghon: A relationship that now extends beyond friendship?

Cassandra: No comment.

Maghon: (Growls) Oh, you’re no fun! You royals never are. Too close-mouthed. But I’m not giving up. Since you won’t tell us about your relationship with Daniel, tell us something else.

Cassandra: Like what?

Maghon: Tell us something that no one else knows about Daniel. Something juicy.

Cassandra: Mags! He’s right outside the door!

Maghon: Daniel accompanied you here?

Cassandra: He’s … guarding me.

Maghon: He’s a member of your assigned guard team?

Cassandra: Well, not really …

Maghon: Not really? He’s here on guard business, correct?

Cassandra: Yes.

Maghon: But, he’s not part of the team?

Cassandra: No. He’s alone. There is no team.

Maghon: Oh my! This is absolutely delicious! And such irony! Are you telling me that Daniel is your personal bodyguard?

Cassandra: No!

Maghon: What a wonderful shade of crimson you’ve turned, Cassie. It quite matches your necklace and earrings—the gift that may or may not have come from the young man who’s now apparently assigned with guarding our nation’s greatest asset. (Laughs) That’s quite a bit of responsibility for someone so young, don’t you think?

Cassandra: I assure you, Daniel is quite capable of handling any situation that arises.

Maghon: Wow! I won’t even touch that! But seriously, from what I’ve seen of our future captain of the guard—(whispers) and who knows, perhaps even more than that—something tells me that he is, in fact, quite capable.

Well, someone is knocking. Shall we see who it is?

Maghon: It turns out our time has been cut short as Princess Cassandra was just whisked away by her (chuckles) quite handsome young bodyguard. Daniel wouldn’t explain why, but I’m already seeing reports of a possible terrorist attack in Orion’s west side.

That’s bad news for us, and bad news for those working so hard toward peace, but I’m so thankful that the princess was able to stop by today. And thanks to all of you for joining me!

hehehehe wasn’t that just awesome 🙂 I really like her, and I do hope after everything that has happened, things can get better… BUT I’M STILL NOT DONE!!! I would now like to introduce Mr. Thomas Winship himself, as a guest post…

The Name Game

Hello everyone. I’m so excited to be today’s guest blogger at Happy Tails and Tales! I’m Thomas Winship, author of Væmpires: Revolution and Væmpires: White Christmas. Both books are part of a new, ongoing vampire series that explores the question: what if vampires evolved?

I hate naming characters.

Yikes! That’s probably not the best way to begin a guest blog. Forget about turning you readers off, the use of the “h” word probably shot me right to the top of a special interest group’s watch list—you know, one of those groups that protects unnamed fictional characters.

Is it me, or does there seem to be a special interest group for everything? I mean, even sticking with just the topic of unnamed people, even I know of—and I’m quite a neophyte, I guarantee—special interest groups representing: 1) the random, unnamed cowboy who ambles across the street just before the shootout (and just after the tumbleweed) in those old western films; 2) the drunken, unnamed frat boys who criss-cross the country stirring up riots whenever a college championship is decided, and 3) people who anonymously post on websites and blogs.

I mean, I’m all for protecting the defenseless, but c’mon …

Still, I’d better get back on track before the protestors shut me down.

So yes, gentle readers, the truth is that I hate naming characters. In fact, it isn’t just characters that I hate naming, it’s pretty much everything: countries, cities, streets, weapons, technology, you name it (no pun intended) … but I especially hate naming characters.

Names are labels. Labels suck. I’m not trying to take a stance or make some kind of social statement. I’m not even afflicted by a crippling fear of commitment. I’m just horrible at coming up with names.

Character names, that is.

I couldn’t care less about names for actual people.

I can name people all day without breaking a sweat. If you’re about to have a baby and you’re undecided about a name, drop me a line; I’ll come up with a name on the spot.

