Description

Mac Thorne’s time as a Changeling is coming to an end.

It may have taken eighteen years, but Mac did finally manage to do what the Council wanted: she chose a teacher and renounced the in-between.

There’s just one last step. She must say goodbye to her human. Forever.

After being challenged in every way possible, Mac leaves what she thought would be the easiest task for the last possible moment. As midnight on July fourth draws near, though, she hasn’t found a way to give up Winn Thomas.

Nor does she want to.

With time running out, Mac stands at a literal crossroads.

Choose Winn, and she’ll be stripped of the only family she’s ever known—vampires, dragons, and her favorite demon. Even her own mother. Accept her position on the Council and rule as an equal to her twelve peers, and she’ll forget Winn ever existed.

Independence and freedom have never before been so limiting.

In this final chapter of the 19th Year Trilogy, it’s time for Mac to decide.

Responsibility? Or Love?

 Excerpt Chapter 1

Mac

“If you touch him, I will kill you.” I meant it, too, and forced myself not to crumble the orange juice cup I’d been sent out to get.

Ridge, standing in front of Winn’s hospital bed, raised his hands. “Whoa, what gives, Mackenzie?”

I stepped farther into Winn’s private room, the door closing behind me. “Get away from Winn.”

Ridge backed up toward the far wall, across from where Winn had lay for the previous twelve hours. “Seriously, girl, what’s going on?”

“Why don’t you tell me?”

He shook his short blond hair, hands still in the air, blue eyes boring into mine. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” His gaze shifted to Winn, but I didn’t follow.

I kept my eyes focused on Ridge, expecting that, if I even glanced at Winn, Ridge would attack or poof his way to obliv- ion. No one had given me any answers on what magic he could do since the last unexpected event at our party months before. Not to mention, I didn’t understand why Ridge would want or need to visit Winn. “What are you doing here?”

“Visiting a friend.” He pointed toward where Winn slept. “I don’t believe you. Spill it, baseball boy, or I’ll make you.” Ridge huffed a laugh. “Like you could.” One hand started down.

“Get it back up, or I call security, and I don’t mean the police.”

Ridge cocked his head in my direction. “Who else would you call?”

For a moment, I wondered if he didn’t understand, or if he’d started a game of chicken and egg and just waited for one of us to spill our magical secrets to the other.

“C’mon, Mackenzie. I came to see how Winn was. I heard he was in a car accident and today was the first day we could visit.”

“At six a.m.?” I snorted. “Right, and I’m a monkey’s uncle.”

“Wouldn’t . . .” The sound came from Winn, still in bed and barely awake, but I forced myself to keep my eyes trained in Ridge’s direction. “. . . that be . . .”

The desire to turn, to check on Winn had me clenching my hands and tightening my muscles.

“. . . a monkey’s aunt?”

He would try to make a joke.

I let my gaze travel to him and found his big brown eyes blinking at me. Even just ten minutes before, he’d barely been able to open them.

Winn. I love—

His eyes darted to the left.

I spun back to Ridge, and as his lips moved in a near-silent cadence, the room burst into light and wind that couldn’t exist blew through my hair.

“Spirit guides, I ask you, lend me focus and clarity.” Ridge’s voice held a mystical quality—almost feminine.

No! That’s the spell to go to the in-between. “Mayday, Suze!”

If he finishes, and sends Winn in, Winn’ll die.

My Review:

I love trilogies but I hate them! I love that there more than one book filled with people and worlds I love. And I hate when they end. This series is definitely one of my major favorites!! I yelled and smiled and cheered and cried a lot and yelled and then cried and then smiled a whole lot! I’ve never had a series ending quite so perfect! This is absolutely the best book ever! I mean how could anyone not love it? It’s so well done. I’m sad to see them go :/ but boy was this one so damn satisfying! So does Mac finally chose, yes. Did she get her HEA and everything she wants- maybe. She’s lost some but gained some too 🙂

I knew Mac would be different. She’s such a unique character and her choice blew my mind. This book also made me cry beyond most. Some sacrifices were made and it blew my mind. Mac is such a strong girl, but she’s smarter than anyone ever have her credit for. She figured out what no one else could. She made me so freaking anxious while she did it. This is hard one. She still has her stupid impulsive moments but she is still awesome.

I’m so damn proud of Winn. He also figures some things out. It amazes me what he’s had to go through. Does he get his happily ever after? Well you’ll have to find out. He’s also had to make some sacrifices. He lost a lot but he too has gained a lot as well.

I knew going in that this would be emotional, I just wasn’t prepared for how emotional. I knew a lot was to come, I should have expected it. The writing is phenomenal. The secondary characters have become just as important as the main characters. You know how they say you should wait to get what’s yours? Well the wait was so vet much worth it. This is a story about a beautiful girl who grows into a magnificent woman and has made some great friends along the way. And is was a magnificent ride! I don’t think I could’ve asked for more. And I don’t know if this will ever amount to 5 PAWS because it deserves so very much more, but what a PHENOMENAL, MAGNIFICENT, HEARTBREAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL 5 PAWS!