Because who really cares about his/her name? If it’s that bad, you can change it. The easy way to do so, of course, is to adopt a cool nickname, but you can do so legally if you want.

Artists do it all the time. So do people running from the law.

Those two groups have more in common than either want to admit …

Nevertheless, I believe deciding upon a character’s name might be the most difficult part of writing. So much can rely upon a name: the right one can offer insight into a character’s character (no pun intended), while helping plant an accurate visual in the mind’s eye.

On the other hand, a bad name can become an insurmountable obstacle—and will be quite difficult to change later. While I’m certain there are authors out there who can turn a character’s desire for a name change into a scintillating sub-plot, I assure you that I am not one of them.

Still, it might be an interesting project for NaNoWriMo in November …

Anyhow, knowing how important a name is creates a lot of pressure. And it’s not just the first name, mind you—last names have to be selected, as well.

Some names require hours of research and a painful decision. Now, don’t get me wrong. Not every name involves a difficult choice. Some names pop into existence as soon as a character is envisioned and it just feels right. Luckily, this happens almost half the time—otherwise, I’d probably never finish a story.

On that note, let me share the history behind some of the names selected for Væmpires: Revolution:

Vielyn—(first appearance Væmpires: Revolution)—everyone’s favorite new villain has a name that seems somewhat exotic and unique… yet, it is anything but. Although it is pronounced vee-ellen, it’s actually just a slight modification of the word villain. Vielyn is a bad guy, pure and simple. He’s evil, he’s black-hearted, and he’s going to get much worse as the series progresses…

Still, even the most despicable despot deserves love (in fiction, at least), so you can expect Vielyn to find his perfect soul(less) mate in an upcoming novel.

Her name is Vendelia. As my mother would say, “She’s a doozy.”

Iris—(first appearance Væmpires: Revolution)—I spent weeks agonizing over this name. During that time, Iris was identified within the novel as ***. I struggled. What name could best reflect a character with the fashion sense of a punk rocker but the power to resurrect the dead?

After much contemplation, I settled on Iris, shortened from Osiris, the Egyptian god associated with death and life after death. Moreover, Osiris is usually depicted in bright, flamboyant colors—much like dear Iris.

Steven & Elle—(first appearance Væmpires: White Christmas)—I selected the names of Daniel’s parents as an homage to Stephen King’s Dark Tower series. In the Dark Tower, Roland Deschain’s parents were named Steven and Gabrielle. And while the Dark Tower is set in a future rendered archaic by the devolution of technology, Væmpires is set in a future that’s technologically evolved, yet also feels archaic. It’s all very fitting and just feels right.

Councilman Donrel—(first appearance Væmpires: White Christmas)—Donrel is an interesting character. In some ways, he’s the firebrand of White Christmas, and although we have yet to find out what he’s up to during the revolution, his heart seems to be in the right place (which is advantageous, since he’s a warm-blooded væmpire!) and he also serves as a voice of reason—even when his view is unpopular. Because of this, I chose to name him after Tolkien’s Elrond—another person who headed a council and was willing to give voice to the unpopular truth. Donrel is an anagram of Elrond.

Queen Anne—(first appearance Væmpires: White Christmas)—The name of Cassandra’s mother is the key to a very important reveal that’ll come much, much later in the series. I think it’s so clever (and that, ladies and gentlemen is to key to happiness: believe what you want about yourself, and don’t let anyone or anything else—even conclusive facts to the contrary—convince you otherwise) that I’m willing to offer this to the first person that figures it out:

  • An autographed first edition of every Væmpires book ever printed
  • A reading (at your home or local library) every time a new Væmpires book is printed
  • I’ll personally select the names for all your future children!*

*These must be real, not fictional, children.

And, with that, I bid you adieu. Or farewell. Or whatever label you want to stick on it.

I’d like to thank all of you for stopping in and offer a very special “thank you” to Maghon for hosting my Dark Mind Book Tour and for inviting me to Happy Tails and Tales.