My Guest Interview:

WELCOME SUZE!! First, tell me a little bit about yourself and your life…

“Um … I’m a demon. And … my life is normal.” Hands in his lap, he sits still as if that’s the proper answer to the proper question.

What’s your favorite form of human to take?

“I’m not human. I’m a demon.” He shakes his head, which looks eerily human.

You always surprise me with what you were or what character you’re chosing. 🙂

“I only dress to the necessary situation.” He runs his hands down his sides as if showcasing the tuxedo he’s wearing. Complete with top hat and cane.

So this is appropriate for today?
He nods. “Yes. Mac said I should dress up.”

How do you feel about Mac being so special?

“How do you mean? Mac is Mac. There’s nothing special about her other than being the Changeling.” He taps his forehead. “Oh, you mean that. Yeah, Mac’s the Changeling.”

What do you think is going to happen on Mac’s Birthday when everything’s going to change?

“Oh, it’s going to change alright. That’s how a Changeling’s life works. See,” He leans in close. “She’s got to pick a final form. When her birthday hits, that’ll be it. No more presto-changeo-shapeo.”

Do You think Mac is really destined to change everything?

“Mac’s not destined to change anything. She’s just the next in line. Do you think she’s destined to change everything?” He cups his hand around his ear as if waiting for an answer.

Tell me how you feel about Winn and Zoe? And maybe how you think they effect Mac.

“Winn’s human. Zoe is half-human. Like Mac. They are the best two people to ever happen to Mac.” He gives an emphatic nod.

How’d you get that totally cool hummer? And did you pick the color? 🙂

“It’s the biggest car I could find that Mac would let me buy and yellow was the last one on the lot.”

Tell me a little something about your job, other than protecting Mac.

“My job?” He scratches at his chin. “I just make sure the gate to the country club opens and closes. It’s not very hard. So I get to spend a lot of time reading.”

Ok, so what’s your favorite human food?

“Humans aren’t food. Mac made me promise not to eat humans.”

Okay… what about non-human food, do you eat anything weird?

“I eat everything. What do you think is weird? I might eat that.”

Are you cool with being a demon or would you want to be something else?

“Only Mac can be something else. I am what I am and that’s all that I am.”

Tell me a little about that hawt girlfriend of yours!

“Gwen?” He grins. “She’s kinda cute, isn’t she? She’s a little out of my league though. At least that’s what Nomas says. Not a hundred percent sure why he says that.”

Hmmm, is there anything you’d like to tell me, maybe a little secret, or any cool hints about the upcoming future? 😉

“I have a story.”

What story?

“I can’t tell you yet.” He holds up a finger to his lips. “Mac made me promise not to tell until February tenth. Can you wait until then?”

What about your coolest power, can you tell me something about which of your powers you like the most?

“I can walk through fire in my natural form. All these human likenesses are pretty skimpy on the powers but that’s my favorite. Doesn’t even burn.”

Thanks so much for hanging out with us, Suze!

“You’re welcome!” he says with a giant smile. “Can I come back some time? I like the cookies you made.” He slides the last one from the plate of two dozen that sat there at the start of our interview.

I’m a huge fan and I can’t believe this awesome adventure is almost over!

“Wait, what? The adventure is almost over?” His lip puffs out. “That’s so sad!”

I really am going to miss you!

“I’m going to miss you, too, human!” His large arms reach out and before anyone can move, they’ve wrapped around in a fierce hug.

Crushed again Suze, I say, I hope you get to come back and see me! Please tell Winn and Mac I say “hey!” 🙂

About the Author:

Emi Gayle

I had a really great bio in my head around midnight one night …. right before I fell asleep and it disappeared into the nothingness of unconsciousness. Bummer. So here’s something less well thought out.

I want to be young again, so I’m kinda sorta living it again. At least on paper. You see, I write paranormal romance. Now, that stuff can get really hot, and really gritty and well … mine does. But! My characters are teenagers, 18 and under. Like I was once … and want to be again.

Why would I want to be a teenager again? Geez. Because! If you met the man of your dreams at 14 was engaged to him at 19 and married him at 20, wouldn’t YOU want to do all that over again? Especially if you were still in love with him? I mean, c’mon! It’s love! That’s why I write, too.

You see… just because you pass a certain age doesn’t mean you forget what it was like to be 14, 15, etc. Actually, because I kinda grew up with my husband, we both still feel like the 14 and 17 year old kids we once were. So that’s where I’m coming from. You might think it’s totally lame, but you know what? That’s ok! Maybe you’ll like my other me instead. ;)
